But I believe this is a healthy piece of millinery history with a handsome patina. As with any old wood piece, there are scratches, scuffs and other blemishes that come with a long journey. My favorite nuances are the faded lettering on the inside sections of the pieces when the mold is separated. The only condition issue that I would like to point out is that somewhere along the line. Someone replaced the screwed supports that hold the five sections together. See photos. The photos may not perfectly capture the nuances of this fine piece. Measures 4-3/4" high and I measure 23-1/4" circumference at the base and 23" at the center. It is a heavy hardwood. Weighing just over 3 pounds.This one has been used over and over in a millinery shop in Connecticut that has been closed for many years and does show some signs of that use. There are a few hairline cracks, but it is still in very solid condition. The shop dated back to the mid 1950s, so this item may be older. please see photos. This is a nice old piece. Wood millinery hat block pagoda / tiered brim & square crown
This unusual brim has four tiers and is reminiscent of a pagoda. It is paired it with a basic square crown. The brim has a circumference of 46" But it is not really a true circle. It has a squared off look when viewed from above. Each of the four levels extends out approximately one inch, so that the brim is about 5" wide near the front and 3 1/2" in the back. The overall height of the brim including the base is 5" The word American is incised on the top and the number 22. These refer to the manufacturer and the head size. There are several cracks running from the front to the back. They don't effect the integrity of the block but may show on a fine straw body. There are also several tack holes from repeated blocking. The major flaw with this brim is the 1 1/2" long piece that is missing in the back along the ... moretop edge. It can still be roped but the body will not be crisp in that area. The crown has a matching gap in the back as can be seen in detail on the last photo. The crown is 4" tall and has a 22" head size. It too has some cracks but like the brim the missing piece in the back is the larger problem. The crown was well used and the pegs holes are worn allowing the the back edge to thin and break. So using these two blocks will require some additional steaming and shaping or else some wood putty repairs. Both pieces have been recently lacquered and I am including two pegs.

Primitive Antique Vintage Millinery Wood Hat Block Mold Form Making M.A. Cuming No. 306 Being offered up for auction is an Awesome Antique Vintage Millinery Wood Hat Block Mold Form. I purchased many hat blocks and accessories from an Estate. They had a hat shop many many years ago. I do not know the exact age of the blocks. But I believe many were from the 40's and older, from the information that came with this collection. The hat block is marked M.A. Cuming& Co. N.Y. It also has the No. 306 on the side, I believe this is the pattern number. The hatblock measures approximately 7" x 6-1/4" and 1-1/4" high. The circumference is approximately 21-1/2" around. There are various holes that were used to turn the mold freely when creating the hat. It is in vintage condition with scratches. Age cracks, pin holes, wood ... morechips and some dings that you would find with any well used hat block. The hat block will need cleaning. This is a great primitive. This lot consists of an old wooden hat block. Also known as a balsa utility crown. Wood burned into the side is“Lucas 22” and in pencil“Front. Lucas 22” is also written in pencil on the bottom. The bottom has a hole drilled into it, known as a“jack hole” so the block can be mounted on a spinner to allow it to be worked on from all sides. Carved from balsa wood to imitate the shape of a human head, used to create draped hat forms. This block or form was made to the shape of Mr. Lucas’ head, so hats could be stretched or shrunk to fit him. Measures approx 8” tall x 7” wide x 5 ½” across. Vintage Wood Millinery Hat Block Overall very good vintage condition but does visible paint specs/scratches throughout on the wood from age and storage. We are listing the item based on our limited knowledge of Millinery Hat Blocks. We could not find a maker stamp on the piece. The millinery block measures approximately 7 1/2" X 7 1/4" across the base and 3 1/4" high. The block opens in the middle as pictured. If you have any further questions. Antique ~ Wooden Tall TOP HAT BLOCK Crown FORM Mold ~ 22" Here's a nice antique tall TOP hat Crown mold or form. Made of a lightweight wood, possibly balsa, measuring 22" around, and 6 1/2" side to side across the top, x 7 1/4" front to back across the top. The hat form measures about 7 1/2" high. From the recent local estate of a lifelong hat maker. I have a few other hat forms available this week, and will gladly combine shipping for multiple auction purchases. This hat mold comes to you in excellent. Clean condition with some pin marks, small dents and nicks, but no signs of heavy use or damage. The original owner's name and address are slightly visible on the base, as well as the stamp from an old Detroit Millinery Supply house. I have tried to show every aspect of condition in the photographs, so please ... morelook them over and ask questions if you need to. As always. I try to describe items as best I can. I recently acquired a private and personal COLLECTION of COPPER ANTIQUE LETTERPRESS PRINT BLOCKS that I will be listing over the next few weeks. I have done some research on them and found that they are all related to an Ad campaign by INDIAN GASOLINE& OIL. TEXACO or HAVOLINE OIL. These Letterpress Blocks are done by highly skilled artisans/ Engravers and each represents a different scene and story line for the Ad. All were produced by"Syndicate Advertising Co. of New York who were the chief Ad Agency for Indian Gasoline& Oil in those days. Indian Gas& Oil's office at that time was also in Manhattan just a few blocks away. The Blocks were shipped in a small. Addressed envelope and accompanied by a 3 Cent Stamp for Postage. The Individual who all the Blocks were sent to was named HENRY S. BIR of LA GRANGE. INDIANA. I have ... morelearned in my research that Mr. Bir was a prominent business man back in the day. He owned a number of businesses including his"BIR GAS& SERVICE STATION" as well as the"BIR GARAGE HOTEL" In addition. Mr. Bir was head of the INDIANA BUSINESS EXCHANGE(a Civic Club for Businessmen) and was even active in the organization on a National Level. There are about 50 different Blocks in the collection. Each has a different scene and would have delivered a different Ad message. Originally. When mailed, the Block was accompanied by a small Paper/ Ad slick which shows a print copy of the Letterpress in the mailer and an accompanying storyline and Ad featuring the Letterpress. All the Ads are colorful but some are particularly fascinating and quite politically incorrect in todays terms. The body of hat stretcher is constructed from some dense dark wood(possibly walnut) The metal handle and the spindle appear to be crafted from cast iron. Hat Block from old store at least fifty years old actually used for years
This hat block came out of a store that has been closed for over forty years and when it was demolished was one of the remaining things in the establishment. Progress came and the store departed but before the place closed it was a retail clothing store for over fifty years which is why I'm safe saying this hate block is at least fifty years old. I think it's older but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure it's made from oak but I'm not a wood expert. It has obvious signs of use but is in incredibly good shape for it's age. A very neat item. Incredible Industrial Hat form. Wood puzzle block from the late 1900s. Some hats were smaller on the band area than at the top. So after a wool or felt hat had dried overnight the pieces could separate to release the hat. This has an incredible look. Great for industrial decor. Vintage Wood Wooden Hat Block Brim MOLDS Millinery Here is a pair of nice old wood hat molds or millinery forms. Which I believe were used to form the brim. These have no markings. They are both made of hardwood. The larger piece measures 10-1/4" O.D. 6" I.D. and is 2-1/8" high. I measure about a 33-1/4" circumference. The smaller piece measures 9-1/8" O.D. 4-1/4" I.D. and is 2" high. I measure about a 29" circumference on this one. These come out of a long closed millinery shop in Connecticut. They are in good condition overall. The small one does have some pin holes. Please see all photos. These are nice old pieces. Fresh from a local estate and it is now selling to you with NO RESERVE!
