Primitive Antique 1800s Tin Spice Box With Original Nutmeg Grater Inside I have to tell you about the auction that I went to last week. It was in Geneva Illinois. In a sandstone building that was built before the Civil War. The sale was the final liquidation of an antique store(they‘d had one previous auction- so much stuff, they had to have two) that used to operate out of this location- but the building has been closed, as well as the business, for over 20 years following the passing of the previous owners. Now, we’re talking two stories, an attic and a basement PACKED with antiques- it’s hard to imagine, and all of it just sitting for two decades. These folks had amassed a huge antique collection- many many items dating back to the early 1800s and before. There’s some gorgeous pieces of primitive Americana that I found. I can’t tell you ... morehow excited I am to be listing my treasures from the sale. I will be listing them for weeks to come. I also have the last of my farm auctions and South Dakota finds listed this week, so there’s something for everyone! Here is a wonderful old tin spice box from the auction- it is the kind that has the built in nutmeg grater on the inside. And the(also built in) partitions for the spices. I located it in one of my favorite reference books, and it dates back to 1895. This is a small round tin box that measures 6 1/4" diameter, 5 1/2" tall to the top of the metal knob on the top and 4 1/2" tall to the top of the box along- knob not included. Inside, you have 5 compartments that measure 2 3/4" widest by 2 3/4" tallest and 2" deep. The nutmeg grater has a black finished round top that is 1 5/8" diameter and fits perfectly on top of the round raised spot in the center of the box. The grater itself measures 2 1/2" long by 1" diameter at the grater end. The box weighs 1 1/2 lbs and has its original clasp closure on the front- with a loop where a lock could be attached- I do not have a lock for it. The box is in excellent solid and sturdy stru

I have owned this for decades and always assumed it to be a spice tower but I cannot find any information about the tweezer or attached rope chained"crusher" pestle" type attachment. The piece does stand straight though the photo may appear leaning. It is not leaning at all. Not certain what it was used for but possibly spice or scent. 7" high with the small shaker lid in place. The top has a hole in the center where the shaker"lid" attaches. This lid is loose and though it feels like it snaps on. It will not stay on when turned over for use, so it needs a small adjustment by a professional. Good overall condition. Though I did not clean or polish this at all. Wonderful 19th c. dovetailed wood spice box(6" long X 4" wide X 3" high) with slide lid. 4 divided compartments, and fine inlay at the base. A paper label on the underside of the slide lid has a handwritten 1810 date and the initials"T.B.B" in script. I believe the wood is cherry. The inlay runs around the bottom edge on all four sides. Old residue and fragrance, just one very tight old shrinkage check on lid, no looseness, hardly seen, please see pic, magnified x 10. Quite hefty for its size. I believe this fine treen jar is about c 1850 or earlier but will ere on the side of caution and place the age range up to the 1880s.Nice turnings, just a great little covered jar. About 4.5 inches to top of carved finial, about 3 inches ... moreacross its turned base, and about 3.25 inches across mouth of box.Inside the lid is a pinwheel floral design incised on the bottom. Long ago the very tip of finial may have been more pointed, hard to tell, smooth no discenible break. A few teeny expected bumps, teensie shallow checks and bruises on edge of lid, not unsightly, lid fits perfect, not overly tight tho must be placed just so due to slight age shrinkage and after placing it, if you give it a little extra turn it locks the lid in place. It is what I would describe as a spice chest/canister set that is meant to be mounted on the wall. The words are in Dutch and the drawers are porcelain or pottery. No damage anywhere which is extraordinary given the way the drawers are made with the handles that come up off the front profile. Notice the charming egg compartment. When I purchased this the two handblown glass eggs were in there. LOVE THIS PIECE! Measures 23" x 16" x 5.5" deep. Wonderful antique wooden spice rack with ceramic drawers to hold sugar, coffee, tea, spices and eggs! Original pattern on the ceramic. Has 12 ceramic drawers(6 big ones and 6 small) and a door with also the original tile and doorknob in the middle that opens to a compartment with a egg shelf. Has a nice warm rich stain on the wood. Very rare and still very useable. Measures a nice large size 40cm tall by 60cm wide. By 16cm deep. Just a great piece for anywhere you may need it in the kitchen.

Maker worked at the Sparrows Point shipyard grocery store prior to WWI. This was made from old wooden shipping crates as a gift for his mother- some partial labels are still on the inside of drawers. antique kitchen spice rack tin metal 8 drawer hanging chest folk art primitive
This auction is for an antique painted tin spice chest with 8 all-tin drawers that slide completely in and out. The drawers have unusual barrel-curved sides and are lined with victorian floral paper. The front of the chest has nice ribbed details separating the drawers as well as on the base trim and arched top. The back has been punched with two holes for wall hanging. behind the arched top is a decorative peaked roof that appears to have split along an old solder seam but is held together with old wire. There are minor dents and dings but nothing that affects display and use. There are multiple layers of paint on this piece. The top layer being a very nicely crazed black over tan. Primitive Antique Wood Kitchen Counter Cabinet Two Drawer Spice Storage Great!!
