A nice example of a Colonial Connecticut Queen Anne chair dating before the American Revolution. This chair features a well shaped crest with nicely articulated front legs and stretcher. Based on examples in Robert Trent's Hearts and Crowns this chair may have originated in the Stratford area of Connecticut. But is a form of Queen Anne or"York" chair found on both sides of Long Island Sound with design originally having come from New York. This chair is in good shape with only minor scuffs and use marks commensurate with its age and is quite usable. This is a very sophisticated"country" chair which may have been produced in Boston for export to other colonies. While plain the back is every bit as sophisticated as a high style chair transitioning into the Chippendale period about 1760. The crest is beautifully proportioned as is the splat. The ends of the back post are splayed out in an urban manner giving it extra support and is reminiscent of earlier design back feet. The plain single side stretcher is a construction technique much used in Boston and Newport and other urban areas. The boldly turned front stretcher is reminiscent of the medial stretcher found on high style Boston Queen Anne chairs. While the round strecher is found on Boston chairs. It is also found on chairs coming from the Salem area as well. This chair is structurally sound with a very worn and flaky coat ... moreof paint that may be its original finish. If not original. It is certainly old. The piece has a very high seat 17 1/2 inches and stands 39 1/2 inches tall. It is 18 1/2 inches deep and 15 inches wide. It seems to retain its original rush seat, but this seat was over upholstered in the Victorian period. Some tacks and scraps of fabric remain. As seen in the photos, there is wear to the front section of the rush seat. Although I try to describe all items as accurately as possible please ask all questions before bidding. This Queen Anne style chair was built to last! This arm chair was upholstered in an off white or cream broadloom type fabric with a high tufted back and open sides. The top is scalloped as is the wood framing on the bottom; this nicely compliments the front cabriole style legs. Gives the chair a French feel. The fabric is vintage worn on edges and corners and has 2 areas of slight discoloration. The wooden part of the arms is faded.
