English 4/4 violin bow, gold mounted, circa 1950s?
I am selling this full size violin bow for my son. We have had it for nearly 20 years. He used it for violin. But it's a little on the heavy side(62.5 grams) and lately I've been using it for viola. But now I'm selling that viola, too(see separate listing) so it's time to find a new home for this bow. It is made of pernambuco wood. With a gold-mounted ebony frog. The wrapping is real whalebone(not plastic) I would call it a very stiff bow. I don't know the maker. Years ago I picked it out of an estate collection of beautiful old Swiss and German bows from makers who were prominent in the 50s and 60s, and I had assumed that's where mine came from, too. But local experts since then have told be that the whalebone and certain features of the frog point to English origins. The pot has the old wood handle. It has a simple smooth finish design with gadrooned trim around the rim. The removable cover is topped with a ball finial. The pot was made around 1820 through the 1840s. The pot is not marked as is typical of the old Sheffield plate. The pot is in good condition overall. The pot is clean on the interior. The silver plating is worn in places as you can see in the photographs. There is a solder repair to the length of the spout on one side. This may be the original construction. Clark was one of the most noted American collectors of his era. A member of the Walpole Society, correspondent of many other noted collectors, and collector of furniture, rugs, art and many other fine things. This is the catalog of his collection of 17th and 18th century English furniture, catalogued by the dean of American furniture historians, Luke Vincent Lockwood, sold to Tiffany Studios, and exhibited at their New York City showrooms. Some of the pieces were sold to museums and collectors. And then the remainder were sold at auction in 1910 when Tiffany Studios needed more space for its artisans. Late 17th Century English Candlestick
This is a nice bell metal or bronze candlestick dating from the 1680's to 1710. It has lateral apertures indicating its early date. It is in excellent condition with a nice pleasing patina. It measures 6 1/2" tall and the octagonal base is 3 1/2" This candlestick could be Flemish. English or French. It is very difficult to pimpoint its origin. The shaft and base have been soldered. The interior is lined with velvet and it holds a small brass thimble. The detail is lovely and very realistic. The thimble is in excellent condition with no holes or other damage. It is about an American size 7(14 mm diameter opening) The boot is missing a little leather around the heel and on the sole. But it's not especially noticeable. It's in otherwise nice condition and it has a lovely old patina. It measures 1 1/2" high and the foot is 1 3/8" long. This auction is for 1 Vintage POOLE Engraved Serving Dish that is complete with the Cover. The Dish and Cover are both in excellent condition but does need to cleaned and polished. It was hard to get a good picture because of the reflection. But it is a very pretty dish and cover with a very nice design. The Cover is Engraved it has: Westbrook Invitational 2nd Pinehurst Flight 1966. The Dish has 4 legs and is marked on the bottom: BPCA Old English by POOLE 5001. I would assume it is Silver Plated but it is not marked so I do not know. The Dish with the Cover is 12 1/2" long and 9 1/2" wide. This simple. Yet classic Gothic design pitcher has a beautiful look and is in great condition. It has no chips, cracks or any discoloration. It has a round embossed mark on the bottom and incised within it reads"A. BROS.HANLEY" and"Gothic" There is a"18" in the center as well. This mark was used by G. L. Ashworth during the first few years he was in business. He was in business from 1862 to 1884. The Gothic craze ran mainly from 1840 to 1865. The stoneware of this pitcher is similar to that used by Charles Meigh for his"Apostle Jug" and his other Gothic pieces during the 1840s. This pitcher was more than likely produced between 1862 and 1865. The popularity of Gothic design had pretty much worn out during the very early 1860s. This beautiful pitcher measures 8"20.4 cm) in height and 6"15.3 ... morecm) in diameter. The handle is 5 3/4"14.8 cm) in length in extends another 2"5.1 cm) out, away from the pitcher. The flared base has a Gothic design and the embossed pattern on the body features overlapping arches, similar to a cathedral window. There is small stippling(dots) between the embossed designs that set off smooth raised areas. The"sparrow beak" spout is fluted and the handle is embossed with Bell flowers on either side. The handle