Ancient Cypriot limestone statue of a female Votary / Worshipper 550 B.C.
An exceptional ancient Cypriot limestone figure of female Votary. Dating to the Cypro-Archaic Period, circa. 6th-5th Century B.C. The votary of typical flat backed form. The female figure shown standing upright with her right arm close to her chest, holding an offering, probably a lotus flower. She wears a typical long tunic, beaded necklace with pendant and radiate headband. A rare Cypriot statuette that would have originally been dedicated in an open air sanctuary as a Votive gift(in thanks for or in anticipation of a favour from the presiding Deity) The style of this piece suggests it originates from Golgoi or a nearby temple in the Mesaoria plane. The necklace worn by the figure seems to have been significant. As it is present on many of the figures from Golgoi-Athienou. Perhaps it signified the woman as being a member of the group of ... moreworshippers responsible for maintaining the temple and performing various rituals. Many of these figures entered the western market in the late 19th Century. After a surge of excavations encouraged by Luigi Palma Di Cesnola, first director of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was far more common for the excavations to furnish fragmentary statues, which were then joined together in a deceptive pastiche for sale to Cesnola or the wider art market. It is most unusual to find a figure such as this. That is not only virtually complete, but which exhibits exceptional pigment preservation. One of the finest Cypriot limestone figures we have seen on the market. Height(excluding mount) 11 3/4 inches. Height as mounted: 13 3/4 inches. Condition: Exceptional condition. A clean break in the neck has been filled. Otherwise the piece is completely unrestored and with excellent pigment preservation. Provenance: From a New York Private collection. Acquired in the 1960's. Previously in a French collection, with a late 19th- early 20th Century collector's label at the back reading"Chypre" Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as descri

A beautiful and well provenanced Cypriot terracotta oinochoe(wine jug) dating to the Ptolemaic period. Around 200 B.C. This elegant wheel spun vessel is characteristic of classical styles. Ancient Cypriot Early Bronze Age Black Topped Red Ware Bowl - 2400 BC

An abstracted depiction of a human face with pierced eyed is appliquéd to the outer rim. The two tone black topped red ware has a striking visual effect. And as a technique it seems to have been used by a number of very different early Bronze Age workshops. Width: 5 3/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex collection of Mr J. Davies. Ancient Greek Cypriot Bronze Age Rat Tailed Long Spear - 1200 BC
A large. Rare and well preserved ancient Cypriot Late Bronze Age rats tail spearhead, dating to approximately 1200 BC. This formidable weapon is characteristic of those produced on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus during the Late Bronze Age. Characterised by a long blade. Prominent central midrib and distinctive curled tang(rats tail) Dating to around the time of the Trojan Wars. These impressive weapons were regarded as status symbols by the Bronze Age Cypriots, and would only have been possessed by the elites of society. It is not hard to understand why a weapon of such harmonised splendour yet imposing power would have been so highly regarded, indeed numerous examples have been found in Bronze Age warrior tombs, attributed to wealthy individuals of rank. This piece dates to a period of tumultuous change and collapse in the eastern ... moreMediterranean. A period where warrior groups spread across the seas, invading and devastating many societies, including Cyprus. A vivid insight into this worsening situation comes from a telling letter from the king of Cyprus(Alashiya) to king Hammurabi of Ugarit(1191– 1182 BC) the Cypriot ruler gives advice: You say to me that the enemy shipping has been sighted at sea. Well now. If that is true then be firm, what of your troops, your chariots, where are they stationed? Fortify your towns, bring the warriors and chariots into them and wait for the enemy with stern heart. The reply. Probably never sent, is desperate: The enemy ships are already here. They have set fire to my towns and done great damage to my country…The country is abandoned. This fascinating and formidable Bronze Age weapon is a suitable vestige from an age of anarchy. For a similar example now with the Harvard University Museum. Length: 9 ¾ inches. Condition: Very good. With encrustation and an attractive malachite patina. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Please note: This is a genuine Bronze Age weapon. Offered for sale without reserve to promote our extensive inventory o

