A VERY FINE ATTIC LEKYTHOS WITH BLACK PAINTED BODY
A VERY FINE ATTIC LEKYTHOS WITH BLACK PAINTED BODY A very fine Attic pottery lekythos of the cylindrical type. These elegant vessels were first seen in the latter part of the sixth century BC and would predominate as the main type of lekythos during the fifth century. An intact. Museum grade example with a black painted body and ray decoration around the shoulder. Some acceptable chips and patches of wear as seen in the photographs. BACKGROUND: A lekythos(plural lekythoi) was a type of Greek pottery used to hold oil or perfume. Especially during religious ceremonies. Cylindrical lekythoi were often decorated with polychrome figures. Fragments and X-rays reveal that some of the taller examples had a small inner chamber which limited the amount of fluid that could be held. Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Lekythos Ritual Drinking Scene - 350 BC
An ancient Greek red figure lekythos(oil flask) vessel with beautiful painted decoration of a festival scene. Dating to around 350– 300 BC. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The painted decoration depicts a youth shown nude, wearing only a ring of charms from his shoulder, kneeling and raising a ritual wine cup( skyphos) Swirling tendrils border the scene. The shape. Style and subject of this beautiful vessel reflect strong Attic influence. Attic wares with scenes of children have long been thought to have been connected with the Anthesteria celebration, an Athenian festival held in late February in honour of Dionysus. The Anthesteria was an important festival to celebrate the maturing of the wine, which was opened on the first day ... moreand then consumed during various rituals. Amongst these was a drinking contest organised for the young boys, adorned with charms(as shown on this vessel) who drank from small jugs specially presented to them for the occasion. Though we are presented with a scene redolent with the vibrancy of ancient Greek life. It is poignant that lekythos vessels such as this piece were used to anoint the dead prior to burial and are often found in funerary contexts. As such. This vessel and the scene it depicts have a somewhat haunting presence, reflecting both the joys and fleeting nature of life itself. Height: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Ancient Greek Attic Black Figure Pottery Lekythos Calydonian Boar Scene - 450 BC
A beautiful ancient Greek Attic black figure Lekythos. Dating to approximately 450- 420 BC. Dating to the golden age of the Athenian civilisation, this stunning piece depicts one of the most popular myths of the ancient Greek world. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a disc base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The piece is decorated with a dramatic scene; a powerful boar is confronted by two soldiers on horseback, positioned either side as they hurl spears at the beast, a third figure on foot bends down to wrestle with the frantic animal. The shoulder of the vessel decorated with exuberant rays and dots. It is likely this vivid scene depicts the hunt of the Calydonian Boar. One of the monsters of Greek mythology that had to be overcome by heroes of the Olympian Age. Sent by Artemis ... moreto ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia because its king failed to honour her in his rites to the gods, the boar was killed in the Calydonian Hunt, in which many heroes took part. Like the quest for the Golden Fleece or the Trojan War that took place the following generation, the Calydonian Hunt is one of the most prominent of the Greek myths, and offered a natural subject for ancient artists. The piece is accompanied by a Thermoluminescence certificate from Oxford Authentication. Attesting to the authenticity of the piece, Oxford Authentication are the world leaders in TL testing, and are used by museums and auction houses throughout the world. Height: 5 ¼ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired in the early 20th century. Previously with Ancient and Oriental, London. Ancient Greek Attic Black Figure Pottery Lekythos - 490 BC
An ancient Greek Attic black-figure lekythos. Dating to around 490 BC. A joyous scene decorates the body of this elegant black-figure lekythos(oil flask) We see a procession. Perhaps Dionysiac in nature, with a male figure leading the way, followed by a female musician playing the aulos, a bearded man(possibly Dionysos) carrying a rhyton and another female behind. The form of the vessel itself is delicate. The piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth, the shoulders decorated with a black starburst motif. With a series of pseudo or"nonsense" inscriptions running up alongside each figure. This wonderful lekythos offers us a snapshot of life in ancient Greece. Intricate detail is substituted for a true sense of energy and vitality, and the piece is all the richer ... morefor it. Up until recently it was believed that the“nonsense” inscriptions(meaningless strings of Greek letters) that feature on many Attic ceramics such as this were simply gibberish, the result of illiteracy on the part of the painter. However, have shown that many are in fact Greek attempts at re-creating the sounds of foreign names and words. Forming the earliest attestations of many“barbarian” languages. Height: 6 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Acquired from Herbert A. Cahn, Kunst der Antike, Basel, 4th May 1990.
