LARGE 19th CENTURY WOODEN DOUGH BOWL 15" x 5" w/ EARLY AMERICAN Nice Patina
This is an auction for a beautiful old wooden bowl. I was told that it is an early American 19th century hand turned dough bowl. It measures approximately 15" wide x 5" tall with a 3/4" lip. It shows extensive use. There seem to be cracks in the wood but the bowl is solid and doesn't show any signs of being loose or having any separation. It is a very nice bowl! It is fairly lightweight for such a large bowl. This was owned by Walter S. Gifford who was President of AT&T through most of the 1900's and Ambassador to Great Britain(worked with Winston Churchill) This was displayed at his country home at Thimble Farm in North Castle. New York. Originally, this bowl is likely from New England since he was from Massachusetts. Antique 15.5 inch Turned-Wood Dough Bowl The bowl is a 15 ½” by 14 ½” oval. It is 4 ¾” deep. I believe the wood is maple. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is a line in the wood which could give the appearance of a crack. See close up. It is a dark line in the grain which is not open- even under magnification. There are some chopping marks inside but they are relatively few and light. I don’t know how old it is but the oval shape would indicate some age. It is not signed or marked.

The rim treatment is expertly done and well-proportioned. The outside has light scratches from use around most of it. The interior patina is to die for. If wooden ware makes your heart beat faster. Offering this beautiful vintage handcarved bowl which I believe is made of mahogany wood. It has a beautiful. Rich deep color and grain as shown. There is one small wear spot on the inside bottom that is about 3/4 inch wide. No real damage, just a little spot where there is some wear to the surface. The bowl is in excellent condition and has no chips, cracks, stains or repairs. It is 3 5/8 inches tall, 11 inches wide on top and 4 1/2 wide on the bottom. A beautiful bowl for lots of uses. We have a vintage wooden dough bowl that we bought from an antique estate sale here in Middle Tennessee. It measures 24 3/4" long X 12 1/2" And comes up from the table 4 1/2 to 5" Handles are carved on each end of the bowl on the outside. The bowl has a shiny finish on parts of it where it hasn't worn off and and you will see in the pictures that the wood has split at each end on the inside. I don't know what kind of wood it is. An eBayer told me her hunch was it was Tiger Maple. It weighs 5 lbs. This old trencher has lots of character and would fit right into a Country Antique Kitchen setting. Here we have a wood antique dough bowl. This bowl has a swirling patern of scratches on the bottom and also has a crack on the side. There is a lot of wear on it from the age of the item. I purchased it at an antique store in Winter Haven Florida several years ago. I was told that it dated back to the late 1800.S to early 1900,s. Early-Pre1800-Hand Carved Treen Wooden Butter Worker-Dough Bowl-Lehigh Co.Pa
This is truly one of the finest primitive wooden ware pieces I have uncovered in several decades in the antique business. It is exciting to offer it to those who collect or just sit back and appreciate early and unusual treen bowls. Its history was verbally confirmed from the farm family where it was found in Lehigh County. Pa. It is a butter workers bowl in a very unusual shape and size. It is 22" long and 13.5" wide and 5" deep. It is definitely pre 1800 and all hand carved(see photos) from one solid piece of wood. I cannot give a 100% guarantee but based on the weight and color it looks like maple.I cannot give an ironclad warranty on this.The ends taper out and thicken and have an upward carved edge on the bottom and a flat sloped top.By looking at the shape,although different from most butter bowls, it is absolutely apparent ... morehow it lends itself to working butter with the traditionally flat but slightly curved paddles.The detractions as mentioned above should be considered character assets of a piece this old.It is remarkable that it was retained and not thrown by the wayside.I have tried to show this piece as best I can with the photos.
