A large. Rare, ancient Italic Daunian bowl dating to approximately 500 B.C. The piece is decorated with a cruciform effigy internally. With geometric and angular motif around, rendered in black and umber. In between the looped handles on each side are pairs of large pointed horns, perhaps indicating a ceremonial function. Many cultures, including the Greeks, revered bulls for their strength and virility. Daunia was a historical region in southern Italy about which little is known. Unlike the Apulian Greeks. An ancient native Italic Daunian polychrome painted Anthropomorphic Kyathos. Dating to approximately 350 B.C. A highly decorated and imaginative ceramic. The handle of which has been stylized into an Anthropomorphic plank figure, with two eyes, a nose, headdress and a long cape. The vase is wide and heavy, with short neck and flaring lip. Concentric bands decorate the piece circumferentially, with cross hatch and other geometric decoration adorning the vessel. Daunia is a region of Puglia in Southern Italy. In ancient times this region developed a distinctive ceramic art. Influenced by the neighbouring Greek colonies but unique in style. A genuine. Large and very rare ancient Graeco-Italic terracotta Olla, dating to approximately 550 B.C. This vessel shape is known as an Olla. Likely used either for cooking and storage or for funerary purposes. Of globular form. With flattened circular base, biconical body, flared mouth and with two hand protomes between a pair of looped handles. The body and mouth of the pot with linear bands and geometric decoration in redish-brown paint. This rare form of vessel dates to the Daunian IIB Subgeometric period(approx 550-500 B.C. Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE Ancient Greek Daunian style painted terracotta ceramic vessel. Probably a jug. Glazed. Painted geometric ornament in black. Brown and cream. Age unknown. I have no experience of handling Greek pottery so I am reluctant to express an opinion on its age. All I can say for certain is that it is not new. Provenance: previously belonged to a man in London who acquired it before 1980. I purchased it at an auction in England. 773 grams. 15.5cm(6" high. Very good condition for age. Large chip to rim. Paint is rubbed or missing from patches revealing terracotta body beneath. Ingrained dirt to much of body. International postage is now very expensive. If the postage cost is less than shown then I will refund the difference. I want all my customers to be happy. Returns accepted.