and the interior of the pitcher are more highly glazed to prevent body oils, dirt, etc. from people's hands from leaving stains. This pitcher weighs 2 pounds. There is a tiny indentation on the outer rim of the bottom. This is not a chip. It is smooth and is a defect that occurred during production of the pitcher. This large and unusuaI shaped pitcher is in lovely condition. It is also very heavy. Weighing 4 pounds. It measures 9 3/4" 22.3 cm) in height, 5 1/2" 14 cm) in diameter at the mouth(or top) and is 7 1/2" 19 cm) in diameter at the widest point of the pitchers body. The mark on the bottom is an impressed crown with"Copeland" in an arc above it. To the right of this is an impressed letter"U" over the number"77" There is also an impressed letter"Z" to the right of the number. A few inches away from these marks is a blue transfer tiny"magnifying glass" shaped mark as well. The word England is not on the piece. This Copeland mark started being used in 1860 and use of the word"England" was regularly used after 1890. This means the pitcher was more than likely made between ... morethese two dates. The pitcher has a 2" border of blue transfer leaves and flowers under the glaze. It also has five embossed rings around the neck. There are 14 embossed white flowers that encircle the pitcher and three separate blue transfers of peonies, roses, buds, stems and leaves. It has a simple, thick handle that ends in a leaf shape. I have never seen this exact shape before. Made by"W. T. Copeland, Spode Works, Staffordshire, England. VINTAGE EARLY 20th C. ENGLISH SADLER & CO PITCHER W/ PEWTER LID
Antique English pewter-lidded pitcher. Made by Sadler& CO. Marked SADLER BURSLEM ENGLAND. This interesting and beautiful pitcher is made of pottery(earthenware) but is painted to look as if it were porcelain. I understand that this treatment of a pottery item as unusual. The lid is pewter and features a thumb tab set in a floral design. There is a crease in the front of the lid, but it is otherwise intact. The body of the pitcher is painted in two colors, dark blue(usually referred to as cobalt) on the top half and light blue on the bottom half. It is decorated with daisy-like flowers and has gold gilt lines around the waistline and bottom of the pitcher. As well as where the stylized light blue handle attaches to the pitcher. The bottom and inside are brown, the natural color of the pottery. Late 18th, early 19th century English or European Candlestick
This is a late 18th or early 19th century decorated candlestick. The shaft is seamed and it has a separate bobeche. Underneath the bobeche and the base there are traces of original silver finish. It is 10" tall and a 4 3/4" round base. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact country this is from. But some suggestions would be Germany, Italy, France or England. Grouping of three (3) English Federal Period Candlesticks
Round base. Tapering shaft brass candlesticks of the Federal period, ca. 1780-1800. All three candlesticks are similar in construction and design and incorporate the push up rod ejector system. They range in height from 8 3/4" to 9 3/4" high and 4" to 4 1/4" round bases. One candlestick is constructed of bronze or bell metal, the other two are brass. Nice old patina. Pretty 4 bottle-cut glass cruet set in a Electro Plated Nickel Silver holder which is in a nice oval shape. The 4 bottles all matrch. There is damage on the tray from the glass bottles sitting on it and this is common with these sets. There is a very tiny chip on the inside of one of the bottle's rim and this same bottle has a very small crack on the shoulder that is inside the bottle and very hard to see. The second bottle and the two stoppers do not have any chips or cracks. There is no damage on the mustard jar or pepper shaker. The tops of the jar and shaker are also EPNS. The cruet is 6.5 inches long. 4.75 inches wide and 6.75 to the top of the handle. The two bottles are 4inches to the top of their stoppers and the jar and pepper shaker are each 3 inches high. Lovely vintage writing case made in the most beautiful real calf leather and made in England. The calf leather has been really looked after and is really soft and supple. These six matching plates are in lovely condition. With no chips, cracks or hairlines, and considering that after over 200 years the set has not been separated or broken, one can only imagine are a rare find! Part of what might account for the integrity of the set is that they were purchased in England in the 1950s by an American antique dealer, and shut away well packaged in a warehouse until just recently. Each plate measures 10" 23.4 cm) in