Vintage Antique Hard Wood Hat Mold Block - made into mirror - unique piece!
Very unique mirror made from an antique hat mold- the mold has 2 5/8. 6 3/4 stamped along with KEITH in caps- was purchased in Danbury CT at Danbury Fair so thought from Danbury but I can faintly see on the other end letter M, maybe A then other letters then NG and CO, NY under that so New York hatmaker- can not make out entire name. Really unique piece for the wall- paper on backside has a little tears- showed also on the wall- great collectible piece for hat collector/mold collector- the wood is gorgeous. It has a double wide string groove and another single string groove below that. And it has what appears to be a"runner down"stapled to the side near the base- a super handy tool used to harness the string and push the string into the string groove so you have enough felt for the welt. Imprinted with the manufacturer signature"Empire Hat Block Co. NY" the size"21 1/2" FRONT" and the form number"1818" In pencil, the name"Dunhill" is written in cursive. Another added bonus. Measuring 6" in height x 7" front to back x 6" in width. It is in very good antique condition with metal staples. Pin holes at the back and abrasions on the wood, but it has a great aged ... morepatina and smooth finish. As can be seen in the photographs, it does have a crack running perfectly down the center from front to back(the separation of two blocks of wood) Just another one of those vintage features! I believe the style of hat this was for is called cloche- bell or dome shaped hat. This mold form consists of a central piece on a rod where 3 hat pieces fit onto to form the cloche hat. This is all cast aluminum and quite heavy, it was part of the manufacturer's industrial line of hat mold forms. The hat mold form itself measures about 22-1/2" around at the crown band, and brim is about 2-1/4" in front and tapers to about 1-3/4" in back. Rod will be removed to ship. It is in the style of a flat-top hat. The wood is smooth. And has some hairline cracks(see pictures) which do not go through the block. The brim is very solid. And is marked on the bottom 2-3/4(brim height in inches) 6-3/4(head size- American) and 16(style number for this particular brim shape) I can’t find any other markings. So I don’t know who the manufacturer is. It measures approximately 2-5/8” tall x 13” long x 11-1/4” wide(it’s oblong) The top is also solid. With one crack, which has been repaired(I assume it was done while still being used) It is marked on the bottom 5-5/8(crown height in inches) 6-3/4(head size- American) and 58(style number for this crown shape) ... moreIt measures approximately 5" tall x 7-1/2" x 6-1/8" oblong) It fits nicely inside of the brim(see pictures) Please take a look at my pictures. 14 years ago. My mother-in-law came to live with us. Recently widowed, she left her house as it was, came to Oregon and said she was never going back home. We told her we would pack her house up, pack EVERYTHING, and bring here for her to sort through at her pleasure. Her house was much like a museum. She was an avid and well known antique dealer and collector in Los Angeles in the mid to later 1900's. We moved over 700 boxes of items from her house. Along with many pieces of furniture. 1 of her pieces has been on the Antique Road Show. I built a 7000 sq. foot building to accommodate all her collections. She never opened a box. She died about 6 years ago. And we have just begun the process of going through the boxes ourselves. It is an arduous process. Some items will go to concession dealers. Su rface scuffs and stains. Outside measurements: The mold measures approximately 6 1/2 inches across by 7 inches when completely closed.
