Apple Carving Folk Art Sculpture Head Figure Signed by Shep Shapiro Item Description: This unusual original sculpture was carved from an apple. The figure's head. Including an apple top with stem for a hat, is all apple, dried and glazed, preserving the nicely carved details. The glaze is quite dark, and matches nicely to the knotty looking piece of wood that serves as a stand. It stands 6 1/2" tall. It is in excellent condition, and is well preserved. Artist Shep Shapiro of Highland Park Illinois created this fruitful masterwork a number of years ago. He could be considered a folk artist. Working specifically in apples. The local paper did a feature on him in 1978. This is a fascinating sculpture that is different from anything you are likely to find. In my research I found that it is a wonderful Russian folk art carving from the 1940’s era. It shows a bear driving a sleigh with three galloping horses known as a“Troika. The carving is wonderfully detailed and every slice of the carver’s knife is clean and smooth; the texture is striking. The wood platform sits on four short legs. Each horse and the bear is carved separately and applied to a triangular-shaped wooden base. Strings are used to portray reins& leather to attach the sleigh to the shaft. Rare Peruvian Wood Carving South American Folk Art Woman W/Headdress Plaque
I was told this was from Peru but not sure. It could be any of the S. American countries. Beautifully carved(solid) wooden plaque of a woman with an intricate headdress. This plaque measures 13 x 9" and stands out from the wall approx. 3 1/2" It is in good condition except is missing one point of the headdress, shown in photo, and has a small crack running down the face in the wood. WOOD MASK TRIBAL ART This wood mask came from a man who traveled to Africa and Australia. This was one of his fabulous finds. This mask measures about 19 1/2" x 8" x 3 1/2" There is a small hook on the back to hang it by. The mask is in good condition. There are some areas of wear in the paint. But the wood foundation is solid yet lightweight. The paint wear shows most especially on the tip of the nose, parts of the beard, the forehead and top of the head piece. There is some faint black paint dripping on the side of one cheek in the red region. Overall, the marks in finish add to the authentic look of this unique mask. It is a visually arresting artifact! This figurine depicts a woman(I think) with fish-scaled skin and long dark brown real hair(human or animal) standing on a round pedestal. She/he is wearing Gladiator sandals-and what look like shorts-where the cracked paint is darker. I think this is a woman. Because of the small but notable breasts and a rounded belly(pregnant? The entire piece is made of carved. Painted wood.except the hair, which is nailed and stitched on. The base is two pieces nailed together; the legs, torso, and head are one solid piece of wood. The arms are nailed on at the shoulders and pieced together at the elbows. The feet are disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body-except the hands. Which are also huge. The arms articulate-at ... morethe shoulders and elbows. You must look at the photographs to appreciate the truly bizarre.creepy.statue. The skin appears scaly; it may be carved to look like fish scales, or the original paint is crackled with age. The circular pedestal is about 6¾" in diameter at the base. And is tiered to about 4" tall. The figurine itself is 10" tall, so the whole thing is nearly 14" tall. It(the base) looks to have about four or five layers of paint on it. One important detail is that is looks like there were other things or people on the original piece of work. The figure is on one half of the stand. Maybe she/he was fighting another with hands?
