Antique English Silver Fish Server Set - Exquisite Detail - T Prime - Excellent!
This is an Antique Fish Serving Set by Thomas Prime& Sons of Birmingham. England. It is highly ornamented and detailed and features openwork of vines and flowers. The craftsmanship is of the highest quality. The handles are ornamented with deep scroll work, culminating with an oval and a shell. I've taken several photographs in bright light so that you can see the quality and condition of these pieces. The condition is excellent with no worn spots to the plating and only very minor age appropriate dings to the handles. Both pieces bear the hallmark of TP&S(Thomas Prime& Sons) the mark MP under a crown and within a shield, indicating the process of magneto plating, the A1 mark, indicating the high quality, The word Prime written in script with"Pri" above"me" There is also the mark of another crown. And a ... morecross within a shield. The TP&S mark was registered by Thomas Prime in December, 1859. The other marks appear to date this set between 1865-1892. This set is a wonderful large size for serving. The knife is 13 1/8 inches(33.5 centimeters) long and 1 15/16 inches(5 centimeters) wide. The fork is 9 7/8 inches(25.2 centimeters) long and 2 3/8 inches(6 centimeters) wide. Thomas Prime of Birmingham. England, established his firm in 1818. In 1844, a magneto plating machine was made for Prime by J.S. Woolrich, and is still on display at the Birmingham Science Museum. Michael Faraday is said to have visited Prime's factory to see how his theories of electro-magnetic induction were being put to practical use. In 1851, his sons joined the firm and it became Thomas Prime& Sons Magneto Plate Works. Prime exhibited at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851, and at the Paris Exhibition in 1856. Hallmarks Are As Shown In Pictures: Lion Passant(British Sterling) The Crowned Leopard Head, Date Mark"U" from 1815 and Sovereign's Head Mark of George III Facing Right(Otherwise Known As The Duty Mark) Maker's Mark Are Represented As Letters"R H" Update 3/22/2013: I have added a few pictures since the initial posting and in the process of taking the pictures I noticed some additional marks. I am unable to make sense of the marks because it is although the item has two different maker's marks. The other mark found is on the outer handle near the bottom insulator. It appears to be a" RP" But not sure that if that ... morewas it or if some might have worn off as it seems to be within a big sort of square. You may see this mark in the second to the very last picture provided. Also. I can't say for sure as I tried hard with a loupe to see, but it looks very much like the shapes of the Leopard Head and something else on the inside of the handle. Direct opposite side of the"RP" mark found(see last pic) I started to try to look into this, but in frustration have given up. Here are a few"RP" maker's marks listed in the link below. Up for auction is an antique sterling silver pin disc pendant for a chatelaine. The disc is 1.5" in diameter and 1/4" wide. The pincushion portion is dark burgundy velvet. The embossed design is the same on both sides. There are English hallmarks and the makers marks but I can't make them out. I believe the maker's first initial is J. It is a lovely piece. Just needs a little polish, add a chain and wear it as a pendant. It is from my mother's extensive collection of sewing implements. It presented with a very opaque brown finish hiding the beautiful swirl mahogany. I removed the opaque finish and discovered the beautiful graining on this chest. Including on the drawers and the cross banded mahogany around the top edge.The rich reddish brown mahogany has incredible grains as seen in some of the close up photos(close up of the drawer pull) I restored the finish with many, many coats of hand rubbed varnish over the natural mahogany. The chest is a true chest of drawers with drawers that increase in depth(graduated) as you go down the chest.I restored the chest from top to bottom including regluing and clamping all of the drawers. The ... moredrawers all feature precise dovetail construction. Both at the front& back corners of the drawers. The drawers all have a extra stiffener support board built into the middle bottom of the drawers, a sure indication of high quality& craftsmanship. This chest is rock solid& built like a tank, made from all hardwood construction.the mahogany is all veneered over poplar secondary woods. The drawers are made of oak.The drawers slide excellently. The Chippendale style bracket feet and wrap around trim details of the top and lower portions of the chest are superb details. the brasses are all original including the dummy keyhole escutcheons. The detail of the brasses is fantastic as you can see in the photos. I buffed the brasses and clear coated them with laquer. They do have some darkened areas on the brass with makes for great character and patina The pulls work perfectly.You won't find more intricate& beautiful pulls.all original.There is a makers branded mark on the outside of the top drawer.see photo) The top drawer has 2 removable oak dividers which can be used to divide the top drawer into 3 compartments. Or remove the dividers to have one large drawer.This
