Hello and thank you for looking! I have for your consideration a very nice vintage Black Forest Tree Spirit carving. He is really charming. He measures about 10" tall and about 9" wide. He is hand carved from a root. He was created in the Germany Black Forest area sometime in the 1960's-1970's. He is in great condition for his age with only a little chipping of the wood on one end of the root tips. Please view the photos as they are the best description I can give you of the piece.a picture can say more than I can The history of the European tree spirits is really interesting.here's some folklore info was able to dig up. In Germany there were dwarf like characters called"Wurtzelgrabers" which roughly translated means root diggers. They would come out at night. ANTIQUE CARVED SWISS BLACK FOREST LIDDED BOX RELIEF CARVING VINE LEAVES C.19th C
Antique Heavily Carved Wooden Box. Probably of Swiss or German Black Forest Origin. A lidded hardwood box heavily carved in relief on the exterior with vine leaves and berries. This to the lid, and all the sides. Within there is further detailed carving to the underside of the lid. The inside has a cedar? lining with two compatments but the divider is now missing. The lid is hinged on two brass hinges. Outside dimensions 8 x 6 x 3.5 inches approx. The carving is particularly heavy and deep on the top of the lid.Date circa 19th century. Condition: Of some age and now in need of some tlc. The exterior of dark aged colour whilst the inside retains a lighter hue. A couple of internal joints show some glue which could be an amateur repair. Whilst the green baize to the underside is later or a later replacement. Hinges probably not original. Back ... morepanel under one hinge showes a crude repair. A few tiny white paint flecks.A good clean and repolish would be beneficial. despite all this, this is an unusual item in view of the very heavy carving and once restored would make a lovely usable/display item.

The figure was hand crafted by the artists of the South Tyrol company in the traditional Groden Valley/ Val Gardena/ Italian Alps style. This figure is Anri's No. 688891. Which was in production during the 1960's/ 1970's(it appears in their 1974 catalog) The figure is titled"Innkeeper" and shows a charming gent in traditional Tyrol attire holding a wine bottle, key ring and pitcher. The figure is beautifully carved with fine detail seen throughout. The hand painted finish shows rich color, nice detail and excellent coverage. I'm thinking this wood carved face nut cracker could be Black Forest. But not totally sure. The wood has a beautiful patina, but the handle does have some scratch marks on it as you can see in the photo and his left eye has a chip off the corner and the other eyes has small chip outs. Open the handles and his mouth opens to insert the nut, then crunch the handles together to break the nut. Well carved, but cannot see a name on it anywhere.
