The design is quite sturdy, with heavy, shouldered bands and thick bezel, and the ring is very handsome and solid in character. The ring is twice the weight of the ordinary ring of the era, very durable and solid. The"bezel" or center part of this ring depicts a stylized starburst design which though pagan in origin, was co-opted by the Christians and evolved into a stylized depiction known as a“Stellata Cross” In hand the engraving of the starburst, or“Stellata Cross” engraving is fairly clear and easy to discern. It’s a little more difficult to discern in these images, as the design is worn and pebbled to the point of being somewhat faint. However the engraved design is clear enough to be unambiguous and unmistakable. The starburst design was co-opted by the Christians over the period between the second and fourth centuries. Because the ruins are covered by the modern city, archaeology has barely touched the ancient city. A master engraver but not a cartographer. Pierre Mortier's maps are in fact close copies of earlier original works, in this case a historical map compiled in 1676 by the prominent French geographer Guillaume Sanson(1633-1703) for his atlas Cartes Générales ... morede la Géographie Anciennes et Nouvelles. A pioneer in the field of historical cartography, sought to present the region as it was constituted in the days of the Roman Republic and later Roman Empire which called for some extensive scholarship for a region rarely mapped in any detail. Vintage HAND MADE TAVAS KILIM Prayer RUG, Slit ANATOLIA Weaving, Made in Turkey
There is a label on this rug. Where most of the information is already to faint to be read, but it is possible to see that is a product of Turkey and that it was hand made, and also that is a Tavas type of rug. Please check the close-up of the label which, by the way, is attached to the rug with rough, old metal staples. The rug is colorful and beautiful. The dyes used are probably natural dyes. But our knowledge of kilim is not good enough to tell. It feels like a really old rug, maybe from the 1950's, we believe. It is not thick, but rather thin. It has a beautiful design. Because of the slit technique of the weaving. We are guessing this was made in the Anatolia tribal region of Turkey. The size makes us think this was originally a prayer rug. Good antique vintage Kurdish Van kilim from eastern Turkey/ Anatolia. All wool. Finely woven in two parts and joined. Beautiful abrashed indigo background with eight latch hook medallions. The field is covered with traditional talismanic motifs. Three color warps with original end finishes and braided fringe. A mix of natural and not natural dyes. Many small“I” motifs done in gold metal wrapped thread. Which may indicate this as a dowry piece. It looks like it was hardly, if ever, used.
