A very fine antique Japanese lacquer& shibayama tea caddy. The top set with hand carved oxbone and mother-of-pearl figures under a maple tree, with leaves falling in the background. It is signed with a small bone medallion cartouche in the lower right. Transparent lacquered interior with goldstone; shiny black lacquered bottom. There is a bronze or brass escutcheon. The tea caddy shows wear commensurate with age and use. There is chipping and dings to the lacquer on the rims of the lid, rim of the box and base rim. There is a 1-11/16" crack on the side of the tea caddy. The locking mechanism inside the caddy is missing, and there is no key with this box. This is a rare, very fine example worthy of the minor conservation it would require to bring it back to excellent condition. Please review the images. Up for auction we an 1820's Chinese Export Porcelain Tea Caddy. It is beautifully decorated with a floral design and gold gilt. This in a nice early example in fair condition.
