It is a hand-made and hand-painted baul/ chest from Olinala in the ... morestate of Guerrero. The indigenous artists here are Nahua. This very old piece is intricately painted on all but the back side of the chest with elegant, stylized birds, raised florals and deer and village/sun scene. The sides have another village scene with raised butterflies(mariposas) The separate wood base is hand-painted also. Deep, rich colors and aged lacquer on this piece. The person I obtained it from estimated it to be from the 1940's. A fabulous piece for your Mexican folk art collection or any Museum collection. It is in very good condition. It has no chips or cracks or dings and only minor ware to the painted artwork. The inside is very clean. It is large at 17" long by 12" tall and 10" deep overall. The chest part when removed from its base measures 16" x 9" x 8" Lacquerware folk art comes from the states of Michoacan. Guerrero and Chiapas. In Guerrero, two towns have preserved their lacquerware traditions- Olinala and Temalacatzingo. Olinala is famous for its production of fine chests(bauls) gourds and furniture, which are delicately and intricately painted. The bauls were often made of linaloe wood, grown in tropical Guerrero. Coffers and chests(bauls) were often intended as dowry chests used to store linens and valuables. They are richly painted and colored brightly. With intricate decoration of idealized city scenes combining cathedrals and colonial buildings against a backdrop of mountains. Which reflected nearby cities such as Puebla, Taxco and Cholula with their magnificent central squares, imposing buildings and impressive basilicas. Primitive Antique Blanket Chest Folk Art Wood Miniature Mini Trunk Fruit Crate
Awesome primitive folk art miniature wooden blanket chest. Made from an old fruit crate. All components of box show traces of having been gleaned from a fruit crate the box is in excellent shape, and measures 8" long by 3 3/4" wide and 3 1/4" tall. There are three tiny nail holes visible on top of box lid one in front center, and two on right side edge, which are remnants of when piece was a packing crate please see last photo. The front of box has a beautiful scallop design and still retains faint pencil layout lines. Original to the creation of the piece. Both sides of the mini blanket chest have footed arched features which join and compliment the scalloped arched front. The interior of box is where the origin of this unique piece is hidden, the wooden interior reveals the writing, advertising of the original fruit crate ... moreof which it was made. The bottom of lid is partially labeled"produce of USA united packing company" circled(27) The interior sides read"deluxe quality" and"pack" The top of lid is a beautiful bow type top it's thick and smooth from years of use. When the top is opened in blays music. The music box has a key on the right side that turns to wind it. When opened, 2 chains are attached on either side. The top inside of the box has a tray that can be removed to expose the music box& another storage tray. It has a drawer on the bottom that pulls out to place more jewelry. This is a very nice vintage carpenter's tool chest. It measures 33" x 14 1/4" x 8 1/2" It is made of solid wood and has all original hardware. The inside of the chest has a beautiful red tone stain. There is a drawer with multiple compartments that pulls out. There are also 3 compartments in the fold down portion with separators that have leather straps which can secure tools. The inside is stamped"ASSEMBLED BY No. 18" The outside was painted green at some point. Some places where the paint has chipped has revealed the same red stained wood finish beneath the paint. Oak Jewelry Treasure Chest Vintage Carved Wood Secret Compartment Cigar Box 1950
This is what I believe to be a vintage oak jewelry chest or perhaps it is an old cigar box. The inside of the lid has a"hidden" or secret compartmart(see pictures 1. 10, and 11) which could hold a small book or diary or other important items You can access to that compartment by simply moving the 4 carved leaves so that the wooden"cover" or panel which has additional carved leaves on it can be removed. Behind that panel is a lattice-effect storage area which could hold narrow items. Of course, this item could've been an old cigar box and the compartment might've served another purpose, or I am wrong on both counts and it held something else. I also don't know the age of this item but I would guess it is from mid century, perhaps the 1940s or 1950s. Chest has neat metal corner protectors as well as metal closure ... moreclasp and hinges; as you can see. The hinges look like piano hinges inside. This item is in good, vintage condition; check out the pictures. I tried to take shots from every angle. It measures approx. 11 3/4" wide x 9" deep x 4" tall. The opening to the secret compartment is 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" approx. Of course, this box can be used as a jewelry box or used for storage for any number of items.