Here's a fabulous primitive two drawer folk art cabinet which is perfect for displaying on a counter in your kitchen or dining room. It is a great old piece and will add a lot of charm and storage to your kitchen. There are other uses for it too. Use it as a small table in a tight space. The finish is rough as it was used for many years but it's still structurally strong and ready for you to use. The sides are made from slats of wood which are pickle stained on the opposite side(the side that you don't see unless you turn it upside down. There is chipping to the back of the piece as if it was veneered(no slats on back) but you will not see the back if put on counter against a wall. Nails of different kinds hold this piece together and it looks as if some were added as the years went on. The corners and edges are worn from years ... moreof use. This is true wear not reproduction wear- this piece is very old and well used. There are paint smudges, splatters, a small round patch to cover what I think was a nail hole. The knobs are made of wood, and are lighter in color than the body. The top and front are made from 3/4" thick, solid pieces of wood(probably pine) This was a utilitarian piece, one that was used a lot for a long time so it shows it's age. If early American/primitive is your look, this is perfect! You can clean it up or leave it as it. I will leave that to you. Measurements: 18 1/2" deep x 15" h x 9 1/2"w and fits nicely on a conventional sized countertop with room to spare in front. The drawers are 18" long x 5" deep, great to hold linens, candles, utensils, etc. The best representation of condition are the photos. I take as many as 12 to show you the condition. Antique Wooden Spice Container Measuring 9.25" 23.5cm) high Bit of a mystery item but without doubt it has been used as a spice container as it has a lovely rich smell of turmeric and some yellow staining to the interior! As to origin at a guess I would say North African although that is a guess and as for age then anyone's guess is as good as mine although I think it could have quite a bit of age due to the patina and interior usage. I purchased this from an artists estate who had previously used it as a prop for still life painting. His estate contained an eclectic mix of ancient artefacts through to contemporary design. Turned wood with a lid with finial. It looks at some point it has been decorated or covered in a protective outer layer. I assume to keep the content fresh? There are the remains of an old red wax seal to the underside ... morewhich is indecipherable. CONDITION: Obviously very well used. Antique Hoosier Spice Jars and Rack - 7 Jars and Original Hanging Rack!
Up for auction is a great. Antique set of Hoosier ribbed spice jars and the hanging rack! This set was found, as is, at a local estate sale. There are 7 jars total, 4 with holes and 3 without the holes. They have the flat surface on the fronts. where the labels would go- one still has a partial label on it. The jars are 4 1'2" tall and have no chips or cracks. The rack is metal with a wooden center, and a hook at the top. This set would have been hanging inside a Hoosier kitchen cabinet, and you would have spun the rack around to get the spice that was needed. The rack has flaking paint, and probably needs to be brushed off and repainted(in my opinion) This is really a great set. I have collected these over the years and hate to see them"fly" This is a very rare antique German 800 silver figural goose spice box with a beautiful gilded interior. The back hinges and closes shut perfectly. The feathers and feet are wonderfully hand chased and finished. There are yellow and black glass eyes for the goose. The bottom of one foot has the"800" hallmark with the German crown and crescent moon mark. And also marked"Germany" The goose is a bit wobbley but will stand on his own. The feet probably need a minor adjustment to stand firmly. The goose measures a large 9 1/4" long and 5 3/4" tall, and weighs a heavy 382.4 grams or 12.295 troy ounces. It belonged to an English family that emigrated to the U.S. in 1942. In the late 1800s this was also used as an ink dryer by placing talcum powder inside the container and sprinkling it on the paper. For sale is an antique vintage cabinet which I think was used for spices or as a desk set. It has 4 drawers which each have a small porcelain pull and two compartments. On the base there is a flip door for storing larger items.There is a very old hanger for attaching to the wall but could also be set on a cabinet. The size is larger at 19" tall by 8" deep and 11" wide. There are some chips(see pictures) but these only add to the look. Some of the wood looks oak and some pine or a lighter wood. Up for auction. From a local Maine estate, we have an antique hand hammered or metal relief box or caddy. I am unsure of the exact origin. Could be India or China or Tibet? Scenes of everyday life are depicted all around the piece in relief or repousse' Pictures of a woman, doing what looks to be washing. Two men sitting. One looks like he is either smoking or sipping something from a vessel. The other man looks like he is weaving, I believe. There are huts or houses, palm trees and leaves. All have bare feet. The men wear a pointed style hat. The woman looks like she wears a long scarf tied around her head. There are four, round agate cabochons set in primitive looking prong settings on the main piece and four more set on the lid. The lid has another figure standing with hands on his hips, along with more palm leaves. There are two layers ... moreto the piece. An inner liner is smooth inside the cup and the lid. I am unsure what type of metal this is made from, but it is not really heavy. I cannot find any maker's marks. Please see all pictures for more description.
