This pair of handsome Windsor armchairs are inspired in design by late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century examples. The rear protrusion on the solid seat provided for additional struts to the back to add to the strength of the back supports. This is a feature not found on all models of Windsor chairs. The wood is difficult to verify. Possibly cherry or maple. In some cases there are a combination of timbers. Bearing stencils to the underside of the seats stating Bucks County Provincial.

Each stunning Armchair has a carved arched rear back rail comprising of a central swag which are flanked at each end by a rising acorn. The back rail leads down to a pair of reeded and turned upright supports. Centred in the middle by a very comfortable shield shaped overstuffed upholstered back rest. The conforming acanthus carved arm rails have matching upholstered elbow ... morepads. Each leading to a foliate scrolled hand rail, and rising above an inverted leg support which terminate in reeded& turned tapering legs, The quality overstuffed upholstered seat base retains the original metal springs making the chairs extremely comfortable indeed. The fabulous quality upholstery was renewed to the tune of several hundred pounds just over two years ago. So both armchairs are therefore immaculate and without movement to any of the joints. The chairs are relatively wide and extremely impressive throughout. I hope the photographs have done them some justice! The shorter one is 32" tall and that one has the back pulling away from the side and the damage to the bottom left. They both need painted. They need painted. One has the seat cushion. A fine pair of mid 19th century late Windsor armchairs in maple and pine with bamboo turnings.Found abandoned in the basement wine cellar of The Olde Foundry Street General Store and dating to the 1840-1870 period.Crafted with unusually wide proportions for this type of chair,they are extremely sturdy yet retain that airiness associated with the birdcage windsors of an earlier day.Maple with pine seats and hardwood stretchers,probably local ash.In excellent condition but probably resurfaced at some point in their life.However,considering that they were left abandoned in the wine cellar of the old store and date to the same 1850 period of the structure,they may be so well preserved as to have been found in this fine state. I did not find out until having signed the contract to purchase the place that the"as is" also required that ... moreI inherit all of it's abandoned contents.But I have since felt blessed by having acquired many early furnishings and household items that I once scoured markets and shops in order to find!Unfortunately I simply cannot house them all.This pair of armchairs were left to my keeping but alas have to go.They have a marvelously warm.Honey hue and are quite comfortable.Very sturdy,all joints and doweled pegs are tight and sound.They stand 34 inches high,seats are 19 inches wide and stand 16 1/2 inches from the floor.Nicely curved back crest are comfy and cozy.All turned spindles are intact and tight. Lovely pair of walnut armchairs. Definitely need reupholstering. I considered recovering them. But then I would have to charge more.besides, I thought it best for the buyer to choose their own fabric. The only reason for the super-low price is that my car needs an expensive repair.Frames are sturdy. These chairs were probably made in the 1900's. May have some slight scratches, repairs, etc. due to their age, although I haven't noticed any. Shipping for these is purely the responsibility of the buyer. These stylish and very comfy chairs date to the 1930s and are in pretty good condition. Please see photos below. There is minor wear at the corners and the blue fabric needs to be tacked back at the base. No smell. From a pet and smoke free house. 18th /19th Century French Pair of Fauteuil, Armchairs delicate Carving, Mohair
Wow…these chairs are stunning! I think they are 18th century.but the might be a little newer…definitely OLD…check out all of the pictures…so you can see construction.and carving details. They are super ELEGANT fauteuils(open arm chairs)with beautifully hand-caned backs…and the bottoms have been upholstered in luxurious Mohair(velvet) with down filled cushions. The fabric is black and has a super rich look and feel. The tone of the wood contrasted with the super dark black of the mohair is GORGEOUS. Another thing that makes me feel they are 18th century is the scale of the chairs…they are very diminutive…from the floor to the top of the back of chair is only 33 1/2" from the floor to the top of the seat cushion is appx 19 1/2" The actual"seat" of the chair is appx 21" across and 17" deep. I can only say CHECK ... moreout all of the angles…and the gentle curves and delicate floral carving. The finish looks OLD and appropriate…I think the wood is walnut. It's very dark under the finish)there are some places where the edges are"worn" away…if you look closely(it's not really too noticeable…and again, consistent with age)you'll see these minor losses to the wood. Sturdy, Elegant, Classic! Perfect ANYWHERE in your fine home!
