Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Bell Krater - 375 BC
A beautifully painted. Well provenanced ancient Magna-Graecian Red-Figure Bell Krater, produced in Apulia and dating to the early 4th century B.C. The piece is of typical form for Bell Kraters of this period. With a disc foot, short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip. Adorning the piece bilaterally are two looped handles. On the obverse is a Dionysiac scene. A nude young satyr is depicted standing with his torso turned towards the female figure. Holding a kalathos(a vase often regarded as a fertility symbol) in his left hand and a phiale(offering plate) in his outstretched right. The satyr also wears a necklace and diadem in his hair. Opposite the satyr stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing diaphanous himation(gown) along with bracelets. Earrings, necklace and a saccos(hair net) She holds a wreath and a thyrsus. ... moreThe thyrsus. Associated with Dionysus and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek religion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos such as the maenad depicted, Euripides wrote that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The scene depicted on the reverse shows two himation clad youths each holding a staff. Two opposing jumping weights are depicted above. Perhaps indicating that they are athletes. On the rim is a wreath of ribbed laurel leaves. Whilst below the figurework on both sides is a band of meanders punctuated by chequer squares. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice. Instead, they used bell kraters such as this to mix their wine with water for consumption at symposia(social gatherings) Height: 11 inches. Width at the mouth: 12 inches. Condition: Very good. A couple of fragments reattached at the lip, otherwise unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Spanish art market. Previously in the collection of Mr. Ricardo Batista Noguera, a historian and ancient art expert. Unusually for collectors of his period Mr Noguera photographed

Antique Grand Tour Drawing/Painting on Papyrus GREEK KRATER for Syracuse Museum
BE SURE TO DOUBLE-CLICK THE PICTURES TO SHARPEN THE FOCUS MUCH BETTER! This 7-DAY listing features: what appears to be a very old antique painting on EXTREMELY FRAGILE papyrus. Done for the Archaeological Museum of Syracuse during the 18th or 19thC. If you blow hard on this you could tear it. I will find a plain black metal frame and ship this under glass, framed. It has various rips as shown, and partially missing edges(especially on the lower left) where more writing is seen. But this is not a new item. If this was made for tourists, then it was for 18th/19thC Grand Tourists. The age of the papyrus is very obvious when you view and hold this in your hands. I've seen new/vintage papyrus pages and they are not at all like this one. APPROX. 9" X 12" NO RESERVE with shipping included to the lower 48 states. I am solo listing on ... moreeBay; on those days I am out looking for stuff to list. I'm away from the internet. So please allow me some time to respond to emails. I take great care packing sold items well for safe and secure shipment to you. THANKS FOR LOOKING. I AM UNABLE TO SHIP OUTSIDE THE USA. I answer emails within 2-3 business days M-F 9-5 EST. Euphronios - Sarpedon Krater - Metropolitan Museum of Art -Trojan War Theme
Euphronios- Sarpedon Krater The original item is located in Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York The Euphronios krater(or Sarpedon krater) is an ancient Greek terra cotta krater. A bowl used for mixing wine with water. Created around the year 515 BC, it is the only complete example of the surviving 27 vases painted by the renowned Euphronios and is considered one of the finest Greek vase artifactsin existence. The krater is decorated with two scenes. An episode from the Trojan War is shown on the obverse, this illustration depicts the death of Sarpedon, son of Zeus and Laodamia. The reverse of the krater shows a contemporary scene of Athenian youths from the 6th century BC arming themselves before battle. In the scene of Sarpedon's death, the god Hermes directs the personifications of Sleep(Hypnos) and Death(Thanatos) to carry the fallen ... moreaway to his homeland for burial. While the subject of Sarpedon's death might normally be depicted as a stylized tableau, the figures in this scene are painted in naturalistic poses and with schematic but accurate anatomy. This style is emblematic of the Pioneer Group of late Archaic painters, of whom Euphronios is considered the most accomplished. The scene of the anonymous Greek youths on the reverse shares this naturalistic style, using all the Pioneer Group's characteristic techniques of anatomical accuracy, natural poses, foreshortening, and spatial illusion. Also characteristic of the Pioneer Group is the narrative tension created both by pairing these two scenes on the same piece, and by painting them in a common style. The death of Sarpedon, a quasi-mythological story which would be familiar to anyone viewing the krater, is an episode involving specific historical and mythological figures. The other scene, of the anonymous youths preparing for war, is both more general and explicitly contemporary. The young men are not heroes of legend; with their finely detailed features, they are given personality and character, but they could be any of the youthful soldier

5th Century BC Greek Black Figure Volute Krater Vessel
This auction is for a black figure Greek volute Krater vessel. I have had this vase in my collection for approximately 15 years. I did not see any signs of damage or restoration. There appears to be two philosophers on one side of the vessel and possibly the figure of Hercules with a lion on the other. There are scratches to the body and rubbing with some paint loss to the rim. There is a dent to the foot under the figure of Hercules that appears to be a manufacture flaw. This vessel measures 4.5 inches to top of vessel rim and 5 3/8 inches to top of handles. I consider this Volute Krater Vessel to be in very good condition for its age. I will consider offers. Please contact with any questions. Domestic shipping costs have been estimated and if less than quoted will be refunded to buyer. International buyers please contact for expedited shipping ... morequote with tracking. Please note that customs form will reflect actual auction value.
Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Ceramic Pottery Bell Krater - 4th Century BC
A beautifully painted ancient Greek Apulian red-figure bell krater. Dating to the 4th century BC and originating from a prominent private collection. The krater with disc foot. Short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip, two ribbon-like handles are set bilaterally, beneath the rim is a chevron pattern. The obverse with a nude satyr striding forward and carrying a flaming torch in his right hand, he wears ribbons tied into his hair and across his chest, a thyrsus stands in the background. On the reverse stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing himation gown along with bracelets, earrings, necklace and beads in her hair, she holds a jewellery box and thyrsus. The thyrsus, associated with Dionysus(god of wine) and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek ... morereligion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos, it was believed that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice. Instead, they used bell kraters such as this to mix their wine with water for consumption at symposia(social gatherings) The scene on this stunning piece is clearly Dionysiac in nature, and would have been used in an atmosphere of revelry, wine and merriment. Height: 9 ¼ inches. Width at the mouth: 9 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection. Frankfurt, Germany. A prominent collector of ancient ceramics, rather than focusing on one particular culture Mr. Lohrey went after only the best examples from across antiquity.
