This is an original engraved set of maps on a single sheet, published in the superb elephant folio atlas Grand Atlas Universel. Drawn by Adolphe Dufour and engraved by Dyonnet. Published in Paris by Le Vasseur for Maison Abel Pilon. The 3 maps show: Palestine at the time of Jesus Christ- The route followed by the Hebrews- The Tribes of Israel Additionally there is a plan of Jerusalem It measures approx 76cm x 56cm excluding margins. Vertical centrefold as issued. Very attractive original hand colouring. Overall condition is very good. A sharp and clear impression. There is some light mottled brown spotting. And some light browning along the centrefold. Also some marks here and there. The edges are bumped in places, and there is a tear in the bottom margin that just reaches the printed border. This beautiful large-scale map of"Palestine or The Holy Land" was produced by Geographer to the Queen of Scotland. Alexander Keith Johnston and published in 1882 in his"Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. Johnston apprenticed to James Kirkwood& Sons, Engravers in 1820. In 1826, he partnered with his brother William in W. A.K. Johnston. He died July 9th, 1871 in Yorkshire but the business continued under his name until the late 1890's. Geographer and publisher who dominated English cartography in the mid-1700's along with his fellow mapmakers, and sometime collaborators, Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin. Although he is best-known for his splendid'American Atlas' which was used by both sides during the War of Independence, much of his income was derived from providing smaller decorative country maps for publications such as Salmon's'Geography' This attractive map of Turkey in Asia is one of the examples from this publication. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic events. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of ... morea marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1570s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude in appearance. Sebastian Petri's solution was an elegant one- he revised Münster's maps as needed(keeping most of the master cosmographer's original layout and design) and had new wood blocks cut"in the copperplate style" complete with ornate calligraphy and charming decorative elements. Cartographically this map hails from the Nicholas Visscher map of 1650, but it does exhibit some modifications including completely revised topical imagery in the lower quadrants. Like Visscher's map, our map shows the course of the Israelites as they fled out of Egypt, across ... morethe Red Sea, and subsequently spent the next forty years wandering in the Sinai before migrating into the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River just north of the Dead Sea. Mt. Sinai, Mt. Horeb, Sodom, Gomorra, Jerusalem, and countless other importable Biblical locals are noted. This is a large 1903 Crams map of the Holy Land. It measures 14 1/2 X 22 inches. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. It may have a few handling flaws as to be expected in a map this age and large. Please enlarge upper scan for condition of map. Map was taken from the Cram's Modern Atlas which is near impossible to obtain. We take special care in shipping these maps as there are no replacements. Israel or the Holy Land, from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. Towns, rivers, mountains, islands and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and territorial boundaries are outlined in color. Indigenous tribes such as the Serde Arabs and Sark Arabs, among others, are identified. The map shows the administrative divisions of the Ottoman Empire which include the Pachalic of Gaza, Pachalic of Acre, Pachalic of Damascus, and part of the Pachalic of Tripoli. Hall prepared this map in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire whose influence, though rapidly declining, still held ... moresway over much of the Middle East. In 1832, Palestine was conquered by Muhammad Ali’s Egypt following the Egyptian-Ottoman War. British intervention returned control of Palestine to the Ottoman rulers in 1840 which lasted until World War I. Ancient as well as modern place names are noted. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ this type of border, it is possibly the earliest to use it on such a large scale. Both the choice to use steel plate engraving and the addition of the attractive keyboard boarder are evolutions of anti-forgery efforts. In the Mediterranean a fleet of ships is transporting cedar from Sidon to Jaffa for the construction of Solomon's Temple. Also in the Mediterranean, there is an illustration Jonah being swallowed by the whale. These are the only two decorative elements that are inherited directly from Visscher's map of 1650. The elaborate decorative engraving work in the lower quadrants of the map is the work of Stoopendaal, a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam during the late 17th and early 19th centuries. This map covers the Holy Land from the Mediteranean to just beyond the Jordan River. This map purports to illustrate the Holy Land as it appeared at the time of Jesus Christ; however, numerous elements from earlier periods have been inherited from Stoopendaal’s various source maps. These include a fleet of ships in the Mediterranean transporting cedar from Sidon to Jaffa for the construction of Solomon's Temple and, in ruin at the bottom of the Dead Sea, the corrupt cities ... moreof Sodom, Gammora, Seboim and Adama. This map is derived from Nicholas Visscher’s 1660 map of the same name, and though cartographically nearly identical, features updated decorative elements. These include scenes from the life and travels of Jesus along the bottom of the map. This map was published by the Keur family in their popular Keur Bible. As one of the Dutch“Staten” bibles published between 1637 and 1760, the Keur Bible contained five or six maps: Werlt Karte, Paradys, Perigrinations, Canaan, Ierusalem, Reysen Pauli, and sometimes Reyse der Kinderen Israels. Bibliorum intelligentiam exact aperiens Description: A fine 1633 old color example of Christian van Adrichom's map of the Holy Land. Israel, or Palestine drawn, published by Jodocus Hondius. Oriented to the East, this map covers the whole of the Holy Land on both sides of the Jordan River from the desert of Moab to the Mediterranean and from modern day Lebanon to Egypt's Nile Delta. The map is divided according to the Twelve Tribes of Israel while the portions of the map to the south of the Dead Sea show the Wandering of the Israelites in the Desert– a forty year episode from Exodus. Throughout tiny vignettes illustrate episodes from Biblical lore ranging from the encampment of the Israelites ... morein the desert to the parting of the Red Sea to the lost Dead Sea cities of Sodom, Gomorra, Schoim, and Adama. Fishing boats populate the Sea of Galilee and major roadways and other trade routes are noted included. The upper portions of the map are decorated with putti and an elaborate floral garland hanging suspended from the title. In the lower left quadrant Moses and Aaron discuss the tablets of the Law. Two distance scales contained within a strapwork border appear in the lower right. A further vignette, bottom center, illustrates Jonah and the Whale. This map was issued by Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius in the third volume of their influential atlas, Le Nouveau Theatre du Monde, published in 1639.
