Original Ottoman-Turkey-Turkish Medal for the War with Greece(Yunan Muharebesi Madalyasi) 1897 with original suspension/Silk ribbon and top bar. Circular silver medal. Pierced for suspension, the face with the tughra of Abdulhamid II encircled by a laurel wreath with a rose at the base; the reverse inscribed‘Greek War, Day- Sunday, 23rd of Zildake(11th month of the Hejira calendar) 1314’ 1897AD) on an old faded correct ribbon with silver bar. The War of 1897 between Greece and the Ottoman Empire lasted just 30 days. Initially, the cause was the landing of elements of the Greek army on Crete on 21 January 1897 in support of an uprising by the Greek population against Ottoman rule. The Great Powers intervened, making Crete an international protectorate. A Greek army under Prince Constantine then advanced into Ottoman Thessaly and Macedonia ... moreand another into Epirus. In the ensuing fighting the Greeks were outnumbered and forced to retreat. Again, the Great Powers intervened and the Sultan ordered a ceasefire on 20 May. A treaty was signed on 20 September under which Greece was obliged to pay compensation. The medal was awarded to Ottoman military who resisted the Greek incursions. The medal is now quite rare. This piece is mysterious. was this gorgeous woven top from a rug and cut down for the stool? Or was it made for this stool? It is very hard to tell because of the borders of the stool being so natural looking as if this primitive looking so soft woven top was made for this stool. Chicken/Egg. doesn't really matter because it is so lovely and very versatile. This could be used in a formal great room or a bedroom or the entertainment room of your house.
