Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. This figure shares certain stylistic traits with sculptures from other Akan peoples such as the Asante and the Bono. Her elaborate hairstyle has multiple fine braids aranged in a cap shape. The rings around the neck are shared by the Anyi and many other Akan peoples. The stance of the figure is typical of the Fante. Their neighbors have influenced Fante styles. The frontal stance. Narrow T-shaped nose and a very small chiseled mouth almost indistinguishable at the end of the chin and her hair style broken into a number of ridges all mark Baule influences however her stance and slightly elongated and ringed neck indicate Fante traits. The surface tells of extended use serving Fante ritual traditions. Such figures are a representation of ancestor or queen mother. Recommended Reading: Mato. The wood carver is from a village called Kaminbit in the upper reaches of the Sepik river. The villagers have been creating tribal art the same way they have done for centuries. Most of their art is related to the spirits that are large part of their religion. The carving has two pieces. One is the tribesman figure and the other a headress. It is made from native wood. I believe this to be a vintage Indian Art Eskimo doll. Super cute with red. Orange, and yellow flower detail on the cuffs and bottom trim on coat. Doll and stand measures approx 9 3/4" tall and 4" wide. A chunk of the real fur on the top part of the hood is missing. The coat is a little dirty/ dusty and right hand is a tiny bit scuffed. This wonderful Betty Boop jointed Toy Doll measures approx. 12" tall and features a painted wood and painted composition surface. This is an outstanding representation of the Icon American Cartoon Character showing Betty Boop at her"sexiest" a real"hot number" even if she did have a big head for a girl! The Character Betty Boop was from Max Fleischer 1930. Film Cartoons titled"Dizzy Dishes" Betty was created by Myron Grim Natwick and the doll offered here was designed by Joseph Kallus for the Cameo Doll Company of Port Alleghany, Pennsylvania. This Doll was manufactured with Betty wearing three different color dresses- black, red and green. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. this is an authentic very rare. Exquisite, hand crafted antique wooden carving from China during the Qing Dynasty. it has exquisite very detailed craftsmanship and intense carving. It has beautiful patina. And still has good color, has some beautiful age to it. the piece is still in good shape. No pieces are broken off, just some paint but normal ware for age. this is a very rare find it measures 12 inches tall by 6 inches wide.
