Welcome! In the 1950s using beautiful wood in Native American jewelry became popular and wood that looks like rosewood. Ironwood, was used by some of he most famous Native American artists, such as Charles Loloma. This is not Native American, however, and it has a unique history. The artist was a mechanical engineer, living in Phoenix, who developed his own techniques for working with ironwood and he created an original drawing for this inlay of this piece, from silver ingot into ironwood. He confirms that he made this bolo in the 1970s. He left his career as a mechanical engineer in order to devote his life to this work and the work has been in galleries throughout the world: in France as well as throughout the US and still is sold in the best galleries in the US and France. It's a beautiful piece, very simple and elegant. The clasp is a Bennett that was used from 1967-1983 but I have confirmed with the artist that this piece was made in the 1970s. The leather is still entirely useful though it shows some wear. It comes with the original sterling silver tips, which the previous owner shined. The back of the bolo shows some shallow hairlines in the wood. These are natural to the wood and will not worsen. Larry Favorite says he sometimes uses them for his inlay work, but in this case he cut the form of the quail and inlaid the sterling silver into that, as is done with mosaic inlay. This was done absolutely perfectly, with no gaps showing at all. I'd use some leather and wood conditioner on the bolo and tie but they are in excellent vintage condition. Welcome! This exceptionally beautiful knifewing pin or brooch is spectacular. It's large and detailed and very striking. The attribution is to Teddy Weahkee who was one of the all time great Zuni master silversmiths from the C. G. Wallace era. He is represented many times in the CG Wallace Sotheby's auction catalog. There are certain distinguishing features of this pin which are also very similar to those of Leo Poblano and Dan Simplicio but not quite the same. The quality is good enough that any one of the three could have made it. If you've bought from me before. You know that I don't exaggerate quality. This one is tops. This pin is quite large at 2-1/4" high and 2-1/4" wide. It's in great vintage condition. With minimal wear to the stones. It's been treasured over the years. All stones are hand cut and ... morebuffed and inlaid in mosaic inlay to perfection. The dot inlay is so perfectly executed, a tribute the the skill of the artist, but part of the perfection is the use of the single dot for emphasis. I've seen some with less wonderful silver work, smaller, riddled with dots as if the piece had the measles, and in my opinion not the perfection that this one achieves. The spondylus shell is a lovely soft color and contrasts well with the natural turquoise stones, jet and mother of pearl. I believe the turquoise may be Sleeping Beauty and old Cerrillos mine, and very rare quality, no longer available. This is a collector's item. Very beautiful and of top quality. It's one of my favorite pins. The simplicity and elegance of the design is perfectly integrated with the unusual silver work, so the piece as a whole is masterful. It is the single dot that adds to the perfection, so it's not fussy and overdone but exemplifies simple elegance. It is a joy to wear and to own. This strand has 33 barrel shaped beads measuring 12mm each. Two disc beads and one priest bead measuring 36mm. These are all made of mother of pearl. The tassel is a group of hand twisted threads that end in glass seed beads. The strand of prayer beads comes in a marvelous hand made box. This box measures 6 1/2" X 4" X 1 1/4" The box is made of wood and bone and the outsides have an intricate pattern of tiny. Hand painted, bits of wood inlay in a geometric pattern. The insides of the box have been minutely hand painted in an imitation of the inlaid outer parts.
