I found this letter opener while visiting in Michigan. Nice little example of old English treen. A Paper Folder was a common item for office or household use when letters or other items needed to be folded neatly. Such flat items- here 230 x 34 mm- were ideal for Mauchline decoration. In this case this consists of an applied panel with a floral motif and an image of Ilkley Wells House. Condition in very good without any of the notches to the wood edges caused by excessive use.

Tunbridge Ware Style Cribbage Box and Scorer Victorian Treen
This is something of a mystery box. Factually it measures 250 x 96 x 55 mm. Is clearly designed to hold cards and provide a scorer for cribbage or similar games. And is very nicely made. The decoration has some resemblance to Tunbridge Ware. But is on a quite different scale. The individual woods are both larger and thicker than veneer, and the box is a solid piece of carpentry. This said, it is very well made of hard woods and not an amateur production. The inside is arranged to allow two packs of cards to be contained. Though there is no sign of pegs or where they might have been kept. The hinges and catch are both original. And of some quality, though the'tongue' needed by this type of catch is missing. An item of interest. And a good age. Where made is unknown- but a handsome item of woodwork

One of the many styles of box produced to contain cotton reels. This is a cylindrical box with a pull-off lid. Intended to contain three reels of Clark's cotton. The wooden carcase measures 72 mm diameter(base) By 52 mm high(over domed lid) The exterior is clad with'Basket-weave' paper; inside are three(replacement) pegs for the spools. With the manufacturer's label inside the lid. Like many sewing pieces which were intended for use rather than display the box has minor flaws from use. A pretty little example of one of the many styles of Thimble Box found in Mauchline Ware. In this case the box is rectangular with a domed top. Dimensions are 46 x 34 x 31 mm. The decoration is a coloured floral label. Internally the box is lined with velvet. And contains a metal thimble. Condition is very good, an attractive sewing accessory.

Tunbridge Ware Jewel Box Rare Mosaic Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire Victorian Treen
This Tunbridge Ware box has the very rare image of Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire. Attributed to Henry Hollamby. The box measures 258 x 178 x 109 mm. Externally it is in very good condition. With attractive banding and an excellent image. Alas. As may be seen from the photographs. There is a narrow crack across the sky, caused by splitting of the underlying panel. This split has been secured and the surface split filled. Though as may be seen it is still visible, to differing degrees according to the angle and lighting. Internally the box had been stripped. And has been refurnished. The paper used is a replica of a contemporary paper. And the tray is a replacement. However the lock and the hinges appear original. Very old and well used turned wood jar. Features original dark red painted exterior, vent hole in top of the lid, unknown maker and origin, measures 4-1/4" high x 2-3/4" diameter. The jar is in rough, well used condition. Please note the following, the lid has a tight fit/not easy to put on, there are occasional nicks to the wood and flakes to the paint and there's red staining/residue to the interior. There are No cracks to the lid or base.

Low Harrogate' This example has provision for both needle packets and loose needles. The former in numbered spaces to accept paper folders of needles of the various weight. Instead of the'leaves' usually found there is a panel surfaced with cloth for loose needles. This has a couple of moth holes. Tunbridge Ware Tape Measure Sewing Accessory Victorian Treen
This is a small tape measure in Tunbridge Ware. One of the many items made as sewing accessories. The top is 24 mm in diameter. And the height to the top of the spindle is 35 mm. The tape pulls our and is rewound by turning the spindle at the top. A small stop on the end prevents the tape from disappearing! The wood is in good condition save for one tiny chip on the edge of the top. The tape itself is a replacement. As is its'stop' However a pretty example and eminently usable.

Mauchline Ware 'Collar' Emery Sewing Accessory Victorian Treen
A lovely little example of Mauchline'Tartanware' This is a sewing accessory in the form of an emery for cleaning needles. The wooden tube(or collar) contains carborundum powder sealed at either end with a velvet-covered dome. The needle is pushed through the pad to be cleaned by the powder. The collar is 23 mm in length and 17 mm in diameter. It is covered with a tartanware finish in the'McLean tartan. Tunbridge Ware Sewing Accessory Stickware Waxer/Emery Victorian Treen
One of the host of small sewing accessories made in Tunbridge Ware for use in the sewing box of a Victorian lady. This is a combination of waxer(to wax thread) and emery(to clean needles) The piece stands 36 mm high and the base is 29 mm in diameter. The base is turned from a length of stickware showing the patterning of various woods. And the post carrying the emery screws vertically into the base, passing through the block of beeswax. Condition is very good with little sign of use and none of damage. A pretty example.

Mauchline Ware 'Cap' Waxer Tartanware (McFarlane) Victorian Treen Sewing Item
One of several variants on sewing'waxers' Used to help the thread slide in heavier sewing. The wax block should be beeswax. But is often replaced by a piece of candle. The tartanware'caps' have a lip which is a push fit on the end of the block. Enabling it to be handled in use. The caps are identical, each 20 mm in diameter and 4 mm deep) save that one bears the legend'McFarlane in gold. These caps are in mint condition and the piece has obviously never been subjected to the hurly-burly of a Victorian sewing box. Lovely examples.

