At its base it measure 6 1/2" from front ... moreto back and 6 1/2" from side to side. The lifter fits this crown very well and also has a head size of 22 1/2" It is 1/2" thick and would raise the height of the crown by this additional amount. The shallow crown has a circumference of 24" even though the measurement 22 1/2" is incised on the bottom. It has a diameter of 8' front to back and 7" side to side. The lifter doesn't fit this crown. Also there is a 3/4" long shallow divot on the top. It won't show much on a felt or velour body. But might on a fine straw. The brim has a circumference of 46" and measures 15" from front to back and 14" from side to side. The block's peg holes allow crowns to be placed in either direction. This was a well used brim, as can be seen by the hundreds of tack holes around the base, and several chips occurred along the edge. Many of those have been repaired with wood epoxy, but the edges are still not completely smooth. All four pieces have been recently lacquered and I am including one peg with the set.

Recently widowed, she left her house as it was, came to Oregon and said she was never going back ... morehome. She was an avid and well known antique dealer and collector in Los Angeles in the mid to later 1900's. We moved over 700 boxes of items from her house. Along with many pieces of furniture. 1 of her pieces has been on the Antique Road Show. I built a 7000 sq. foot building to accommodate all her collections. She never opened a box. She died about 6 years ago. And we have just begun the process of going through the boxes ourselves. It is an arduous process. Some items will go to concession dealers. Some are given away, some things donated, some are kept and some things are offered here. I used to write a bit of the history at the beginning of each ad. I have decided to write this, and when a bit of provenance fits, I will include this introduction. These items were collected many years ago by a very sweet and knowledgeable lady. Wish she was here to tell me about each item we offer, but, I am on my own, and will do my best to describe. I unpacked a box with a number of these hat forms or"molds" I do not know much about them. I have no idea how old it is but it's definitely vintage. I purchased a lot of 3 vintage hat blocks from the estate of a woman who was a skilled dress& hat maker. She moved to Florida 30+ yrs ago from New York so perhaps the blocks came from there? Block has a really nice patina to the wood and no damage(chips. Cracks, repairs) The lighting is off in the pic of the bottom so it's not true to color. Block has pin holes and tool marks from useage on the head as shown. The center piece slips out first so the mold can ... morebe disassembled to be removed from the finished hat. There are 5 pieces. This block has sort of a beak on the back side. I don't know what kind of wood it is. But it is very heavy. It is stamped with the manufacturers name. But I can't quite read it. It is" something) hat blocks N.Y. It is stamped with identifying numbers 185 and 424. It is also stamped" front" and"22" which is the size. You'll see in the photos that one side of the interior has a bit of backwards newsprint. Probably left after resting on the paper. This rustic millinery industrial mold is probably from the 1940s or 50s and it is in excellent condition with only the wear and tear from real use.

The number 2030 handwritten on the base. And there's a maker's mark on the top in white lettering, but it has worn off& I can't make out the words. I'm 98% the first word is 5 maybe 6 letters long, starts with an'R' and ends with an'OM' The other two words are unreadable. The block is constructed with 2 sliding interlocking pieces, secured with screws on each side. Some of the screws have been removed so the 2'halves' slide apart along a metal fastening bar. Hat portion of the block measures 7 1/2 tall x 7" long x 6" wide(tough to measure on the curve) Base measures 7" long x 6" wide x 3" tall(front) 2 1/4" tall(back) with 3 holes for stand on bottom. I have no idea how old it is but it's definitely vintage. I purchased a lot of 3 vintage hat blocks from the estate of a woman who was a skilled dress& hat maker. Vintage Antique Wooden Hat Form Stretcher Millinery Block Mold Old DETROIT
This auction is for a vintage antique wooden hat stretcher from an old millinery/hat shop. The previous owner used to work for Hughes& Hatchers Men's Store in Downtown Detroit where a man's hat was a necessity back in the day. This mold is marked with the number 6 1/8 stamped into the wood. The center handle rotates and makes the mold expand out to 7 1/2" It works smoothly and with no problems. Made entirely of wood. For your consideration: This is a wooden hat making block. This sort of hat mold works like a puzzle. The center piece slips out first so the mold can be disassembled to be removed from the finished hat. There are 5 pieces. This block has sort of a beak on the back side. I don't know what kind of wood it is. But it is very heavy. It is stamped with the manufacturers name. But I can't quite read it. It is" something) hat blocks N.Y. It is stamped with identifying numbers 185 and 424. It is also stamped" front" and"22" which is the size. You'll see in the photos that one side of the interior has a bit of backwards newsprint. Probably left after resting on the paper. This rustic millinery industrial mold is probably from the 1940s or 50s and it is in excellent condition with only the wear and tear from real ... moreuse.

This is a quite old ANTIQUE HARD WOOD MILLINERY HAT BLOCK from the 1900's! It was last used by our family in the 1930's and has been in storage since. As you can see. There are no pin holes, carving" cuts, or deep scratches anywhere on the crown. This BLOCK even has the"seams" etched in it as a template for stitching hat pieces together or for making it easier to mark the fabric pieces. The HAT BLOCK is 7-3/8" at the base x 6" wide x 4-1/2" high. The pedestal mounting center hole is 1-7/8" deep x 1-1/4" wide. The"stabilizer" holes are 5" apart and 1/2" deep. Made of a lightweight wood, possibly balsa, measuring 22" around, and 6 1/2" side to side across the top, x 7 1/4" front to back across the top. The hat form measures about 7 1/2" high. From the recent local estate of a lifelong hat maker. I have a few other hat forms available this week, and will gladly combine shipping for multiple auction purchases. So after a wool or felt hat had dried overnight the pieces could separate to release the hat. This has an incredible look. Great for industrial decor. It still has the hard to find metal TIPPER ring that puts the nice crease groove in the top. I have had a good collection of these hard to find industrial hat makers forms. Great old hat block or forms. 2(3 actually) piece heavy wooden molds. There is a crown mold and a brim. Crown is a blonde wood made of 5 pieces glued together. It measures aprox. 7-1/2" x 6-1/4" x 5-1/2" tall and 22-1/2" around. There are 3 holes on bottom for putting on a stand or press. Marked 7(size) and 4-1/4 JMD. M.A. Cuming New York. They were a Bleeker Street hat maker established in 1873. Last picture is an ad from a 1921 magazine. The brim is a darker wood. It is marked 777 7-1/4(size) and 2. There is a ridge around the bottom and an indent on inside(probably for easy graspiong) It originally was a 12" x 10-3/4" oval with round disks nailed in the base and a hole in center to afix on press. This piece was manufactured during the early part of the 20th century and is made of wood with a metal adjusting handle in the center. This piece measures approximately 6 3/4" across at the bottom when closed and 8 1/4" across when the metal adjusting handle is extended all the way out. Size"6 3/4" is stamped into the wood on the bottom side. The piece has no other markings. Obviously. With this piece being approximately 100 years old there will be some wear to to wood.
