How someone could hand carve something like this and not sign it is beyond me. But he is unsigned. though a fantastic piece of folk art sculpture. The wood is pine with a warm patina, and overall he's 12 1/4" high with a 5 1/2" x 5 3/8" base. I should note moreover that he's carved from a single block of wood. no lamination and no separate pieces of any kind. Beyond this I think my pictures convey the true folk are character of this carving. There is no reserve but buyer pays $16 for domestic USPS shipping.

And her base is 5" by 3-1/2" It looks to me that Mary is carved out of one piece of wood(except for applied hands) and then attached to a layered wooden plinth, alsoe carved out of a single piece of wood. Mary's hands are most interesting, as one features all five fingers and the other is a smaller hand in a"mitten" shape. Don't know the significance of this.it seems to be the same wood and same paint. The Navajo People are well-known for their folk art. This is a wonderful piece of folk art created by famous Navajo folk artist Les Herbert. The wooden horse is 13 1/2" long and 8 1/2" tall. The horse's mane and tail are made from black wool. The rider is a Navajo woman dressed traditionally(represented through paint) and wearing a beaded necklace. Her carved face has painted facial features framed with wool hair tied back in the traditional bun of the Navajo. The rider is 11" tall. In her hands are leather reins. Revolutionary Civil War ? whimsey trench Folk art powder horn carving Antique
Very unusual Antique carved horn. I mentioned powder horn in title because it resembles one, but I'm not certain what the function of this horn is, it has an oval hole through the horn that measures 3 1/4" by 1 1/4" The horn is dark with age, has worm holes in several spots, and a couple of the scalloped tips are eaten away. The horn measures approx. 15 1/2" long if measured by string, the mouth of horn is 2 5/8" wide. I do not know what Era to attribute this odd whimsey horn, it does appear to be quite early. There is a brass eyelet on tip of horn, and there are four tiny holes that appear deliberate along side of horn, see photos. Thanks and Happy Bidding!

Fresh from an Estate comes this important folk art carving of"OLE BULL" by a PA carver. I have seen this style of paint and carving from a carver that is well known. But for the life of me I can not rember the name of book that I seen his work in. The bottom is dated 1860 but this was done later then that, 1920-30. His bow is missing but the paint is fine. It measures 5 1/2" tall and has a base that is 3 1/4" x 3 3/4" Ole Bull(1810-1880) a celebrated violinist and seminal figure in Norwegian music. After his early years in his home town of Bergen, Ole Bull's reputation secured him concerts throughout Europe. His technical facility led Schumann to regard him as at least Paganini's equal, and with his enormous personality, Ole Bull dazzled his audiences. Americans were particular smitten by his performance tours, ... morefirst in 1843 and again in the 1850s. A democrat and Romantic adventurer, he became involved in the creation of an utopian New Norway in Potter County, Pennsylvania, in a town to be named Oleana. Amazing wood carving in the form of a jaguar's head. Jaguar with open mouth showing bloody teeth. Hand painted in great detail. I believe this is carved from a lightweight wood. The head measures 8 1/4 inches from front to back. 6 1/2 inches from side to side, and is about 6 1/2 inches tall. Measurements were taken with head sitting flat on surface. The opening in the back doesn't seem large enough for the mask to be worn. I do not know the origin nor the age of the mask. More pictures available upon request. It's in great vintage condition.

18th C American Liberty Carving Folk Art Bust Antique Figurehead att Skillin
Exceptional late 18th century American carving of Lady Liberty wearing a cross and having an exposed breast. The work is carved from mahogany and retains the original rich dark patina. The work is very reminiscent of the Skillin family carvings. The hair and fabric are handled with sensitivity and appear quite fluid. I believe it is rather rare to find Liberty wearing a cross. Visually it works well against the star broach on her shoulder. I do not know the exact use for this piece but it could have been used as part of a stern or archboard decoration. Offered is an outstanding work of mid 19th century American sailor scrimshaw. This is a deep relief portrait executed in whale bone of American sea Captain Avery Fortunee Parker. Around the portrait reads"Captn Avery Parker Zone of Fairhaven. The portrait is housed in the original wood frame with hand forged brass hanger accented with a turned whale bone bead. Up for bids is this Antique American Folk Art Carved& Painted Birds In Nest Wood Carving. This piece was most likely carved in Pennsylvania in the mid 20thC but could be a little earlier. The carving depicts three baby birds and their mother that are sitting on the edge of their nest. The baby birds eyes look to be nails and the mother bird's eyes look like tacks. They are attached to the nest with thick wire legs. The birds are wood and nest are wood but the nest has composition covering it to give it a more realistic look. All of the paint on this piece is original. There are no breaks or repairs to this piece but I do believe that 2 baby birds were either never added or they are missing. Unusual Folk Wood Carving Statue of President Lyndon B. Johnson (L.B.J) Statue
This is a very unusual and fascinating folk caricature of president Lyndon B. Johnson(L.B.J. It's carved out of a block of old wood very dry and crackled. It features L.B.J wearing a suit. With a big smile, his characteristic his big head, big nose and chin, and wrinkled forehead. From the statue it looks as if the president was enjoying a joke or story funny that's so funny and absorbing that he bent down in laughter. One can not help feel funny as well by looking at the face. The carving is very folkish and on the crude side. But nevertheless very vivid and vigorous, and could have been inspired by the Time magazine cover caricature of the president. The statue is painted in pitch black all through.
