India: One of the first maps to show India's true shape, Venice, 1561
This is the second. Quarto-sized version of the ground-breaking map of India that Gastaldi drew for Nicolo Bascarini's pocket-sized, octavo atlas published in 1548. This had been the first to genuinely show what India looked like, if you tried to sail around it. Prior to that, even so called"Nova Tabulae" inserted at the end of Ptolemy's"Geographa" of maps first conceived in classical times(2nd century AD, in fact) did not really capture India's true length! This one, was the"real thing" Now. For the 1561 atlas, Gastaldi was working for the publishing firm of the Valgrisi brothers, and the larger size gave him scope- which he couldn't resist- for embellishment. So in addition to much more clearly delineated towns we are treated to a couple of interesting looking ships- a galley, and what looks ... morelike an old fashioned caravel that might have served Colombus in 1492. There's also a large, cheerful fish. Giacomo Gastaldi was the greatest Italian cartographer of the 16th century. Who- for his skills- was awarded the title"Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice" And the Valgrisi atlas, like Bascarini's in 1548, also printed the text in Italian(see pics 4 and 5 above) rather than the classical Latin used for earlier editions of the"Geographa" Among place names which can now be seen much more clearly are provinces such as Orissa, Cambay, Goa, the Deccan, Bengal, with cities and towns(though not necessarily in the right places) such as Delhi, Cochin, Canonor, not to mention Calecut, which lends its name to the title, and Cape Comorin. Ceylon is not left out. Here are are indicated Mahe and Trincomalee. As was his wont, Gastaldi leaves his signature initial"G" in each of the map's four corners. This marvellous map measures 300 x 210 mm. Nearly twice the size of the 1548 map. Because it is currently in a frame, behind glass" the photos have a slightly fuzzy appearance. This will be evident in the scanned images. Which are high quality and unedited. The maps are untrimmed and are suitable for framing. Remarks The quality of these maps surpasses that of most. If not all, its American-produced contemporaries. These maps are much nicer than any of the Rand McNally or Cram's ... moreAtlas editions I've seen. For the 55 maps covering U.S. states. Mexico and the Caribbean by George Frederic Lotter. The map features inserts of Baffin and Hudson's Bay, the northern Gulf of California, a seven scales of distance table, and a decorative cartouche depicting British merchants at a port with a ship in the background being loaded with cargo by slaves. Throughout this map is an immense amount of geographical and historical information including locations of indian tribes, expedition routes and discoveries, beaver hunting lands, forts and the dates they were established, tracts of land labeled as unknown, and false islands in Lake superior as well as a few geographical features once thought to exist deemed imaginary. Bonne is perhaps best known today for his early maps of the nascent United States which was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War when this map was published- indeed Bonne's maps of the period are among the first to name the"Ḗtats-Unis" as such. Bradley, 415 Dearborn Street, Chicago. This is a Grand New Census and World's Fair Edition. Maps are full color- very attractive and interesting! This map has India(scale of 1 inch equals about 155 miles) on one side and a map of Egypt, Arabia, Upper Nubia and Abyssinia(scale of 1 inch equals about 132 miles) on the flip side. Pages are large, being either 14 1/2" x 10 3/4" or 11 5/8 x 14 1/2" with viewing area being approximately 12” x 9” a little more or a little less) on most ... moreof the maps. Each map has at least one edge that is not 100% razor straight where it was taken out of the binding mounted in the atlas. The larger pages have tiny perforations(see picture) along the binding edge where it was bound with cord. All pages are slightly yellowed from age but map colors are bright and clear. Maps may have small dog-eared corners or tiny pieces of corners missing. See individual pictures. This map has some very light smudges in the margins. Every map has an atlas page number in one margin. What appears to be a lighter area on the map is from camera flash. Five 1890 Dated Maps of India - B12
Offered here are five 1890 dated maps of India. Map one shows India. Physical and Political, Map two shows Western India, Map three show Eastern India, Map four shows Southern India and Map five shows Further India. The actual map measures approximately 11.5 by 26 inches and they were removed from the Library Reference Atlas of the World by John Bartholomew. Both maps are in good condition though there is crease down the center where the map was bound into the book. The white streak in some of my photos is the reflection from my flash. Can't seem to get rid of it. I have had some of these maps professional framed and they look great. If you are not satisfied, I will refund your money less shipping. STANFORD'S PORTABLE MAP OF INDIA London: Edward Stanford- July 1st. 1869 2x sheets. Each 27½" x 17" These are genuine antique maps. Not a reproductions. As such, some age toning or signs of handling are to be expected. Any significant flaws or defects beyond this are noted below. Two hand coloured sheets. Each folded down centre. Very good condition. Slightly tanned around edges. A few light dusty marks, otherwise both sheets are clean and bright, no foxing. Both sheets have been trimmed to form tabbed side edges(presumed to be original) ½" to 1" closed tears into borders from these tabs. Tears to edges at top and bottom of folds on both sheets. But these do not extend beyond margins. Southern sheet also slightly chipped down side edges, and has been trimmed along top edge. Lots of details on these maps. See the closeups for examples. One corner of the Birds-Eye-View map has foxing/folds. + + + There is some usual darkening around the edges of the pages. But generally in good condition for paper that is 121 years old! Also. The margin where the page was bound in the book has staple holes and staining from rust. It is outside the map area and still good for framing. All of my maps are originals. I do not destroy good books. But rescue ... morepages from damaged and ruined atlases. I mail maps rolled up in a tube for protection. Which I have found it to be the most reliable way for the map to arrive without damage. Antique maps of India and China from an atlas published in the late 19th Century. This is an original page. Not a copy or reprint. Because the maps are printed back to back, only one side can be displayed. Condition: Good. Aging around the margins. Which just adds to the appeal of the old map. The paper is fairly fragile, so map page will need to be protected from less than careful handling. Note: the page was just a bit too big for the scanner, so part of the margin area is not shown. Some edge wear and small tears that are well clear of the map and would be covered with a frame.The map was printed a bit crooked(as was common in the 19th century printing) but this will not show when it is framed. These are 1931 maps of India. They are from a scarce Cram's Atlas. The maps measure 11.25 X 15 inches. They are in near mint condition showing only minor handling. Buyer will get a printed out page size copy of the index page. This is superior to any"Certificate of Authenticity" which are normally printed out on the sellers own computer. We send this to prove map was extracted from this extremely rare atlas and to help with insurance appraisals as the map will surely increase in value. There are a few reasons this map is rare. And more difficult to obtain than a Cram's map of the late 1800's. In 1931 the United States and the World was in a catastrophic depression. Thus Cram's did not print as many, and very few people had the money to buy this atlas. This group of maps show places in India. I wonder if they were produced for the British during their military campaigns. They are a combination of sizes. The largest measuring approx 20 inches by 20 inches. Some panorama views measure 20 inches by 9 inches, others smaller and of varying sizes. One of the maps is quite torn. Most of the maps date from the 1860s. Several are printed by Pharoah& Co. Madras. One of the maps says it is a'Plan of attack of the French. Volumes 1 and 3 each have maps with them. Volume 1 has a map of India which was printed in 1817 and volume 3 has a map of Persia also printed in 1817.The 3 books are all complete no missing pages and are in good condition.
