DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 288 pages. Publisher: Facts On File. Inc; 1996) ISBN: 0816030057. List Price $44.00] Long overshadowed by Greek mythology. Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. Dictionary of Roman Religion" answers questions, makes connections, and sets Roman religion in its full context as no other source does. The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

RECENT FEEDBACK* Regarding a resent bad and undeserved feedback I received. I sold this buyer a table which unfortunately arrived with a damaged leg. The buyer tried to extort a lot of money out of me for repairs and gas money. I refunded her purchase in full with the condition she would return the package. She agreed and entered a false tracking number to show she was returning the package. I send UPS out to pick up the package and return it at my expense. She would only leave the empty box for UPS to pick up because"all I ask for was the package" Also she felt the need to give a harsh language feedback which brings me to the point of this message. I would like to apologize to my customers who have to read such harsh words printed to my sight. I tried to have it removed because of the content and language but eBay's standards and policy considers the speech and the way it is delivered appropriate. I do not for there are better ways of saying the same thing she said when in a public forum. Please review all my feedback and make an informed decision. My track record of promptness. Fairness and reliability is well documented on eBay. Shipping is

Achilles and Ajax - Exekias - Ancient Greek Amphora Vase- Vatican Museum Replica
ACHILLES& AJAX- EXEKIAS This item is an identical reproduction of the museum original(Vatican Museum) in same size and dimensions. It depicts Achilles and Ajax. Both identified by their names added in the genitive. They are sitting across from each other, looking at a block situated between them. The board game they are playing, which might be compared to a backgammon or checkers variant, was played with a die. According to the words written next to the two players, Achilles proclaims he has thrown a four, while Ajax a three. Although the two of them are pictured playing, they are clearly depicted as being on duty, wearing their body-armour and holding their spears. The rest of their weapons are situated in close proximity, suggesting that they might head back into battle any moment. Apart from the selection of this very intimate, relaxed ... morescene as a symbol for the Trojan War, this vase-painting also showcases the talent of Exekias as an artist: the figures of both Achilles and Ajax are decorated with fine incised details, showing almost every hair. The colors are very simple, natural pigments that could have easily been found in nature and utilized by the Ancient Greeks. It was Hand made in Greece, height is 11.8 inches. Our clay items are Hand painted and not fastly made, nor are they cheaply made of substitute materials such as resin. Olbia and other Greek colonies along the north coast of the Black Sea in the 5th century B.C. The site of the Greek colony covers the area of fifty hectares and its fortifications form an isosceles triangle about a mile long and half a mile wide. The upper town was a main residential quarter, composed of square blocks and centered on the agora. The town was ringed by a defensive stone wall with towers. There is evidence that the town itself was laid out over a grid plan from the 6th century- one of the first after the town of Smyrna. By the later period of settlement. The city also included an acropolis and, from the 6th century B.C. a religious sanctuary. In the early 5th century, a temple to Apollo Delphinios was also built on the site. The first evidence of Greek settlement at the site comes from Berezan Island where pottery has been found dating from the late 7th century. A stamped Greek terracotta Amphora handle, Rhodes, ca 3rd - 2nd century BC
A stamped Greek Amphora handle. Rhodes, ca 3rd- 2nd century BC Of fired terracotta. With stamped impression positioned at the top of the handle, circular in form stating merchant name and featuring the central motif of a rose- symbol of Rhodes. In Greece. Manufacturing of commercial amphorae began in the 8th century B.C. and the systematic stamping of amphorae began at the end of the 5th century B.C. Stamping probably started because of the wine quality standards demanded by Athens during this time but only the amphorae used for transportation were stamped. A series of Rhodian stamps started to appear in the 4th century B.C. and lasted until the 1st century B.C. As in other city governments. The manufacturers from Rhodes had their own symbols, namely, the rose pattern signifying the city(such as this example) the sun God Helios or the name ... moreof a month from the Rhodian calendar. Generally stamped before firing, these stamps were further used as capacity documents stating the weight for harbour taxes, the merchant and customers, and the manufacturing/filling date according to the Rhodes calendar. The Rhodian amphora stamps could also show the route of exportation from the mainland to the various colonies and settlements in the Mediterranean. Condition: Fragment originally from a transportation amphora. The handle itself is intact with very fine stamped impression. Custom mounted. 1,700 year old Greek Amphora. Partial
Please note.the Postage and handling is only an estimate. I will insert the correct amount as soon as I can. This Greek Amphora was given to me in 1983 along with three other partial amphoras and other antiquitities. This particular one is about 1.700 years old and was used in the seas traversing Greece to Spain. I took them to the university archaeology department and asked them to please date them for me because I didn't know date or materials used. It is made of sand and a kind of resin that held the mold together. Amphoras held things like olive oil and wine. On board ships there were bench type wooden planks with holes in them. These holes were where amphoras were held since they had a pointed bottom. Ships often wrecked or they were broken in marketplaces. I gave the other amphoras to the university. I had this one displayed on ... morethe floor for three decades. I moved and no longer have a place for displaying this regal relic of the past. I always wanted to have a stand made of bronze. Kind of like prongs holding a diamond. Maybe you will have one made. Thank you for reading this far! Enjoy this beautiful work of art.
Ulysses Giving Son Achilles Arms- Greek Amphora Vase- Museum Replica- 400BC
ULYSSES GIVING THE ARMS OF ACHILLES TO HIS SON NEOPTEMOMOS. Painted on a kylix by the Douris-painter about 400BC Now in Vienna museum. Hand made in Greece- signed(see photos) Douris active:500 B.C. 460 B.C. Athens vase-painter; potter Greek One of the most prolific vase-painters known. Douris worked as a vase-painter and occasionally as a potter in Athens in the early 400s B.C. He is known from almost forty signed vases, two of which he also potted. Altogether, almost three hundred vases have been attributed to him. Given that scholars estimate a less than 0.5% survival rate for Greek vases, Douris may have decorated about 78,000 vases in his career. Douris primarily decorated red-figure cups. But he also painted a few vessels of other forms and in other techniques, including white-ground. His scenes are about evenly divided between mythology ... moreand depictions of everyday life. He worked with a number of potters, including Kleophrades and Euphronios, but he seems to have had a regular collaboration with Python. Onesimos depicted a cup signed by Douris on one of his vases, and there is even an ancient forgery of Douris's signature. These unusual references attest to Douris's significant influence among contemporary vase-painters. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%600d72f%2B%3F0%3C%3E-149fb61d801-0x105-

Ancient Greek Hellenistic amphora pottery handles inscription Jerusalem & Rhodes
AT Auction is a LOT of two(2) fragmented pottery handles that came off of large wine amphorae jugs used to transport wine and other commodities aboard ships throughout the ancient Mediterranean. They date from the Hellenistic Age(circa 300-100 B.C. when the Greeks dominated much of the ancient world. One of them bears what appears to be Hebrew letters around a motif; I was told by a knowledgeable person that it references Jerusalem. The other handle has a partial Greek inscription as well as a rose flower motif and is from the island of Rhodes(thus the word"rose" I personally acquired both of these amphorae handles in Jordan. A ruler in inches in the photos shows the scale. Authentic ancient inscriptions for a low starting bid. Domestic buyer pays $5 shipping. Thanks for your interest in my auctions.
