And have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Crack damages in several places. Large old chip in head, scrapes on forehead, on nose, and on mouth of mother and child. Additional Information: Dogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well used figure with the âchildâ in the back projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the seated mother holding a child are commonly called âmaternityâ figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure in the back is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the âmotherâ representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. VINTAGE Santa Garfield Sleigh w/Odie Reindeer Wood Figure Dakin Pooky Christmas
Here's a very cute Garfield and Odie wooden figurine. Garfield is dressed as Santa and is sitting in a sleigh. While Odie is wearing Reindeer antlers and is hooked up to the front of the sleigh. Pooky is riding in the sleigh behind Garfield, sticking up out of a bag of gifts. The sleigh measures 4 inches long. And from Odie's nose to the back of the sleigh it is 7 and 1/2 inches. The sticker on the bottom of the sleigh indicates that it was made by Dakin, and there is a date of 1978 on the sticker. As far as condition goes. I would say it's in good pre-owned condition. Next I notice the figure is sitting side saddle on the horse. I am not sure if it is male or female. The artist used a limited palette to paint the rider and horse. The horse is brown with carving and the rider's shirt is of the red color family with a vermillion hue. The stylized modeling of the rider and horse is what I really enjoy, almost bordering on abstract. It was crafted in the Maori tradition using native Matai wood. And the artist's initials are carved into the bottom corner on the back side. Its eyes are inlaid with Paua shell discs. Its original labels are still attached to the back side. It measures 7.25" high. 2.75" at the widest point, and 1.5" thick at the base. It weighs 1/2 of a pound. There are some scuffed and scratched areas in the wood and the stained finish. An indention on one side, and a few nicks on the top. Up for bid is an African Folk Art female figure carved from one piece of wood. The figure is elongated and holding a vessel on her head. The wood is stained to appear as ebony however it is of a light weight red-toned wood. The base is signed and marked"1966 Nov. There is also something written in pencil which I am unable to decipher. The neck has a crack where it meets the head however is very tightly in place and not off kilter. There is corner chip off the base. The lower arm may have been repaired as there is a line however all is tight and does not seem fragile. Bete statues were usually carved as standing figures displaying set-apart legs, an elongated torso with square shoulders, an elongated columnar neck supporting an oblong head with a pointed chin, an incised mouth and a high-domed, smooth forehead under a helmet-like coiffure. Bete figures exhibit hand positions, which are difficult to interpret, as well as touches of white pigment. Male and female figures are displayed in shelters or shrines to represent the founders of the community. They incarnate the conceptual ideal of spiritual perfection and moral strength and its connection to physical beauty. The Côte d'Ivoire is the home to the Bete- they live in the southwestern part of the country. Between the Akan ethnic groups to the east and the Guro tribe to the north.
