Originally published 1861 this four sheet folded New York Newspaper is called, Lloyd’s Military Map and Gazetteer of the Southern States. Showing all the Railroads, their Stations& Distances as well as all the Counties, Towns, Villages, Harbors, Rivers and Forts. It is filled with Historical and Descriptive Sketch of all places of interest in the Southern States, but there also are many pro south stories in the defense of owning slaves. When you complete unfolded this newspaper you would see a 93 x 129 cm(36 5/8” by 50 ¾” hand colored map of the Southern States. Most of the examples I found in museums were published in 1861, just before the start of the War. Several of them were in poor condition. There is mention of an 1862 edition, but I only found one reference to an 1863 published map like the example we are listing tonight. Chinese Compass Pocket Transit Map Distance Measuring Leather Case Military?
This is a used Chinese compass. Pocket transit and map distance measuring device with a leather carry case with a belt loop. When the case is closed, the compass needle is lifted to protect the jeweled bearing during transport. The compass also features a gravity clinometer for measuring vertical angles. There is a small wheel on the side of the case which drives the map distance meter. The polished stainless steel mirror is in great shape-no scratches. The body of the case is cast in aluminum. Offering this collection of old compasses. There are 5 here including: The hunter pop open cased compass circa WWll made by Wittnauer in good working condition with some rust on the hands. It may be military but not stamped US. Also a german made Hoffritz double sided compass with a distance measurer for a map on the flip side that converts centimeters run on a map to kilometers on land. The hands on the compass side are rusty but functional. The little measuring wheel is brass. Cape to Cairo(Corrected) Air Route" linear map. 25 in. wide, extending over approximately 30 feet, issued in 4 sections, each bound separately in strong pictorial boards. Scale 1:1,000,000. The entire map is linen backed. The sections combine to cover the entire air route from Germiston Airport at Johannesburg, to Heliopolis Airport at Cairo, which substantially was that followed by Imperial Airways in the 1930s. The map was published in 1945 by the Director of Military Survey G.H.Q. Pretoria, South Africa, presumably before the end of World War II. It is ingeniously designed and folded. Enabling a navigator to open a double panel(16 in. x 13 in. at any point on the route, rest it rigidly on his knee and examine at close range, a distance of some 126 miles. A detailed reference key inside the front cover of each section, explains the ... moresymbols used to delineate the route from aerodrome to aerodrome, the location of each aerodrome, landing grounds, prohibited areas, air corridors, overhead high tension cables and magnetic course. The map covers the entire United States and is broken up into various military departments. Welcome to my auction. This auction is for a brown. I think it’s leather roll up case. I assume it is for maps or documents. It measures 16” long and 14” wide when laid flat. It is marked on one end but I can not make out what it says. It has a leather handle and a leather strap that goes around the body and fastens with a buckle. The one strap on the one side of the handle is rough and the buckle is tarnished. The entire case does show wear but displays nicely. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions prior to bidding. Map of Jefferson Proving Military Reservation
This is a geological map of the Jefferson Proving Grounds MilitaryReservation loacted in Jefferson Co. Indiana. The map is 4'9" long and is dated 1959-1980 edited 1986. The Proving Ground started up in1941 and operated until it was close by the Goverment in 1995. The Provng Ground was started durng WWII to preform production and post test of conventional ammunition and oher ordnance and to conduct test of propellant ammunition/ weapon systems. Around 500 Families were given 30 days to take their possessions and leave their propety so the proving ground could be built and start operation. The Air National Guard still use the firing range but a very large area of Apx. 51.000 acres has been turned into Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge which was create in 2000. In the early 1930's Old Tembers Lodge was built for Alexander Thomson ... moreand is still located within the fence of the Provng Ground Property. There are claims that the Johnson and Johnson paste wax formula was developed on the oak floors of Old Timbers great room although this can't be documented it can't be disproved either. With the Greeks and the British assaulting the positions of the Bulgarian First Army near Dojran Lake. The battle was part of World War I and took place in the Balkan Theatre. The battle ended with the Bulgarians repulsing all attacks, but then retreating. On the left, the British XII Corps made up of the 22nd and 26th Divisions, reinforced by the Greek Seres division was to attack the difficult Pip Ridge.
