An Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers; 2004) Her power was rivaled only by her beauty. Her face has become one of the most recognizable images in the world. She was an independent woman and thinker centuries before her time. But who was Egypt's Queen Nefertiti? After years of intense research. Dr. Joann Fletcher has answered the questions countless researchers before her could not. While studying Egyptian royal wigs, she read a brief mention of an unidentified and mummified body, discovered long ago and believed to belong to an Egyptian of little importance. This body happened to have a wig, which Dr. Fletcher knew was a clear sign of power. After examining the hairpiece and the woman to which it belonged, to the astonishment of her colleagues she identified this body as the missing remains of Queen Nefertiti. The search for Nefertiti had ended. She had been found. But the questions were just beginning. Nefertiti first rose to prominence in Egyptology in 1912. When a three-thousand-year-old bust of the queen was unearthed and quickly became a recognizable artifact around the world. But pieces of Nefertiti's life remained missing. The world had seen what she looked like, but few knew about her place in history. Virtually nothing is recorded about Nefertiti's ea

Publisher: Penguin Books; 1978) The acknowledged master of Greek comedy. Aristophanes brilliantly combines serious political satire with bawdiness, pyrotechnical bombast with delicate lyrics. Aristophanes(447-385 B.C. a contemporary of Socrates, was the last and greatest of the old Attic Comedians. Only eleven of his plays survive, and this volume contains five. Included in this collect are"The Birds" the most graceful of his plays. Also"The Knights" his venomous satire on the behavior of Cleon, one of the most famous of Athenian demagogues. It has, in its own way, plenty of topical and satirical content; in particular as the city of Cuckooville begins to take shape, it proves in many ways to be a replica of Athens, and is soon visited by many of the less desirable elements of the Athenian population. But satire is kept firmly subordinate to fantasy; and as fantasy Birds h

The Pyramids of Egypt by I.E.S. Edwards. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 240 pages. Publisher: The Viking Press; 1972) The eerie grandeur of the ... morepyramids. Standing solid and enormous in the desert west of the Nile, has caused people to marvel for thousands of years. In this book, now newly updated to include recent discoveries, Dr. Edwards offers us the definitive work on these gigantic tombs. Dr. Edwards draws both on his own original research as well as upon the work of the many archaeologists who have dug in Egypt. Surveying a thousand years of pyramid building, he charts the rise and decline of the pyramids as funerary monuments. From the mastabas of the first and second dynasties and the step pyramids. To the archaistic and backward looking efforts of the Middle Kingdom. He also discusses in detail the famous group at Giza. His final chapter, dealing with their construction and purpose, puts the pyramids into the perspective of ancient Egyptian society. For this revised edition he provides a radical new explanation of the evolution of the Great Pyramid. Illustrated with sixty-six black-and-white photographs as well as numerous diagrams and plans, The Pyramids of Egypt” remains a classic work of Egyptology. CONDITION: NEW. Inc; 1999) Throughout the ancient world the Egyptians were famous for their scents and perfumes. The country was considered the most suitable for the manufacture of such commodities. As the distillation of alcohol was not known until the fourth century BC the scents were extracted by steeping plants. Flowers or splinters of fragrant wood in oil to obtain essential oil, which would then be added to other oils or fat. The materials were placed in a piece of cloth which was wrung until the last drop of fragrance had been retrieved. Alternatively they were boiled with oil and water and the oil skimmed off. As for the oils. There was a wide choice, the most commonly used being moringa, balanos, castor oil, linseed, sesame, safflower, and, to some extent, almond and olive. According to Theophrastus, who made a thorough study of fragrant substances in an essay entitled concerning odors, balanos was the least viscous and by far the most suitable oil, followed by fresh raw olive oil and almond oil.
