Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. Completely intact, moderate wear, moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A substantial. Well constructed Roman bronze ring with very elegant and bold features. The ring sports a very large serrated bezel. Given the extent of the wear evidenced, it is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. If you look beneath the stone you might notice that even the serrated edges of the bezel are worn smooth at both sides. It is only where the serrated edges were“protected” by the wearer’s finger that they are almost entirely intact, but where the edges were exposed and unprotected by the wearers fingers, they show substantial wear. The ring seems to have been originally crafted with the intent to hold a gemstone. The bezel was flat and undecorated except that there was a recessed center panel and the surface was intentionally roughened or textured. As if to better hold an adhesive between the bezel and the gemstone. The Romans had a number of different adhesives they used, some of the most common being resin and bitumen. However the ring was not re

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

Ancient Etruscan Pottery Terracotta Votive Head of a Youth - 400 BC
An Ancient Etruscan terracotta votive head of a youth. Dating to approximately 400 B.C. The young male is shown with closely cropped hair. Showing typical archaic features, with almond-shaped eyes, slim nose and pursed lips. The hair faintly incised, with a firing hole at the top-back. This expressive piece was likely made as a stand-alone object for votive purposes. Votives such as this were dedicated in ancient times to a God. In thanks for, or in anticipation of, a favor. They would have been placed in local shrines and likely were commissioned and made by craftsmen on the same site. The most famous votives are probably those discovered at the Asklepion in Corinth. Height: 7 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good condition. Small area of nose restored. Otherwise intact. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Previously with Faustus antiquities, ... more1994, also previously part of the Whitbeck collection, inventory no.19. RARE ANCIENT ETRUSCAN PURE GOLD ROUNDEL JEWELRY PIECE CIRCA 700 BC- NO RESERVE! This fresh to the market find comes from the estate of the a well-heeled Main Line Philadelphia family that collected this incredible artifact on a"Grand Tour" in the 1930's. Nearly pure gold. This work is of the Syro-Phoenecian influence of the Orientalizing Era circa 700 BC. This incredible artifact was well cared for and is presented on a custom made Museum Mount. In itself a very costly item. These type of artifacts hardly come to market, and when they do- they are usually in major auction houses. Here's your chance to acquire an incredible piece of important ancient gold jewelry without the very costly buyer's premiums of major auction houses! 44.5mm Diameter Custom Museum Mount 4" About Etruscan Jewelry during the Orientalizing ... moreEra( Wikipedia) Etruscan gold jewelry especially flourished during the Orientalizing period due to the very affluent trading system which had evolved during this time. The Etruscans did not invent their decorative techniques. Indeed. The Mediterranean influences had brought such techniques as granulation. Syro-Phoenician jewelers settled in southern Etruria and taught local apprentices the art of granulation and filigree. These techniques first developed in the South of Etruria. It consisted of working designs onto a surface with tiny granules of gold. Care had to be taken not to melt the little granules onto the surface but instead. To solder them on with a tiny heated point. The various omissions and imperfections, made on purpose, gave the piece of jewelry the artistic character. Soldering was done using(most likely) arseniates and reducing the solder to an impalpable dust. The Syro-Phoenicians brought in other techniques of workmanship. Many jewelers were influenced by their recurrent themes and symbols. Sacred emblems like the solar disc and the half moon were incorporated in the Etruscans’ fast-growing repertoire. Later Etruscans loosened up their very stern geometric stan

Ancient Etruscan Bronze Breast Votive - 200 BC (No Reserve)
Ancient Etruscan Votive Bronze Breast(3 rd Century BC) The idea of a votive. Was an attempt by man to achieve some form of understanding with the gods. By creating an anatomical effigy of the offending organ or part of the body, and placing it in a temple of worship to asklepios, the god of medicine, the dedicant was hoping to persuade the god to heal that part of his or her body. Votives such as this are extremely rare on the art market and can mostly only be found in major museums. They represent the ancient belief that a gift to a God can be given in exchange for a favour. Received or anticipated. For example an ancient Greek man may be suffering from an ailment of his leg and so dedicate a silver plaque to the God of medicine, Asklepios, in the hope that he will cure him. Alternatively, he may have already been cured and in fulfillment ... moreof a vow he made to Asklepios, he may dedicate the plaque. This belief may appear strange to us, as it reduces man's relationship with his Gods to a kind of"religious marketplace" However, this practice was very common in ancient times and actually exists to this day in some modern religions. Object was discovered in Tuscany. Italy Size: Length: 3.0cm(1.2 inches) Width: 3.0cm(1.2 inches) Provenance: Frankfurt. Germany collection; This object is unconditionally guaranteed authentic. Ancient Etruscan Wine cup c.3rd/4th c.BCE
Wonderful ancient wine cup is offered for sale. I was told that it is Etruscan. Though it may be Greek. This Etruscan designation seems consistent with the Etruscan glossy black-ware pieces for with the culture was well known. This cup measures 4" tall and 4" in diameter. It was given to me as a gift in the 1970s from a well known designer who told me that it had been in his collection for some time. As indicated above, the piece appears to have been repaired, but does not seem to be missing any pieces. It is a"classic" piece with a lovely form. Sorry to see it go, but time to pare down the collection!

Ancient Etruscan Bronze Hercle / Hercules Statue - 450 BC
An ancient Etruscan bronze figure of Hercules or Hercle. Dating to 450– 300 BC. In this relatively unusual scene. We see Hercle depicted nude, modelled with the hint of a smile and brandishing his gnarled olive club ready to strike downwards. The tentacle wrapped around his leg would appear to be that of the Lernaean Hydra, the great serpent monster he had been sent to defeat, a seemingly impossible task given that each time it lost a head, the creature grew two more in its place. We are presented with only a hint of the animal creeping up his leg, and are left to imagine the great beast, its many heads hissing at its assailant. The tale of Hercules was known far and wide throughout the ancient world; every man. Woman and child knew of his story, his cunning, strength and bravery. Nowhere was his legacy more keenly felt than in ancient Etruria, ... morewhere Hercules legend grew into a cult of Hercle, a local god who was represented in expressive statuettes such as this. By dedicating these bronze figures, the ancient citizens of Etruria hoped to emulate his achievements, perhaps in hope of an immortal existence themselves. An attractive piece of Etruscan art. Displaying the elongated, almost vulgar style associated with works of the period. Etruscan bronzes are amongst the most celebrated of the ancient world, and have influenced a number of artists such as Alberto Giacometti. Condition: Very good. Left arm and right leg now lost. Unrestored and exhibiting a beautiful olive green patina. Mounted to a bespoke bronze and ebony stand. Height: 4 ⅞ inches. Height mounted: 7 inches. Provenance: Ex. London collection. Acquired 1980's. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
