This auction is for two early English Alfred Meakin FlowBlue Berry Bowls with rich vibrant cobalt blue and white colors. These bowls are the last remaining flow blue pieces from an antique estate. The first bowl depicted is in great shape and has no chips or cracks. The second bowl has a slight crazing in the center but is still a great bowl. We have acquired this gorgeous set of 23 pieces of English Stanley Pottery TOURAINE FLOW BLUE from the late 1800s. I will do my best to describe each piece… We have TEN 10” dinner plates. There are three with zero chips. There are three that have one small chip each on just the back, there are two with 3 small chips each on the back, one that has 4 small chips on the back and there is just one that has 2 chips on the front. All of the chips on the backs do not show on the front, so displayed, it would appear to be 9 w/o damage. None of these dinner plates have any crazing, however they all have some utensil marks and some gold loss. We have five 9” luncheon plates. There is one with no chips or crazing. There are two with 1 chip each on the back. One has crazing, and one does not. One has a chip on the front with crazing. One has just a flea ... morebite on the rims edge with no crazing. All five plates have some utensil marks and some gold loss. We have 8 soup bowls. Two of which are not as deep as the other six. There are three with no chips or crazing. There are three with no chips at all but they have crazing. There is one with a tiny chip on the front with no crazing and the last one has crazing and a hairline crack on the back that does not show to the front. This is the only piece from the entire set with any type of crack. All 8 bowls have some utensil marks and some gold loss. All of these pieces have varying degrees of fading; I’d say it depended on which pieces got the most sunlight in the cabinet they were stored in. Some of the utensil marks have some staining to them. But not terribly bad. All 23 pieces have been gently washed and are ready for a new home! Packed up. Medieval English Silver Groat Coin of King Edward III Ex Brackley Hoard- 1351 AD
An English Medieval silver Groat. Properly recorded and catalogued by the world famous British Museum, London. An Edward III fourth coinage silver groat. Struck 1351- 1377 A.D. at the London mint. A groat would have been equivalent to approximately £120($200) in Medieval times- enough to buy a sheep! This coin originates from the famous Brackley Hoard. A group of over 300 coins discovered in 2005 by a metal detectorist on agricultural land in Northamptonshire, England. The Brackley hoard is one of Britain's most significant archaeological finds and was the subject of considerable examination by the British Museum. Based on observation of the coin mint marks, which were only used for limited periods, archaeologists believe that the hoard was deposited in the year 1465. The summer of 1465 saw the height of the War of the Roses, a year ... morewhen King Henry VI was betrayed and captured in Northern England, then transported to the Tower of London. Although the circumstances of the hoard's deposition will probably remain a mystery, the coins were almost certainly buried in a cloth bag for later retrieval. We can speculate that the individual was either on the run and buried the coins in haste, or was a soldier, expecting to be gone for some time. Whatever the circumstances, the coins, equivalent to the average Englishman's life savings, were not seen again for nearly 550 years. After their discovery in 2005. An enormous, enigmatic hoard of over 80,000 coins, discovered beneath a Brussels pub in 1908 and subsequently sold at auction. Original condition with some gilt missing from the corvetto balls that dot the surround. Features an ebonized reeded slip at the rim of the convex mirror. There is a little black paint missing there also. The mirror has a couple of age spots but no major damage or fogging. The original metal link chain graces the reverse. There is an egg and dart motif on the four corners. A couple of the balls are a little loose but would only be noticed upon super close inspection.
