They have been beautifully hand carved from solid mahogany, the fluted front legs terminate in their original porcelain and brass castors and they have been beautifully reupholstered in sumptuous hand dyed button backed leather. This is a very stylish pair of armchairs which would look wonderful in your lounge or library. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored and reupholstered in our workshops. Here's a RARE Pair of Mid-Century Modern Kroehler Lounge Chairs/ Armchairs. These chairs are in excellent condition. And rarely used. The Back is approx. 31 1/2" High, it's 32" Front to Back, 29" Wide, and the Seat is 16 1/2" off the Floor. They belonged to a friend who bought them new and rarely used them. They came from a smoke free home and were professional cleaned on a regular basis. They don't show any stains or tears. Very light wear on several corners. Legs show a few scuffs. There are no labels on these. I have never come across this design before. Very Edward Wormley or Harvey Probber. They have exotic veneer applied to the wood to give them great lines. Condition as you can see is not so good. These do need restoration. there is veneer repair needed and some loss to finish. upholstery seems ok. But these would look a lot better in say black. In their current condition they could be considered'shabby chic' with several minor imperfections and a rough finish but I like them that way and they still look great. One condition issue that I show in the last photo is a small piece of the wood chipped off the inside of one of the rear legs. Because it's on the inside. It's not easy to see and would be a quick minor repair. I've used them just as they are for many years and have had them next to modern art. Pair of Chinese carved hardwood horseshoe back armchairs. C. 19th century, hongmu or huali. Huanghuali Description: These large. Heavy Chinese armchairs are made from dense hardwood in the traditional horseshoe-back style of exposed mortise-and-tenon construction, with continuous curved back rail terminating in raised-relief carved ends, the back rail supported by pierced-carved splat, with projecting filigree carvings attaching to the splat and top rail. The seat is framed in wood with a finely-woven natural fiber seat, probably of rattan; the legs, which also terminate in carved ends, are connected by low stretchers. The chairs have a darker color than the natural wood. The result of what appears to be years of accumulated furniture polish plus grime. I cleaned the back of one leg to see what's under the grime-and it reveals a tight ... morereddish grain that is consistent with these types of wood(see next-to-last photo- Incidentally. The cleaning was done as a necessary test to onlt about 1% of the surface of the piece-and the back leg of just one chair) Expert opinion: A leading world-class expert in Chinese furniture. Roger Schwendeman(Google the name-he's an American antiques dealer based in Beijing of antique-chinese-furniture dot com) has recently looked at photos of the chair and informed me that these chairs are either hongmu or huali. Now. Huanghuali and huali are the same exact species of wood(and are both in the hongmu family) The prefix huang(yellow) is used to describe old huali furniture whose color has mellowed to a golden tone due to exposure to light. Since my chairs have been covered in grime for so long. Their tone appears to be closer to old huali that has not been yellowed by age. So. When Roger says huali, he is referring to the same wood that turns the color of huanghuali yellow with age. This is an authentic pair of knoll Saarinen tulip chairs. Obviously these are the armchair model. And the bases do swivel. If I'm reading the stamps on the foam padding in the cushions correctly, it looks like these particular chairs are from 1988. As the pictures show. One chair is in better condition than the other. The powder coating is cracking on the base of 1 chair, but the other chair base is in great shape. At any rate, this can be fixed any time in the future. When I received these chairs. They had been spray painted red. The paint job was very poorly done(thank goodness) so I was able to remove about 99% of the red paint. The tiny spots that remain are primarily under the cushion, or are at the edge of a scratch, etc. and removing this would possibly scratch the fiberglass or damage the powdercoat, so I've left it alone. ... moreThe few traces of paint that remain don't affect the function or asthetic of the chairs in any noticeable way. The cushions and their padding are all original. As is everything about these 2 chairs. The aluminum base is in excellent condition on both chairs, as is the fiberglass shell.