Mauchline Ware Fernware Binding 'Cowper's Poetical Works' Victorian Treen
A lovely Mauchline fernware binding of‘Cowper’s Poetical Works’ published by Thomas Nelson and Son(of London. Edinburgh and New York) in 1870. William Cowper is described as‘of the Inner Temple’ and was presumably a lawyer with a good deal of time on his hands. To judge by the 600 pages here. The binding has two fine fernware covers. And an ornate leather spine. All in good condition. There do not seem to be many signs of use. Dimensions of the covers are 171 x 109 mm.

Tunbridge Ware Brush Floral Mosaic and Black and White Bristles Victorian Treen
This is a nice example of a Tunbridge Ware brush. With the back embellished with a floral mosaic which might appear as a banding on a larger item. The narrow shape of the brush- the back measures 164 x 22 mm- means that it would be used with a sideways motion- probably to sweep crumbs from a table. Or powder from a lady's dress. The use of bristles of two colours appears simply decorative. This example is in very good condition and has little or no signs of wear.

An unusual small jewel box in Tunbridgeware. Unlike most Tunbridge pieces centre of the lid is plain. But surrounded by a novel stickware pattern. Which comprises the same block of pattern made in many different colour ways. This gives an impression of rather random decoration which I have not seen before. Inside there is a small tray with a padded top, which sits above a base with similar padding. Which is also repeated inside the lid. The box measures 142 x 71 x 48 mm. And was obviously intended to hold small items of jewellery such as rings and brooches. Condition is very good overall. In particular the silk lining of the pads is original and unscathed with no signs of piercing or ware. Something a little different y

Mauchline Ware Ribbon or Tape Box 3 x Edinburgh Images Victorian Treen
A Mauchline Ware Cylindrical Box with lift-off lid. Intended to hold a spool of ribbon or tape which is dispensed through a vertical slot in the side of the box. There are three images. Edinburgh Castle' on the lid, and'Abbotsford' and'Melrose Abbey' around the body. The standard size for tape was 2 inches wide. And to accommodate this the box measures 60 mm in diameter and 66 mm high. This has been a working box and although in generally good condition there are a few minor blemishes.

Tunbridge Ware Envelope Box Sloping Front & Tapered Shape Victorian Treen
An outstanding Tunbridge Ware piece in the form of an envelope box. The odd shape is dictated by the fact that Victorian gentry used envelopes for their correspondence graduated according to the status of the recipient. The internal partitions allow for five difefrent sizes! Such pieces are relatively rare. Being difficult to make, especially when- as here- the id is not only sloping but curved. The dimensions are width of the back 212 mm; width of the front 116 mm; height of the back 123 mm; and front to back diatance 139 mm. Condition for an elaborate piece like this. Made c 1860 is exceptional/The image on the lid is complete and free of cracks; and the wonderful floral banding around the base is similarly in fine condition. Probably not very useful in the present day. But as an example of Victorian craftsmanship hard to equal. Tunbridge Ware Round Waisted Pill Box.Victorian Treen
An attractive and tactile little circular box obviously intended to be carried in a pocket or bag and probably containing pills or pastilles(breath fresheners) Diameter is 62 mm. And overall depth 24 mm. The two halves of the box push together. And are turned from an unusual wood(possibly yew? In the centre of the lid a circular panel has been inserted with a'Barton Star' motif. Thin lines of a darker shade surround this. And also the perimeter. Beautifully made and in very good condition- plus unusual.

Mauchline Ware Needle Book 'Penmaenmawr'' Victorian Treen Sewing Accessory
A rather superior Mauchline Ware Needlebook. With an image of'Penmaenmawr' The boards are each 92 x 56 mm. And they are hinged together with a velvet'spine' Inside the silk lining has pockets which would have held needles in paper packets. Plus the usual flannel'pages' for loose needles' There is also an additional feature which I have not come across before. And cannot explain. Between the back cover and its silk lining is another layer. The same size, about 3 mm thick and wrapped in the same velvet as the spine. I wondered whether this might be effectively a pinwheel. But the edge resists a pin, and might be cardboard. Whatever its purpose it is clearly original. And doubtless someone will advise me on its use! Condition is what might be described as good. Used. This is a delicate example of the small sewing accessories made in Tunbridge Ware. On the face of it a small pin wheel to hold pins. However there are two unusual features. The first is the size. The wooden boards measuring 32 mm in diameter. Which might restrict the size of pins used! Rather more unusual is the fact that the two faces are not identical. In each case the centre of the rods from which the boards were sliced is octagonal. And normally one would expect the patterns to be identical. However in fact one octagonal section(Photo 1) has a Tunbridge pattern. While the other(Photo 2) does not. Condition is very good and suggests that use has been minimal. An antique sewing cotton reel box with a Clark& Co label. A souvenir of Scotland the top features a view of Abbotsford. The home of Sir Walter Scott. A souvenir with a purpose, organization. Oval in shape the box has six holes for which the thread can exit from the upright wooden pegs. Small eyelets around the box have numbers below. Several numbers are worn but three are visible. 2 60's and a 40. Circa 1900 Measurements; 4 1/2" X 3"X 2" Condition report; wood box sound. Hinges work well, top is scratched from use, paper interior is worn in accordance with age and use. All eyelets are tight.

