I GOT THIS MASSIVE BOWL MANY YEARS AGO AT A SALE INSIDE AN OLD CONDEMNED HOUSE BUILT IN THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY. HOUSE WAS DARK. WITH NO ELECTRIC POWER/LIGHTS OR HEAT AT TIME OF THE SALE. THERE WAS A LOT OF ANTIQUE FURNITURE IN VARIOUS STAGES OF RESTORATION; LOTS OF WOOD PARTS FROM OTHER DISMANTLED FURNITURE, STRIPPED OUT FIREPLACE MANTELS AND VICTORIAN TRIM. THIS BOWL WAS AMONG THE CLUTTER IN THIS HOUSE. THE GUY CONDUCTING THE SALE SAID HE HAD BOUGHT THIS HOUSE WITH THE CONTENTS AND THAT WAS ABOUT ALL HE SAID ABOUT THE PLACE. I BOUGHT THE BOWL AND LEFT. THAT'S THE EXTENT OF MY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE BOWL'S ORIGIN. I'VE ASKED SEVERAL EXPERIENCED WOODWORKERS WHAT TYPE OF WOOD OR TREE THIS BURL CAME FROM. I'VE HEARD ... moreA LOT OF ANSWERS INCLUDING WALNUT. PECAN, BLACK WALNUT, CYPRUS, OLIVE WOOD AND A NUMBER OF OTHER EXOTICS THAT I'VE FORGOTTEN. I THINK IT SOME TYPE OF HARDWOOD AND NOT A PINE, CEDAR OR A CONIFER OF SOME TYPE. VERY HARD WOOD ISN'T SOFT LIKE SYCAMORE OR COTTONWOOD, EITHER. I QUIT WORRYING ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF WOOD IT WAS MADE OUT OF AND SET IT ON MY COFFEE TABLE TO ENJOY IT. WOOD IS VERY DENSE; WEIGHS OVER NINE(9) POUNDS. ROUGH TOP IS ALL NATURAL. ONLY THE INSIDE LOOKS LIKE IT WAS CARVED OUT AND SMOOTHED BY HUMAN HANDS. OUTSIDE OF BOWL HAS BEEN MINIMALLY WORKED, SANDED OR SMOOTHED BUT RETAINS OPEN KNOTS, IRREGULARITIES MOST OF THE ORIGINAL SHAPE. Beautiful. Unique, hand crafted bowl made from a burl that grew on a Michigan Maple tree. Created by woodworker Levi Soltis, this particular piece took nearly 9 hours to carve. Very Nakashima in flavor. This modern design burl bowl has great flow and movement. It appears to be a hollowed burl mounted on another burl, all in a beautiful mellow finish. Probably American. EXCEPTIONAL 1940s BURL BOWL ~ HUGE ~ 19" DIAMETER, 7" TALL ~ ORIGINAL CONDITION
Up for auction is an OUTSTANDING"BURL" BOWL! It is huge measuring 19" in diameter and 7" tall. It is in original condition- has not been painted. Repaired or stained. We don't know too much about it. The original owner dates it to as early as the 1940s. It was used in the family deli store from the 1940s to the 1950s then stored away. As you can see. There are some scratches and scuff from use. But the good new is there are no chips or cracks. There are some inperfections in the wood on the outside of the bowl- that is the way the wood was originally. It is amazing to see such a large bowl made from one piece of wood. We did not know anything about"burl" bowls so we did a quick search on the internet. Here is what we found: A burl results from a tree undergoing some form of stress. It may be caused by an ... moreinjury. Virus or fungus. Almost all burl wood is covered by bark. Even if it is underground. In some tree species, burls can grow to great size. Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood. Prized for its beauty and rarity. It is sought after by furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors. There are a number of well-known types of burls(each from a particular species) these are highly valued and sliced into veneers for furniture. Inlay in doors. Picture frames. Household objects, automobile interior paneling and trim, and woodturning. Burl wood is very hard to work with hand tools or on a lathe because its grain is twisted and interlocked. Causing it to chip and shatter unpredictably. This"wild grain" makes burl wood extremely dense and resistant to splitting, which made it valued for bowls, mallets, mauls and"beetles" or"beadles" for hammering chisels and driving wooden pegs. There are no markings on this bowl. We do not know what type of tree this came from. It is awesome. Unusual and rare to see a burl bowl of this size. Truly a unique item- a great collectible! This is a very unique and beautiful hand carved wood bowl from burl wood of unknown type. It is shaped in the form of a cougar or panther head. It measures 13"x13" at the ears it is 18" across. It's over all depth is 3.5" with the inside 3" deep and the edge is about 1/2" wide. It has wear marks from use but no cracks or major damage. Never seen another like it. Antique Virginia Native American BURL WOOD CUP Bowl * Ancient Indian Artifact
This is a very old burl wood bowl from an old Dinwiddie Va family who came to that area to farm in the 1830's. This was said to have been from a Virginia indian tribe of that area but they couldn't say which tribe. This piece had been in the family since the 1800's. At some point one of the children penciled some indian looking designs on the sides. They are very faded and could be further cleaned off. Much use wear to this piece giving it great character. Attached to this is a tightly twisted double-ply red and white calico strap, knotted on either end. Naturally Elegant Burl Wooden Bowl Basket With Handle Hand Carved 12" x 9 1/2"
This sunning wooden burl basket measures 12" long. 9 1/2" wide and 9" tall. I'm not sure what type of wood it is, it might be white oak. It has several holes, 2 on the side and one on the bottom, but they just result from the natural wood grain. There is a small square stamp in the wood on the bottom that may be the artist's mark. If there are any other baskets like this one, each will be different and unique because of the natural features of the wood. I do not know the type of wood this wonderful bowl was carved from. It is about 11 in. at the widest and about 9 in. high at the peak of the handle. It is in good condition with just one small hole(3/4 x 1/2 in. where the carved spot was thin and must have gotten broken out during use. Please see the pictures to assess the impact of this. Here is a nice primitive American Ash Burl Bowl of good size. It has a dark patina. Two age cracks at the rim, is 12 1/2" in dis. x 3" high. It is a thin wall bowl with a carved rim, deep foot ring on the bottom, and shows its wear and use(many cutting marks are visible inside) It dates from the late 1700's to the early 1800's. Probably sometime in the 60's, the varnish giving it a light golden caramel color. Bottom, unfinished, shows it's true, Grayish color. Hand carved live-edge manzanita burl bowl
Unique hand carved bowl. Cut from a manzanita burl. The inside surface of the bowl has seen normal use and has some scratches in the finish. As seen in the pictures. The bowl is cut from a live-edge piece of manzanita and the live-edge outer surface is in very good condition. The bottom is covered with thin green felt, as seen on picture. There are no artists marks visible, although there may be something under the felt that can't be seen. Bowl measures 13 1/2 inches in it's longest dimention and 6 inches high. It is irregular in shape. Not symmetrical.

Was formed over 100 years by carpenter ants but is now insect free.
