Greek Terracotta Nude Eileithyia (Goddess of Childbirth) Statue Figure 8in
I listed this terracotta a few days ago in the Antiquities- Roman catagory for $395. My thought was that the figure represents Venus and was either from Roman Asia Minor or Roman Egypt. A kind ebayer then contacted me and offered the information that the figure actually represents Eileithya. The Greek Goddess of childbirth(the cult of Eileithya originated on Crete and then spread throughout the Greek and eventually Roman worlds. With this information I ended the listing early in order to conduct more research. I found the following: A similar figure to this one appeared on ebay.uk a while ago which the dealer listed as 4th Century BC. There exists another example in the archaelogical museum at Paestum which dates to c500- c450BC and is clearly of high classical style. The details among these three differ. Though the general form and composition ... moreis the same. This figure may be a terracotta votive of late Classical, Hellenistic, or even Roman origin which was based upon a Classical period cult statue dedicated to Eileithya. There is also the possibility that this statue is a grand tour copy, or even a modern copy. Eilithia holds her robe open to reveal her nude body and sculpturally engage the surrounding space. Children cling to her from behind each shoulder. The statue stands approx. 8 1/4in. It is intact and unrepaired with a few minor chips and a larger loss to the figure's hair. There is a small amount of wear to the details and scattered surface deposits along with scattered minor pitting to the surface. From a private CT collection. Said to have been formed in the 1920's. Offered with a $99 opening bid and no reserve as grand tour or modern. I will let ebay experts decide it's exact origins. Please Read Before Bidding: 1) Due to a rash of low feedback bidder non-payers I now require that all bidders with feedback scores of less than 10 contact me before bidding. ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A WOMAN TANAGRAS (?)
Normal 0 ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A WOMAN TANAGRAS( I’m not experienced in this kind of art. This piece got into my hands incidentally without any authentication papers. And I am not sure about its age and/or origin. Hope that you as a collector would know better than me. On the personal note, I’m always very careful and have NEVER sold a fake. I cannot be a pro in every period/ artist and an honest mistake is always possible. Finally, if you find any discrepancy after you buy the item, your money back is guaranteed! Terracotta figurine depicts a woman standing with the weight on her right leg. Figure is tightly wrapped in a himation over a floor-length chiton. Her head is turned slightly to her right. Her arms crossed on her chest underneath the himation. It measures about 7 1/4” tall. The base measures 2 3/8” X 1 3/4” There is ... morea vent cut in the reverse side of the figurine. Remains of pink paint on her face and light red and blue on the himation. The clay around her neck is chipped. Possibly her head was veiled by himation. And after a close inspection I found a hairline crack on inside surface of the figurine, close to the base, but the clay is intact. P.S. I found information on-line about the similar figurines: Tanagras” are named after the site in Boeotia. Central Greece, where thousands of similar figures were unearthed in the early 1870s. Figures of men, children and comic actors were also found at Tanagra, but standing female figures are the most numerous. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. Most Tanagra figures are mold-made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure the even distribution of heat during the firing. After firing. The figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally“modelers of girls” Dear Buyer, Your bid is a commitment. Pl

Ancient Greek Terracotta Pottery Figure of Hermes - 300 BC
An ancient Greek terracotta figure of Hermes. Dating to 300– 200 BC. Staring wistfully out into the distance. The god is shown nude, the lower legs are crossed and he wears only a chlamys draped across his left shoulder. He perches on the edge of a rocky outcrop, with the left hand clinging to the side and the other clutching his distinctive leather purse. The style was almost certainly inspired by an even older original by Lysippos, a later copy of which Though a beautifully tender piece of Greek art. This wonderful little sculpture hides a deeper story. Often these figures were used as religious offerings to the gods they portrayed; as the god of travel, commerce and the secret wisdoms(amongst many others) we can only guess at what the ancient Greek who deposited this artefact was seeking from Hermes. Please note that this piece has been ... morethermoluminescence tested and found to date to the Hellenistic period. The new buyer will be provided with all relevant certification. Height: 4 inches.
