Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Bell Krater - 375 BC
A beautifully painted. Well provenanced ancient Magna-Graecian Red-Figure Bell Krater, produced in Apulia and dating to the early 4th century B.C. The piece is of typical form for Bell Kraters of this period. With a disc foot, short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip. Adorning the piece bilaterally are two looped handles. On the obverse is a Dionysiac scene. A nude young satyr is depicted standing with his torso turned towards the female figure. Holding a kalathos(a vase often regarded as a fertility symbol) in his left hand and a phiale(offering plate) in his outstretched right. The satyr also wears a necklace and diadem in his hair. Opposite the satyr stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing diaphanous himation(gown) along with bracelets. Earrings, necklace and a saccos(hair net) She holds a wreath and a thyrsus. ... moreThe thyrsus. Associated with Dionysus and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek religion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos such as the maenad depicted, Euripides wrote that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The scene depicted on the reverse shows two himation clad youths each holding a staff. Two opposing jumping weights are depicted above. Perhaps indicating that they are athletes. On the rim is a wreath of ribbed laurel leaves. Whilst below the figurework on both sides is a band of meanders punctuated by chequer squares. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice. Instead, they used bell kraters such as this to mix their wine with water for consumption at symposia(social gatherings) Height: 11 inches. Width at the mouth: 12 inches. Condition: Very good. A couple of fragments reattached at the lip, otherwise unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Spanish art market. Previously in the collection of Mr. Ricardo Batista Noguera, a historian and ancient art expert. Unusually for collectors of his period Mr Noguera photographed

Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Lekythos Ritual Drinking Scene - 350 BC
An ancient Greek red figure lekythos(oil flask) vessel with beautiful painted decoration of a festival scene. Dating to around 350– 300 BC. Of delicate appearance. The piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth. The painted decoration depicts a youth shown nude, wearing only a ring of charms from his shoulder, kneeling and raising a ritual wine cup( skyphos) Swirling tendrils border the scene. The shape. Style and subject of this beautiful vessel reflect strong Attic influence. Attic wares with scenes of children have long been thought to have been connected with the Anthesteria celebration, an Athenian festival held in late February in honour of Dionysus. The Anthesteria was an important festival to celebrate the maturing of the wine, which was opened on the first day ... moreand then consumed during various rituals. Amongst these was a drinking contest organised for the young boys, adorned with charms(as shown on this vessel) who drank from small jugs specially presented to them for the occasion. Though we are presented with a scene redolent with the vibrancy of ancient Greek life. It is poignant that lekythos vessels such as this piece were used to anoint the dead prior to burial and are often found in funerary contexts. As such. This vessel and the scene it depicts have a somewhat haunting presence, reflecting both the joys and fleeting nature of life itself. Height: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. German art market. With Mr. K. Jorg. Previously in a German private collection and acquired around 1975.
