But I believe this is a healthy piece of millinery history with a handsome patina. As with any old wood piece, there are scratches, scuffs and other blemishes that come with a long journey. My favorite nuances are the faded lettering on the inside sections of the pieces when the mold is separated. The only condition issue that I would like to point out is that somewhere along the line. Someone replaced the screwed supports that hold the five sections together. See photos. The photos may not perfectly capture the nuances of this fine piece. Approx 7" tall. Stamped"892/ 20HS/ H P C/ A" on the top. Seems to be heavy aluminum. I've seen a lot of antiques and millinery items. But most old hat blocks are wood-this is unusual. Weighs 4.4 lbs before packing.

With two pegs for the head mold, the brim sloping for what looks to be a large men's wide brim fedora. Can't tell what the wood is. Some sort of hardwood, possibly poplar No splits or breaks, tiny hairline separations. See photos. Stamped 22 by one of the pegs. And 22, and what looks like a G-6 and then what is most likely the manufacturer's logo, GC in a shield on the sloped area between the top rim and the base, The area between the edge of the rim and the base is most assuredly hand carved. This is a nice piece which would look great in any room. It will make a fantastic hat or wig stand on a dressing table etc, or usable for it's intended purpose of forming hats. Condition is generally good with some ancient cracking no chips. Or worm holes. The block appears to be formed from three pieces of wood. With the joints being visible, I believe that the block can be unscrewed(although I haven't attempted this) to allow various sizes of crown to be made, from the same block. Here is a most unusual antique milliners adjustable wooden hat block/stretcher. The hat block is oval in shape& has a metal turning spindle inside. Which when turned opens up the oval. There are three numbers stamped on the top, 6, 5& 8, when closed the hat block/ stretcher measures 17.7 x 15.3 cm. it is 6 cm. high& the thickness of the wood is 2.5 up to 5 cm. When opened it is 20.5 x 15.3 cm.

Mold dimensions are 6 7/8 x 6 1/8 x approximately 7 1/8" tall. There are cracks and splits in the mold's dark wood consistent with age. See photos for more information. There is what I assume is a repair to correct split on the bottom(See photos) It appears well used with a number of scratches in the wood.

The piece consists of three parts: wood base(shows wear and age, has a crack in the middle) round wood block( very well stamped and marked, one of the markings reads"Hat Block Co. stamp is not very clear, also has a serial number) and a cast metal, pretty heavy top(good used condition) All three pieces are being held together with a screw(possibly a replacement) nice and tight. We are unsure of the exact kind if head gear this firm was used for, but considering the heavy metal tip, it was most likely made for hard material, possibly leather or metal.
