Offered for sale is this exquisite German Black Forest wood carving"Squirrel on tree trunk" The squirrel is grabbing a little animal on its left front claws and the right front claws are grabbing the trunk. The tree trunk is surrounding by some leaves. Tree fern and rocks. The piece has one or two leaves damage and some old worm bites, overall it is in excellent condition for age. No signature and the exact age unknown, probably 1900's or so. The trunk is hollow on top, it size about 2-1/2"in depth. x 2-3/4"in diameter. Th is wonderfully carved sitting bear has a hinged head which opens up to reveal a cavity which I assume would be used as a tobacco container or something similar. He is quite large. Measuring 8½" high to the tip of his nose and weighing 435 grammes. Apart from a little play wear he is in very good condition with no damage that I can see. Judging from his condition. I would think that he dates to circa 1940's although he could be a lot earlier dating back to circa 1900's which was the peak of the Swiss carved or Black Forest bears. This Ibex may have been the centerpiece of a large ornate wall plaque but is just a terrific looking head mount now. The Ibex has glass eyes and is a stunning Black Forest piece from Germany. Vintage Cuckoo Clock, Black Forest, Germany, Welby 8 Day, Bird & Leaf Carving
This is a lovely Black Forest. Germany Welby 8 day cuckoo clock that we acquired from the home of an 87 year old woman who was downsizing a bit by selling some of her mother's belongings. It dates to circa 1950s. It had been carefully stored with the top piece, pendulum and weights removed for many years. Its overall cosmetic condition is very good, except for a very few scratches and minor dings to the wood which would be expected after about 60 years. I good polishing would greatly improve its appearance. The one glaring flaw is the loss of the Roman numeral IV on the clock's face. The chains and metal hooks are rusty. The two weights, made to look like pinecones, weigh almost 3 pounds each. Please enlarge the photos so you can see the fine quality of the carvings. The clock. Without the top piece, measures approximately 11-3/4" ... morehigh at the highest point, 8" wide and 4-1/2" deep. The top carved piece hooks on, has an approximate 10" span and is about 6-1/4" tall. The carved pendulum also hooks on and is 6" long. The previous owner told us that the clock worked when it was packed away but she couldn't remember how long ago that had been. We have not assembled it and tested it so we DO NOT KNOW WHETHER IT WORKS. My suspicion is that it may very well need some mechanical attention. The inner workings don't appear to have been tampered with but there is grease and dust present that will no doubt need to be cleaned up. There is a fragile. Torn insert folded inside the back of the clock giving"Instructions for the Assembly of the Welby 8 Day Cuckoo Clock" but it is only partially readable and manufacturer's information is missing. Vintage German Black Forest Wood Carving - Spainiard?
This German carving is full of character! The representative culture is difficult to determine; my best guess is Spain. It is hand carved from what appears to be a single piece of wood. The piece has an intriguing natural wood grain. The wood is solid and a heavy 3 lbs. He stands 17" tall and has a width-wise 7" base. There is a"natural appearing" cross-grain wood crack on the base. Behind his right foot(see images) The lantern is intact. The long handled axe appears to have bee taped in its center, to repair a crack or separation. It is a good repair job and the handle is firm. There are s few surface scrapes, which to not affect the integrity of the wood and can be easily removed(see images of back side cape"nape of neck" and left calf" There are not any dings or broken off wood pieces. For sale is an antique Black Forest Wood Carving. From around 1859 to the early 1960's. The carving is of 2 men hugging or dancing. And obviously drinking.One has a stein. What makes this a very rare is the man on the right. Has military clothing. He is wearing A French Zouave. Hat and leather chap's or Gaiter's. These were uniform. Parts worn during the Franco Austrian War of 1859. Zuave's were French soldier's sent to Austria. After the war the Zouave Soldier's were stationed at Versallies. They are standing over an Edelweiss flower. Austria's national flower.This makes me think that it's a carving. Representing a Peace Treaty Celebration. You can see a spot of white where the flowers were painted. The entire West side of the Black Forest Region is the. French boarder. Some extra homework told me the leather ... morechap's. Or gaiters were only made of leather in the early years. This could be seen as Trench Art or a celebration of. Armistice or treaty. I do not know if it was mounted to.