Ancient Cypriot Bronze Age White Painted Ware Dipper Cup - 1900 BC.
An ancient Cypriot middle Bronze Age white painted ware dipper cup. Dating to around 1900 BC. The deep bowl with everted rim and rounded base. Adorned with a tall wishbone handle, formed into a zoomorphic image. The body decorated with geometric patterns and an abstracted pair of eyes on the base, all painted in mauve on the cream slip. Termed dipper cups. Vessels such as this piece would have been used to scoop wine or liquid out of a larger vessel. The early Bronze Age potters of Cyprus were compulsive decorators. As such, each vessel was like a hollow piece of sculpture, to be lovingly and individually shaped and ornamented. In this case, complex shapes as this may simply have been playful inventions of Cypriot potters of the time, with no hidden meaning or purpose, but rather with a practical use. Ancient Cypriot Pottery Geometric Period Amphora - 800 BC
A very large and attractive ancient Cypro-Archaic Iron Age Geometric Amphora. Dating to approximately 800 BC. The piece is of typical Cypro-Archaic form. With ring base, pear-shaped body, short, fat neck with collar, everted lip and bilateral u-shaped handles. It is decorated throughout with a cream slip(undercoat) Over which is painted the characteristic Cypriot geometric decoration. The decoration itself runs along the perimeter and consists of multiple concentric circles on the upper shoulder and mid-neck, delineated in charcoal pigment and of such precision to suggest they were made with a compass. Further bands of varying thicknesses adorn the rest of the vessel, together with a jagged line between the handles. A fingerprint in black pigment can be seen on one side just by the circular decoration, hurriedly left by the ancient potter ... moreas he handled the vessel prior to firing. Cypro-Geometric(also called Cypro-Archaic) painted wares represent some of the most characteristic and handsome pottery types from the ancient world. Not only are they beautiful. But the style is quite unique to Cyprus; with their perfect concentric circles on a cream hue, these objects are almost emblematic of the Eastern Mediterranean island. Height: 19 1/2 inches. Condition: Very good. A chip to the lip has been repaired. The pigment is well preserved and completely original. Provenance: Ex. British Private collection of Mr S. Seeger. Ancient Cypro-Archaic Cypriot Terracotta Warrior Figure Statue - 750 BC
An ancient Cypriot terracotta warrior figure. Dating to the Cypro-Archaic period 750– 600 BC. This style shows close parallels with figures found at the village of Ormideia in the south-east of the island. Protecting himself with a shield. The warrior is shown in the heat of battle, his right arm raised to brandish a spear, now lost. Depicted with a thick beard and large eyes redolent with intense ferocity, the painted facial features add a strong sense of character. The long gown is decorated with red stripes and perforated for the attachment of moveable wooden legs, long since perished. It was during the Cypro-Archaic period that the long Cypriot tradition of figurative art reached its height. Male forms in particular became very prominent. And were deposited at sanctuaries and temples. From warriors and musicians to priests and farmers, ... morethese figures weave a vivid tapestry of early Cypriot life; ancient messengers who reveal what it was to inhabit this island over two and a half thousand years ago. Beautiful Ancient Cypriot Cypro-Phoenician Bichrome Terracotta Jug - 950 BC
A beautiful and particularly well preserved ancient Cypriot bichrome ware terracotta jug. Dating to the mid-late Iron Age, 950– 750 BC. This charming little jug exudes the life and character one expects from ancient Cypriot vessels. Sitting upon a disc bade. With piriform body rising elegantly into slender neck and outplayed rim, a small strap handle connects the body to the shoulder. Decorated with a vibrant concentric circle motif which seemingly dances across the surface in black and bright red. The sweeping patterns either side may represent highly abstract representations of animals, likely a fish and bird. The early Bronze Age potters of Cyprus were compulsive decorators. As such, each vessel was like a hollow piece of sculpture, to be lovingly and individually shaped and ornamented, as is evidenced by this wonderful artefact. Height: ... more3 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored and in a fantastic state of preservation. Provenance: This piece is from a large number of antiques. Purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all exhibited at London department store Fortnum& Mason, approximately 15 years ago. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. For added security we offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold. Nonetheless, the existence of a boule or council mentioned in inscriptions suggests some degree of local autonomy, while the elaborate architecture and contents of numerous tombs of this period(see below) suggests the continued economic prosperity of the town. Evidence from stamps on amphora handles suggests that the town engaged in a lively trade with other parts of the island and with Egypt. Few buildings survive from this period because of destruction by later structures. But a small theatre was constructed on the acropolis in the second century BC,
