Is known more for his authorship of the five volume"Description de l'Univers' one of the earliest printed miniature, illustrated world history/geography books. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. 1646 Keere Map- The Turkish Empire' Pieter van den Keere was perhaps the finest map engraver of the late 1500's and early 1600's. His name can be found on beautiful miniature maps issued by Bertius. Blaeu and Jansson among others. He was the brother-in-law of his only real rival for the title of champion engraver, Jodocus Hondius and worked with him on many projects. One of his last efforts, issued in the year of his death, was a miniature world atlas of 20 maps derived from those of the great English mapmaker, John Speed. 1784 Bayly Map- A New Map of Turky in Asia John Bayly was an engraver who worked in London. England in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Much of his output was single cartographic items of larger size and he did little work for the atlas publishers of the day. However his one venture into mass map publishing was for John Harrison who published William Martyn's'The Geographical Magazine or a New, Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography' in 1784. This map of Turkey in Asia comes from the Geographical Magazine. It has very clear. Simple engraving and the oval title ignores the customary vignette, common to so many maps of the time. Ortelius based his cartography for the map in large part on his own earlier map of Asia. Which in turn drew on a 1561 map of Asia by Gastaldi. The map would certainly give the European reader pause as it showed the"Tyrannical Turkish Yoke" as Ortelius worded it in his commentary) spanning three continents and stretching as far as the outskirts of Vienna. Wonderfully decorative and one of the most sought-after of all Ortelius maps, this well-preserved ... moreuncoloured example is more than four centuries old and is a strong impression exhibiting a rich patina that will make for an elegant presentation if matted and framed. Many of the ornate strapwork cartouches used by Ortelius' engravers were taken from a series of ornament prints published in the 1560s by the brilliant architect. The New Great Atlas[Cedid atlas tercümesi] was the first Islamic world atlas to be based in the European style. Printed in Istanbul in the year 1803 by the Ottoman Military Engineering School[Tab'hane-yi Hümayun] and was bound with Mahmud Raif Efendis geographic study on the maps entitled Ucaletü'l-cografiyye. The maps themselves were based ... moreon William Fadens[1749-1836] plates for his General atlas. First printed in London, 1797. Mahmud Raif Efendi composed his eighty page commentary in French while the private secretary to the Ottomon ambassador in London. The commentary was then translated into Turkish. The atlas was part of Sultan Selim IIIs"Nizam-i cedid" or New order] Which was an attempt to incorporate European knowledge and administration in to the Ottoman system. The place names on the maps are transliterated into the Arabic script and all of the Christian symbols have been erased. Only fifty copies of the New Great Atlas were printed of which very few remain. Original Map Title The Piri Reis map 1513 Approximate Image Size 22 X 30 inches(irregular shape) Details"The Piri Reis map is a pre-modern world map compiled in 1513 from military intelligence by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis. Approximately one-third of the map survives; it shows the western coasts of Europe and North Africa and the coast of Brazil with reasonable accuracy. Various Atlantic islands including the Azores and Canary Islands are depicted. As is the mythical island of Antillia and possibly Japan. The historical importance of the map lies in its demonstration of the extent of exploration of the New World by approximately 1510, and ... morein its claim to have used Columbus's maps, otherwise lost, as a source. It used 10 Arabian sources, 4 Indian maps sourced from Portuguese and one map of Columbus. More recently it has been the focus of pseudohistoric claims for the premodern exploration of the Antarctic coast. The map is the extant western third of a world map drawn on gazelle skin parchment. The surviving portion primarily details the western coast of Africa and the eastern coast of South America. The map was signed by Piri Reis. An Ottoman-Turkish admiral, geographer and cartographer, and dated to the month of Muharram in the Islamic year 919 AH, equivalent to 1513 AD. It was presented to Ottoman Sultan Selim I in 1517. In the map's legend, Piri inscribed that the map was based on about twenty charts and mappae mundi. According to Piri, these maps included eight Ptolemaic maps constructed during the era of Alexander the Great, an Arabic map of India, four newly drawn Portuguese maps from Sindh, Pakistan and a map by Christopher Columbus of the western lands. Not to be confused with the far more common smaller 4to issue. This scarce oversize folio sheet map is very large by cartographic standards. With a myriad of details simply not possible to present on a smaller format map. Further. The details displayed are transitional[temporary] in nature given the rapid expansion around the world during this era. Variant details from other years of issue. An uncommon map only issued within a huge[and then] expensive large format 2 volume edtion atlas printed& distributed in but small numbers at a very large price. Printed on quality period paper which may show typical gentle signs of age. Perhaps some minor ... morelight spotting or foxing, but retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. An appealing. Uncommon and interesting map. In near Very Good or better antiquarian condition. Mostly clean overall, light minor age dustiness or small light surface wear, small spotting- please inspect enlargable photo closely, any noteworthy flaws to the printed surface area should be noticable within picture provided.
