Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. Rome engaged Carthage in three wars(the“Punic Wars” In fact father of the great Carthaginian General Hannibal was not only himself one of Carthage’s most famous generals, he was also a precious metals merchant. The Romans virtually deforested the entire country of Spain making charcoal to smelt silver and gold. When the silver in Spain began to play out, in 55BC Rome’s Julius Caesar invaded Britain, in part to acquire the rich silver deposits there. The Romans were the first to mass-produce coinage on a monumental scale, the first truly monetized society. Between 100 and 400AD the Romans produced billions of silver and bronze coins. At the height of the Empire. There were over 400 mints producing coinage throughout the empire. Silver was also fashioned into Greek-style jewelry. Silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Many historians have argued that it was the possession and exploitation of the Laurium mines by the Athenians that allowed them to become the most powerful city state in Greece. At the time these mines started producing prodigious amounts of silver, the price of silver in ancient Egypt was pegged at half that of gold. Enough silver was mined and refined at Laurium(and sold to Egypt) to finance the expansion of Athens as a trading and naval power. Estimates are that Laurium produced 160 million ounces of silver, worth six billion dollars today(when silver is by comparison to gold relatively cheap and abundant) As the production of silver from the Laurium mines ultimately diminished. Greek silver production shifted to mines in Macedonia. Celebrating that heritage, here’s a gorgeous, high quality sterling silver semi-custom sterling silver ring. Measurements: Length: 21mm. Breadth: 18mm. Weight: 2.61 grams. DETAILS: At many points in the ancient world. Estimates are that Laurium produced 160 million ounces of silver, worth six billion dollars today(when silver is by comparison to gold relatively cheap and abundant) As the production of silver from the Laurium mines ultimately diminished, Greek silver production shifted to mines in Macedonia. In celebration of that heritage here is a pair of gorgeous. Solid sterling silver designer earrings. I picked these up at a trade show recently as samples for a fraction of their retail value, and am passing the savings. These are very stylish, high-quality earrings produced in the USA from solid sterling silver(not cheap electroplated base metal) I’m not permitted to reveal the name of the fashion label these are intended to carry, but they’re exclusive, high-end earrings. I have only a few pair, so if you like the style, don’t procrastinate, they’ll be gone, and I have no ability to restock them! HISTORY OF SILVER: After gold. It was well struck both front and back on an oversized planchet. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. It is without a doubt a superior strike, considerably larger and heavier than the typical specimen of the era. The obverse of the coin depicts Roman Emperor Philip I, draped and with radiate crown; and the legend“IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS AVG” M IVL PHILIPPVS” refers to the Emperor’s name. Marcus Julius Philippis.
