The piece is not signed but there are some numbers on the bottom The table measures 38 3/4 inches long 19 1/2 inches wide 18 1/4 inches tall The table is in excellent condition with no cracks. There is a tiny spont of veneer along one edge that is missing and the veneer on the botton of the table has come loose in spots but other than that the table is in excellent condition. In fact, it has the old Mahogany Association label on the right inside drawer, which was used by American quality furniture manufacturers starting at the turn of the 20th century until the mid century to designate genuine crafted mahogany from other woods. This piece is the real thing! It was professionally refinished by a well-known restorer of high-end and antique furniture in the Boston area. Condition is outstanding. The bureau is just gorgeous! This American Chippendale Ladies Writing Desk is elegant in every detail. It has North wind Lion motif on all five of the drawer handles and on the sides of the curvilinear legs. The legs extend gracefully down into traditional claw and balls on the floor. Ii is deep relief carved on all surfaces. The upper desk surface has an exquisite mahogany top outlined with an even more beautiful burl mahogany border. Description: This listing is for a Chippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with ... morebrass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. English George III Period Chippendale Side Chairs w/ Reticulated Ribbon-Back Splats Third Quarter of the 18th Century c. 1760-80 Item# 110001WUW30 This listing is for a pair of Fine English George III Period Chippendale Antique Side Chairs. 18th Century probably circa 1760-70. They are visually exciting works of art. Each with pierced reticulated ribbon-back(or vertical ribbon-back) carved splat designs. The crest is a single piece of carved mahogany that drops onto both stiles, the splat bannisters likewise tenoned into the bottom and top of the chair frame, each being carved of a single piece of mahogany with the softly concave molding masterfully executed. The stiles have wonderful sense of motion, each with true individuality when compared against the next- these sidewind in a subtle bending form into the crest. The leg and stile are ... morea single piece. Moving from a well carved serpentine form in the stile to a chamfered half-cocked and backswept leg. These are locked together in a mahogany box-stretcher structure, whereby the side and back rails of the stretcher tenon into the leg, with the middle crossing stretcher half-dovetailing beneath either side rail to lock perfectly in place. The Marlboro front legs are molded on the front and side, leaving the back chamfered with no design. A serpentine form green upholstered seat rests over this entire structure, with some replaced blocking keeping the frame incredibly strong. This is a somewhat unusual design. Made more so by the exceedingly fragile splat that probably resulted in many sets being destroyed, likewise by the incredible cost of crafting such an intricate design. With a very dark and oxidized finish beneath later polishing, the pair have a nearly ebonized appearance. They feature only the best in English craftsmanship, with incredible carving and tight clean lines. Antique George III English Chippendale Arm Chair, c1760
Description: This listing is for a Period English George III Chippendale Walnut Arm Chair with a Vase-form splat. Probably circa 1760. Perhaps the most romantic part of the chair is the sheer intensity of patina throughout the chair. It is simply gorgeous, the entire chair maintaining what appears to be original finish with later layers of wax applied. Most of the repairs are very early and have fully oxidized to become part of the finish. The arms are masterfully turned. It has a light green leather upholstered seat, which appears to be a mid 20th century replacement. Turning the chair upside down, you can see a nearly black level of oxidization. Both front legs have light fluting along the outer corners, finishing the lines. The chair uses peg construction throughout, bringing the entire frame and structure together. This is a wonderful ... morefireside chair, and would bring life and romance to any room. It is structurally sound, though the arms would need to be reinforced for more practical use. The seat measures 23" by 17" The arm measures 27" from arm to arm. It is 38" high. With the seat sitting 18" from the ground. It is a comfortable piece, but more importantly a quite amazing work of art. Condition: Visually Excellent Condition It has numerous repairs to it. Most of which are pictured. Separation of joints here and there. The left hand arm(left hand side if sitting in the chair) has a minor split to the base, where the turned support meets the frame of the seat- this weakens the arm, but does not visually impair the piece. The leather seat has a tear on it, and light crackling throughout the leather cover. Blocks inside of seat frame are 20th century replacements. Age appropriate wear to finish, as well as scratches and abrasions throughout, many of which have fully oxidized to become part of the patina. Please review photos for more full condition. Antique Cherry Corner Cabinet, Chippendale, c. 1820
