17th. century Carved Oak Newel Post Statue
Here is an intriguing early carved figure whose identity is somewhat of a mystery. A bearded man who bears a coat of arms on his chest and other symbols carved onto his front. Appearing to be from the 17th. century and carved from English oak. Our guess as to it's purpose is that it once graced the newel post to a great Elizabethan or Jacobean staircase. The carved armorial featuring a chevron design to the left and a tower to the right undoubtedly belonged to the family of the house. Below this are carved three letters A L V, the meaning of which is now obscure. The front of his legs are carved with a trailing trellis design, while below his feet are carved with a primitive charm into the base. The mysterious figure stands approx. 12 1/2 inches high, with a base 4 1/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches. This is certainly one of the best quartered oak carved washstands manufactured during the late 19th century. A fabulous piece that can be used as a dresser in a bedroom. Both the drawer and the two doors are serpentine with original brass pulls. A shaped and beveled mirror in very good condition. And thought it was a fantastic cupboard. looking at the cupboard it is very old and l think its certainly a few hundred years old. But in the Victorian days they used to alter things, so it gives me the impression that it could have been altered maybe 100 years ago. So lam selling it as it is. SUPERB c1900 Art Nouveau CARVED Oak BAROMETER. In GWO & incredible condition
During January I was fortunate to secure the contract to refurbish the offices of a solicitor in The City of London. Whilst carrying out this lengthy renovation. It was decided that several antique items furnishing the premises were no longer required, as they sought to establish a new image. Quite unbelievably, this pristine barometer and a bracket clock of exceptional quality were offered to me, as reward for a job well done! I have kept both items for several weeks to ensure that they operate as well as they look. Which they do, and the clock will be listed later this week. This golden oak barometer measures 33" in length. With a maximum width of 10" The carving to the base and finial is crisp and clean with a distinct Art Nouveau influence and I would guess that this dates from the first years of the 20th century. Condition ... moreis quite simply superb. Both to the oak case and the barometer and thermometer displays, which I believe are milk glass. The brass bezel contains a thick bevelled glass, which is again unblemished. If you would like to keep the clock and barometer together. Maybe we can arrange a deal. Description This is nice piece that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. It was originally part of a built in closet front. It is made of oak. Has been painted and the stripped to bare wood. The top has a nice carved sunburst. There are corbels and nicely carved moldings. It measures 28.25 wide. 14.5 inches tall and is 5.75 inches thick at the top molding. Overall it is in very good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. You are looking at one fine piece of furniture. Part of JDI Collection* and purchased new by the current owner 25 years ago for a larger home than the bungalow* she now resides in. She paid just under a $1000.00 for it from an elite furniture store. The photos say it best. I have included with and without flash photos so you can see it the hues in different lights. To my eye it is a bit less red and a bit more golden(typical of fine oak) then either set of photos shows. Since the carved legs stand proud the base is larger than the top surface. The base is approximately 40" x 40" outside foot edge to outside foot edge) and the top is 36+" x 36+" Stands 17" off the floor. I have checked the web and a comparative is about $1200.00 today from JDI. Beware of lovely looking carved tables that are not the real thing. I found ... morea similar in appearance table that was selling for $400 to $600 dollars on line at 6 different web sites-read the review from a customer who paid several hundred dollars for it on line- Ball and Claw Coffee Table by Coaster We bought this because it looks great. It looks"heavy" it is actually made with pressed wood and synthetic materials. The legs won't even hold the screws tight. Bottom line. It"looks" great but is poorly made. NO PRESSED WOOD HERE! Look at the solid-thick-heavy oak legs. They are as tight to the frame as the day it was sold. This table is lifetime quality and may become a family heirloom. You can pay as much for a new nice looking piece of particle board as the opening bid on this real-quality piece. Thank you.
