This map, from Keur's important Dutch Bible of 1687, is oriented to west and covers from the Nile Delta, Cairo and Memphis, Egypt, across the Red Sea and along the Mediterranean Coast as far north as Sidon and Tyre(Lebanon) and further inland, Palmyra. Cartographically this map hails from the Nicholas Visscher map of 1650, but it does exhibit some modifications including completely revised topical imagery in the lower quadrants. Like Visscher's map, our map shows the course of the Israelites as they fled out of Egypt, across ... morethe Red Sea, and subsequently spent the next forty years wandering in the Sinai before migrating into the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River just north of the Dead Sea. Mt. Sinai, Mt. Horeb, Sodom, Gomorra, Jerusalem, and countless other importable Biblical locals are noted. In the Mediterranean a fleet of ships is transporting cedar from Sidon to Jaffa for the construction of Solomon's Temple. Also in the Mediterranean, there is an illustration Jonah being swallowed by the whale. These are the only two decorative elements that are inherited directly from Visscher's map of 1650. The elaborate decorative engraving work in the lower quadrants of the map is the work of Stoopendaal, a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam during the late 17th and early 19th centuries. Stoopendaal's elaborate illustrations depicts various scenes from Exodus including Moses receiving the Tables of Law, the encampments of the Israelites, Moses producing water from a stone, etc. This map was issued in many states by various publishers related to the Keur firm. The whole of this map is beautifully engraved in the minimalist English style pioneered in the early part of the 19th century. Relief is shown by hachure with towns, caravan routes, cities, and major topographical features identified. Turcici Imperi Imago 47.5 cm x 34 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 43 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved 1606, printed 1619 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the beautifully engraved map of Turkey and environs(Van der Krogt 8110:1A) compiled by(1563-1612) from the 1619 French edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Hondius based the map on the 1570"Natoliae" map of Abraham Ortelius. Which in turn was based on a map issued in 1564 by the Piedmontese geographer Giacomo Gastaldi. Hondius purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as a foundation he added maps of his own such as this classic map which was introduced to the atlas in 1606. A practice later continued by his son Henricus Hondius and his brother ... morein law Jan Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. A much sought-after map, t his exceptionally well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very finest calibre and will make a superb presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with a view of Constantinopple and environs where an elegant dhow with an Ottoman banner sails the Black Sea. Several trademark engraving styles employed by Jodocus Hondius are present on the map such as the moiré pattern for water. Dense horizontal lines for littoral waters and of course flamboyant calligraphy as in the presentation of Bulgaria seen below: A fine sea monster surfaces near Cyprus: Handsome title cartouche with strapwork frame: To get a sense of map detail. The map measures 14 x 17 inches in size and is in lovely condition. With its reverse side blank. It has a short 1-inch edge tear in its upper blank margin, but this is scarcely noticeable, and doesn't intrude at all into the image. The map is drawn to a scale of about 16 miles to the inch. Palestine's regions are highlighted in appealing pale contrasting watercolors. Numerous place names are shown. There he studied under Konrad Pelikan, who was to have great influence over the young man in the next five years. Pelikan was a teacher of Hebrew, Greek, mathematics and cosmography. Evidently, Munster was a gifted pupil, but his earliest prowess is demonstrated in his mastery of language compiling, among a wide range of books, a Hebrew-Latin dictionary, and translating a large number of books.