Unusual Mauchline ware souvenir has a picture of the US Capitol in Washington. DC. The picture has great details. The little egg timer measures 3" tall and the base measures just under 2" across. The base is plain with no marks. All original with early glass hourglass and reddish brown sand that still flows easily. Some varnish loss and a tiny nick to one of the edges of the base that measures a under 1/8" by under 1/16" and is noticeable only on a really close look. And a little dirt(almost like smoke smudges) on the hourglass that can be cleaned off. I have not done anything to this great DC souvenir. A great example of wooden treen ware. Tunbridge Ware Cuff Brush with Black and White Bristles Victorian Treen
This is a nice example of a Tunbridgeware Brush. These were popular items since the shape allowed decoration to take the form of a length of banding. And in this case. The small floral mosaic pattern runs from end to end of the back of the brush. Brushes like this were familiar items in a Victorian household. Used either to sweep crumbs from the table. Or powder from the lady of the house. Just what the significance of the two-tone bristles was is not clear. But just a decorative touch. Nice condition overall.

Mauchline Ware Aide Memoire 'Castle Campbell Victorian Treen
This is a nice example of a a familiar Mauchline item. A small notebook or'aide memoire' to be carried in a pocket. Or more probably in a lady's bag. The covers are 83 x 55 mm, and are hinged together by a velvet'spine' The image to the front is of'Castle Campbell' with the unusual legend that the wood comes from that source rather than'the banks of the Doon' There is a small second image to the back cover which is of'Caldron Linn' Inside each cover has a panel of surfaced card from which pencil marks could be readily removed. In addition a small separate notebook is held by a cord. Condition is generally very good. With the exception that three loops originally holding a small pencil have been frayed by the joint pressures of the(mising) pencil. And their projection beyond the covers. Tunbridge Ware Six Inch Ruler with Stickware Decoration Victorian Treen
This is a nice example of a small Tunbridge Ware ruler. This is six inches long and has the inches marked in stickware on the front face(though rather oddly this measure is denoted by lines rather than the whole pattern of the surface) Such rulers were intended to be used with dip pens. And to facilitate this the front edge is set at an angles to prevent ink running under the ruler and onto the paper. The measurements are 6 inches( by 20 mm. With a thickness of 5 mm. If used regularly there would have been the danger that ink from the side of the nib would mark the raised edge of the ruler. There is no sign of this here. Or indeed on most examples I have seen, suggesting that these were decorative rather than practical items. The ruler is in lovely condition.

This is a small Tunbridgeware Pin Cushion. 44 mm in diameter and 35 mm high(to domed top) The Piece is made starting from an octagonal length of wood. Which has had strips of different woods applied to the outer surface. A block of appropriate length is then turned to expose the decorative effect. Mauchline Ware-Table Snuff-Castle of St Andrews+Retail's Name-Treen
A circular Mauchline Ware Box. Unusual in that it features the Retailers Name. The lid has a transfer of the view‘Castle of St. Andrews’ and the Retailers name G L D Mackintosh beneath it. The base also has a transfer image, although this has been damaged and looks as if it maybe stood on a damp surface. See photos. The View is still largely intact and the caption reads‘Ruins of Cathedral& St. Regulus Tower& Chapel. St. Andrews. Some letters of‘Regulus’ and‘St. Andrews’ missing. There is varnish damaged around the sides with use. See photos. An interesting piece nonetheless. Size: 7.1cms diam X 2cms deep. Needless to say I will always combine shipping whenever possible. Mauchline Ware 'Castle' Money Box 'Douglas Bay, IoM' Victorian Treen
One of the many forms of money box produced in Mauchline to encourage thrift! This example comes in the form of a'castle' tower with battlements. Coins may be inserted through the lid. And recovered by sliding the lid sideways. The image is of'Douglas Bay. From Port Skillion Banks, IoM' This has undoubtedly been a working box, indeed the lid slides almost too easily. But is by no means the commonest form of money box. A handsome well-use item.

Tunbridge Ware Pencil Box Stickware Decoration Victorian Treen
An unusual Tunbridgeware item. Clearly intended as a pencil box. It measures 192 x 43 x 32 mm, with a lid-off lid. The decoration to the top is a run of seven stickware elements. And the margins and sides are rosewood. Internally the box is lined with flesh-coloured paper. Also used on the base. The item is in lovely condition, which is perhaps explained by the fact that there are no marks of pencil. Or anything else, to the lining paper. It seems likely that this was a piece kept for show rather than use. Hard to find a better example.

Mauchline Ware Tape Box Victorian Treen Sewing Accessory
An item of Mauchline Ware but not decorated in the usual manner. Presumably because it was made for a manufacturer. They were Cook and Son. Identified by the label located, unusually, on the base. They made'rolled tape' Most often to a standard 2" width, on a roll which fitted inside this box, and could be dispensed via a vertical slot in the side. The box is 58 mm high. And 52 mm in diameter. Decoration is a mixture of rather random gilt patterns. One or two small chips. But generally in good condition.