diameter. These plates are thinner than a lot of plates from this time and feel good to hold. These plates are not marked, as many of the early ones were not. The rim of each plate has a lovely fruit and flower border with grapes, melons, apples, stylized foliage and flowers with large pistols. The scenes are in a hexagonal frame laced with tiny swirls. These scenes were of great interest during ... morethe Regency Period(1790 to 1815) which gave way to sporting scenes and then floral motifs as the 19th century moved on. Spode was a leader in all patterns at the time, and also shared their engravings by Thomas Milton, taken from three volumes of"Views of Asia,Etc. The Clews Pottery, Swansea, Baker, and Bevins& Irwins were just some of the other potters that had access to Spode's patterns. Antique European English Oak Armoire Late 1700's- Early 1800's All Pegged
This is a beautiful antique wardrobe of English origin. We believe this piece dates to the late 1700's/early 1800s. Constructed from oak. This is a solid piece of funiture with peg construction. The overall dimensions of this piece are: height = 75 5/8" width at base =57 5/8" depth = 20" The top of this has a crest with dental molding. The cabinet at the crest measures 21 5/8" x 60.5" The armoire has two doors on the top case that have locks on them. The left door has a key and locks but we do not have the key for the right side. Both doors have brass knobs and hinges on them. I believe these are original pieces that have been polished. This top section measures as follows: width = 54" depth = 17 13/16" The inside dimensions for each side are: 25.5" wide x 46.5" height x 16" depth. There ... moreis a wall between the two sections. Both sections have rods for hanging clothes. Beneath this section is a bank of four drawers. The drawers are pegged as well. There are cracks on the top two drawers that have been repaired. VINTAGE 1960’s FIVE STRING BANJO GERMAN MAYBE ENGLISH OR SCOTTISH MADE EUROPEAN
For your consideration is this super nice all original 1960’s era German made five-string banjo and case. As mentioned in the title European for sure but could be other than German. Second most likely would be British, least likely Scottish. Well made maple constructed, three piece maple neck, maple laminated pot with substantial tone ring. I do see a IIII mark on the inside of the pot and the same IIII mark on the underside of the dowel stick. Model number? Very German thing to do looks like a German violin bow mark. The neck is straight up to about the 9th fret then turns down as if back bowed, almost looks intentional. It culminates in high action further up the neck. No modifications or repairs, all parts are original and functional. Original case is structurally fine and cosmetically nice. Interesting vintage banjo needs a good home ... moreand a good bath. This is a lovely rare PAIR of VINTAGE solid sterling silver soup spoons which was made in Sheffield. England in 1927 by the illustrious Victorian silversmith, Walter Trickett at his Holly Street workshops. Each measures 7 3/4" long and is almost 2" across its bowl. They are in the Old English pattern and neither is engraved to the handle. They are very substantial- each spoon weighs 70.5 grams- making a total weight of over 4 1/2 troy oz. They are in super condition with less than the usual surface scratching than you'd expect for their age and no dings or dents and without the usual wear to the bowls- SUPERB. This is a pretty antique ironstone platter or underplate that I bought at a little farm sale. It is English and dates to probably the 1860s or so. It is about 14" long. It has a clear mark of J&G Meakin. England on the back. There is light crazing due to its very old age. It has a few brownish spots here and there, again due to its long life and age. It has two minuscule pinhole only visible when held up to the light(looking from the reverse) This is the English version of the first series put out by the Bank of Canada. This is a adorable and unique English pickle jar! It looks like the turn of the century. It stands 91/2" in height to the top of the stand and 31/2" width at the base. The glass jar has a lovely square cut pattern with a removeable lid. The footed stand is silverplated and shows a beautiful open cut filigree pattern which also continues along the outer edge of the handle. It has a really neat little glass side jar that is removeable to catch the drips from the fork. The fork is silverplated and is marked Sheffield Eng. Silverplate on the back. This complete set is in excellent condition. There are no chips. Dings, damage or loss of silver. It has been cleaned and looks amazing.