This is a wonderful antique Chippendale corner cabinet made from cherry. The top portion of this piece has a broken pediment top with a flame finial and dental molding. The original doors were probably blind doors converted to glass in the 1860-80s. The interior has four shelves with scalloped edges. The base has a double set of doors over bracket feet. The bottom portion has some replacements that date from the 1860-80s. We just moved the piece and I will add the measurements on Monday when I am back in the store. It is in excellent condition. Ready to go in the home. Top is from the early 20thc and has been refinished. The top could be birch? The case is from the 1780's approx. Two back knee blocks are missing as shown(one front leg and one rear) Some patched repairs to front drawers as seen. Normal wear for the age. Antique hardware is probably old replacements. Circa 1760-80 Item# 120106UTT08 This early tall case antique chest of drawers is a fine example of 18th Century Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Representing the desire for curvature and embellishment even in the clean lines we've come to love from Pennsylvania cabinetmakers. Framed inside the handsome carved crown projecting over the entire case, the top of this tall case chest of drawers is unusually finished with a smooth planed walnut surface. It's height is just at the level where a craftsman must choose whether to leave it unfinished. Or if a tall client might be offended by the rough surface- clearly the cabinetmaker chose to err on the side of caution in his design by finishing it completely. The fully graduated gallery ... moreof three small drawers over six broad drawers naturally draws the eye upward. True to Pennsylvania tradition. The secondary woods of the drawers are thick and generous; each drawer has thick hand dovetails front and back, the bottom being very heavily chamfered along all edges to rabbet into the sides. Replaced hardware on each drawer is somewhat mismatched- look carefully at the photos for details. The original hardware does appear to have been batwing, which would be appropriate for a piece of this design and formality, though clearly larger and with more presence than the current brasses. Many of the locks are still original, secured with rose head nails- the holes for the replaced hardware have been carefully respected and for the most part are undisturbed(see photos for exceptions) Flanking the drawers are two long fluted columns with ring-turned capitals and bases. Seemingly lifting the canopy on this chest and making the overall heavy design appear light and easy. The sides of the case dovetail top and bottom into the case, though the top dovetails are hidden beneath the walnut top. English George III Period Chippendale Bachelor Antique Chest of Drawers Last quarter of the 18th Century. Probably c. 1780-1800 Mahogany veneers& solid woods(primary surfaces) Oak(drawer secondary surfaces) Pine(drawer facings. Case secondaries) Item# 130001LFF27 This is a fine English George III Chippendale Antique Bachelor Chest of Drawers of wonderful proportions. Crafted during the last years of the 18th Century. Probably c. 1780-1800. The deep cognac mahogany color has been well retained, clearly a chest that was protected properly from the damaging rays of the sun, the grains of the wood glowing through years of waxing. It has a well developed patina throughout, and while it does not have it's original surfaces, the finish is early and quite fine. The top projects slightly on all three facing edges. A rounded molding framing ... morethe perimeter and protecting the edges of the veneer. Beneath the top, a thin blade surface slides from the top, a feature identifying this chest as a"Bachelor" chest of drawers- this convenient device was quite popular during the period, allowing the chest of drawers to be used actively as a desk surface for a quick letter or for reading and studying in the evening hours. The blade is crafted of pine secondary woods with glue blocks giving strength to the overall frame, this covered with a brown replaced felt and edged in mahogany veneers with two tiny cast brass original knobs at the facade. Four graduated drawers line the case. These with period circular stamped brass hardware in the original holes(exception with the lowest drawer. Where the hardware is slightly mismatched and holed just beside the original holes) flanking original stamped brass keyhole escutcheons. The drawer face is framed in projecting cockbead molding, the frame dovetailed front and back. Inside of the case, some drawers have partial dustboards, others are had partial dustboards which are now absent and replaced with 20th Century runners on either side. Dovetailed case and superbly formed crown molding. After careful examination and realizing there was no such animal as an eight drawer Chippendale period maple dresser. We recently reexamined it to discover that it was cleverly re-worked about 100 years ago to make it into an eight drawer chest. It was a very high quality re-working of this piece. American c.1810. Desk has exposed dovetail joints on top, a slant lid with inlaid corners and a center diamond, opening to a fitted interior of small drawers over a case having pull out lid supports flanked by a single drawer over 3 graduated drawers, all with inlaid designs on corners and standing on splayed bracket feet. Desk is in original as found condition with scratches, gaps and dings, slight finish loss and wear and having older repairs and a recently rebuilt leg support. Seems to be period hardware.
