An attractive general map. Published in the quarto edition of Edward Stanford’s‘London Atlas of Universal Geography’ Printed on a single page the sheet measures approx 30cm x 37cm. Very good condition. The printed area is clean and fresh. Margins have some minor handling soiling. A few specks and are a little darkened towards the edges. Left edge a little creased where originally bound. Verso blank and clean. I’ll post it rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube. This is an 1871 engraved map of Turkey in Asia. Persia, Arabia, Egypt and the Nile Countries. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Has nice circular inset of Paris. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Description: A scarce 1776 map of the Persian Gulf by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville. Essentially a nautical chart. This map covers from Basrah to the Straits of Hormuz. D'Anville prepared this map in 1758 to illustrate a lecture presented to the Paris Academie des Belles-Lettres regarding his speculations on the then little known geography of the Persian Gulf. Although the southwestern part of the Gulf is poorly mapped and little known, various Gulf cities are identified including Julfar(Ras al-Kahaimah) Mekehoan, Kalba, and Ras-ol Lima. The Qatar Peninsula is entirely absent, but the island of Bahrain is noted, though misaligned. The Saudi ... morecity of Qatif(el Katif) is however clearly identified. D'Anville was able to draw from Persian sources to map the northeastern shore of the Gulf and there the cartography is notably superior. Description: An extremely uncommon 1754 map of Syria by Alexander Drummond. Most likely the earliest scientifically surveyed map of the interior of northern Syria. Oriented to the south. The map is roughly centered on Aleppo, where Drummond was stationed as British Consul. It extends over the areas the Drummond traveled and personally surveyed: westward to the Bay of Antioch(near modern day Hatay, Turkey) and east as far as the Euphrates River, an again north to the Sinus Issicus(modern day Gulf of Iskenderun) Inland the map extends further north to a city identified as Antaib, also known as Antiochia Penes Tarum, an ancient Roman city most likely corresponding to modern day Gaziantep or Antep, on ... morethe Turkey-Syria border. Drummond's map is remarkable in that he copies nothing from earlier works, taking great pains to map only those sites he has actually personally experienced and surveyed. Though some of his distances are skewed, Drummond's map represents a significant cartographic leap forward in the modern mapping of Syria. Despite the fact that Drummond's focus is the ruins of antiquity, his place names and location references are particularly thorough and important. This includes some of the earliest references to various Syrian villages, fortresses, churches, mills, roadways, and terrain. Drummond had a personal interest in Syrian Christianity and the detail with which he notes various churches throughout is of exceptional interest. The curious cartouche, in the upper left quadrant depicts a turbaned spear wielding slaver, possibly an Ottoman, and to his right, a depressed looking, scantily clad, chained slave. Drummond was a harsh critic of Ottoman rule and the message of the cartouche is clear, the slaver is the Ottoman Empire and the slave the oppressed people of Syria. Persia, and Arabia by the French cartographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville. Centered on Persia, this map covers from Istanbul to eastern India and Tibet, and from the Black Sea to the Maldives. It offers excellent coverage of the central Asian portions of the Silk Route naming the centers of Samarkand, Bukhara, Lop Nor, and others. At the bottom center there is a large decorative title cartouche including stylized Christian, Muslim Zoroastrian, and Buddhist elements. As ... morethis map was being prepared, the eastern portions including Turkey, Arabia, and most of the modern day Middle east, were under the waning hegemony of the Ottoman empire. In Arabia, the first'Saudi State' had already been established in 1744 and, though owing nominal allegiance to Istanbul, dominated much of the central Arabian Peninsula. The presumably more valuable costal lands and river valleys of Mesopotamia(modern day Iraq) remained under direct Ottoman suzerainty. Persia at this time was itself experiencing the waning years of the short lived Zand Dyansty who ruled from the capital city of Isfahan- identified here. Within 50 years of this maps issue, in 1794, Aga Muhammad Khan would overthrow Loft Ali Khan, last Shah of the Zand Dynasty, and relocate the capital to the new city of Terhan. The subsequent era, the Qajar Dynasty, witnessed numerous military conflicts with the rising powers of Imperial Russia and the loss of much of Persia's territory. India meanwhile was quickly falling under the control of the British East India Company who, from a few coastal outposts, were rapidly asserting their authority over most of the subcontinent, leaving only the Sultana
