Antique stencilled Hitchcock side or parlour chair. Uncommon"turtle back" shape has characteristic gold stencilling over a black finish. The main design features a group of fruits with additional geometric accents accross the chair. The chair also has a rush seat and turned legs and stretchers. The company signature on the back of the seat dates this chair between 1823 and 1843. This chair is in very good condition considering its age. There is some breakage to the rush seat as well as damage to the painted finish. Mostly at edges and corners. Some of the areas of missing paint look like they were filled in later in a dark color. See pictures. No other breaks or repairs. The chair stands 34" tall and measures 18" wide. The seat is 15.5" deep. THERE ARE dings to the paint throughout the surface of the chair. However, NO chips to the wood and no cracks in the wood. The structure is sound and solid. The chair back is 34" tall, it is 22.5" wide, 19.5 inches front to back, and the seat is18" off the ground. It weighs a little less than 13 lbs. Because of the size it has to go freight. This is a beautiful pair of 19th Century Hitchcock chairs in their original decorated mustard paint. They have a guitar shaped seat with newer rushing(probably 1970-80's) Which is not as thick at the original rushing. The chairs measure approximately 18" wide, 18" deep and 33 1/2" tall. Listed here is an authentic letter cover written to Union General Ethan Allen Hitchcock in March of 1863. This cover bears an inscription written in Hitchcock’s own hand on the left side obverse concerning two letters written to radical anti-slavery author and minister John Weiss of Watertown. Mass. Known for his investigation of fraud perpetrated on some of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory. Ethan Allen Hitchcock was born at Vergennes. Vermont, on May 18, 1798. A grandson of the Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen, Hitchcock graduated from West Point in 1817. He pursued a military career that involved assignments at the United States Military Academy as an instructor and service in the Old Northwest, in the Seminole and Mexican wars, and as commander of the U.S. Army's Pacific Division. He retired from the military as a colonel ... morein 1855 only to return as a major general of volunteers during the Civil War. After the start of the Civil War. Hitchcock applied to return to the service, but was rejected. It was only after the intervention of his former general, Winfield Scott, that he was commissioned a major general in the U.S. Army and became special adviser to the Secretary of War from February 17. 1862. From March 17 to July 23, 1862, he served as the chairman of the War Board, the organization that assisted President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in the management of the War Department and the command of the Union armies during the period in which there was no general-in-chief. Maj. Gen. George B. The back of the ivory colored mirror looks like it hasmold spots BUT IT DOES NOT. It is a floral print embedded in the woodpanel itself. I repeat. Antique Hitchcock Stencilled Plank Bottom Sewing Nursing Rocker 1850's NICE! NR
You are bidding on a hitchcock sewing rocker or nursing rocker probably from made in the mid to late 1800's. It was originally mustard color buttermilk paint with lots of stencilling on it. I believe there was a coat of red buttermilk paint possibly applied under the mustard originally. Look closely at photos and you will see all the stencilling, it is just very light. The seat is almost 1 1/2 thick plank has a split that was either there from the time it was made or for many, many, years. Someone has screwed a piece of plywood to the bottom for suport and filled part of the crack with wood putty. I am going to sell it just as I found it but if you purchase it and want us to take the plywood off the bottom, clamp the seat back together and us some old wood to make about three slats across the bottom like lots of these type dining room ... morechairs had with bevel edges on the slats, we will do so for a nominal fee. The rocker is still sturdy, not falling apart, could be used. I think this is pretty rare. I have a hardbound book titled The Building Of A Book published in Dec.1906 edited by Frederick H. Hitchcock. A series of practical articles written by experts in the various departments of book making and distributing with an introduction by Theodore L. De Vinne. Published by The Grafton Press New York. The pictures will show that the back is broken loose& cracked in places. Not bad for 107 years old. The most ironic thing about this book in my opinion is that the face of some of the sigs have NOT been trimmed. Pretty good for a book on building a book when you can't read all of the pages!
