Original, steel-engraved map of Turkey, containing the Provinces in Asia Minor, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall(title-page of the atlas is shown below. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. Vintage 19th century antique map of Persia and Arabia
This is a lovely example of AJ Johnson's 1862 map of the Middle East and Persia. This rare map appeared only in the earliest editions of his New Illustrated Family Atlas and features the Ottoman Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. As well as modern Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. Three decorative vignettes feature images of the Omani capital, Muscat, along with the castle and port of Smyrna and Trebisond on the Black Sea. It features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. It measures 14 by 18 inches and is in fine shape but for some slight foxing and some small tearing in the margins, none of which intrude on the image. Alvin Jewett Johnson(1827- 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. He was born into a poor family in Wallingford. Vermont and received only a basic public ... moreeducation. He got his first taste of the map business as a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published and date to the mid-1850s. But it was not until 1860 that his firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas. The first Johnson atlas maps were mostly reissues of earlier maps published by the J H Colton firm, and early on Johnson himself described his firm as the"Successors to J H Colton and Company" Following the outbreak of the American Civil War the Johnson and Browning firm moved their office from Richmond. Virginia to New York City and published two editions of the Johnson Atlas in 1860 and 1861. Sometime in 1861 Browning's portion of the firm was purchased by Benjamin P. Ward, whose name subsequently replaced Browning's on the imprint(this map features the Ward name) The Family Atlas went through roughly 27 years of publication. From 1860 to 1887, outliving Johnson himself who died in 1884. Johnson maps from the Family Atlas are notable for their unique borders, of which there are four different designs, the"strapwork borer" from 1860 to 1863

I dont know mush about the maps other that they were used at the us army command and general staff college. One of the overlays is dated 1987 so more likely all the maps are from 87. This maps are in really good shape must are in like new conditions. The maps are about 4' wide by 3' high i placed a pencil on one of the maps so the sice could be appreciated. The map stretches from the Caspian to the Red Sea and from Cyprus to the Persian Gulf. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic ... moreevents. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1570s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude in appearance. This antique colored engraving of a mountain pass in Turkey is attached to its original antique matting. But has been removed from the frame. The matting shows signs of its age and has some scuffs and stains. The print itself is in good antique condition although there appears to be some soiling and a small scuff in the lower margin as shown in the photo. The matted surface measures about 15 x 11.5 inches.
