Capable of seating six people comfortably when it is fully opened. The mahogany leaves are single solid boards with reeding along the edges that mirrors the legs, each hanging on original hand forged iron hinges to easily swing up and down. A flamed mahogany veneer completes the apron of the table. The table has six legs, an expensive feature that was time consuming and reserved for a more affluent client. It allows the table to remain firmly rooted while the leaves are extended, truly making it a fully functional dining table. The legs swing over knuckle joints formed of solid oak. In unison with the exterior of the table frame, this surrounding what appears to be pine secondary wood making up the inside of the table frame. These thick secondary woods are remarkably strong and allow the leg to remain in nearly untouched condition after nearly 200 years. The table rests over turned double-rings over sharp reeding, to terminate again in double ringlets over tapered feet. This is a very attractive example for collectors of American forms. Crafted in a distinct manner to that of John Needles. Needles is well known as an artisan with significant output in the Baltimore. Maryland area during the height of the American Classical period. Labeled and documented works by the shop of John Needles are typically accompanied by unusually strong and nearly triangular reeding on legs or pillars, typically in tables though also found in large cabinets and sideboards. He was most active in the years of 1810-48, where the majority of his twenty-four surviving documented forms are crafted. After serving a five-year apprenticeship on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with James Neale of Easton. Needles migrated to Baltimore in 1808 and after a brief apprenticeship under Edward Priestl

Just took this out of the barn. This is a late 18TH century American Side Chair. With Heart Cut out and Rush Seat. This chair was always over at the Island and quite possibly could have been made there. It is in great condition.All original except the rush seat may be an old replacement done in the 1940's. This is a beautiful chair with full height and as you can see is pegged at top crest and double pegged front legs. You can pick this chair up to save shipping cost. Early American Chippendale style dining chair
This is an early American Chippendale-style chair. It is very intricately carved. With an Acanthus motif. It has straight legs. The original upholstery is preserved under the current yellow cloth. A professional restorer confirmed the vintage of the chair, largely because there are no screws in the construction. The chair is in very good shape for its age. The only mark from the original manufacturer is"XII" carved into the top of one of the corner braces(under the seat) It is a dark hardwood, likely Mahogany. The chair is painted and distressed in white over black so that the carved designs are enhanced. Their is a slightly crackled finish to the paint in some areas. The vertical back supports/splats feature a dimensional, carved acanthus leaf design on both the interior and exterior profile. The corner and side legs are turned wood with a small fluted section. They are adorned with a three flower medallion at their mid point. The seat apron features scrolled acanthus leaves which connect in the center to form a fleur de lis accent. This is one of the best 19th Century Chippendale chairs we have ever seen much less had the pleasure of handling. It is upholstered in a lovely rose silk brocade fabric with brass tact accents. The fabric has some sun fading around its very base but is overall very good condition with no rips or tears. This chair's structure has us very curious and we would love to tear it down to carefully examine the construction of its frame for clues as to its maker and origin. The fabric is very old but simply to fine& expensive to assuage our curiosity be cutting it to examine the frame. This is a very sophisticated piece of formal Chippendale furniture of the very highest quality and construction. This is a magnificent pair of ornate Chinese Chippendale Brighton style arm chairs of exceptional quality and craftsmanship with both in very good condition. They are hand made and they use no screws or nails that I can see. One of the caned seats is newer than the other- both seats are in excellent condition. Each chair measures about 35 inches in height by 22 inches in width by 24.5 inches in depth with a seat bottom height from the floor of about 18 inches. It has been painted flat black.over a few coats of paint.gold. Green, and lastly red. At present, it is solid flat black. The frame of the chair is in very good condition. I found one small crack in the metal at the back of the seat on one side. It is still strong and the crack seems to only be superficial. The chair pad needs to be recovered. At present it is white vinyl and has no hole or tears. There are stains on the vinyl that I was unable to clean. And the covering on the bottom looks really bad with mold stains and rusty staples. 1800's Chippendale Chair Set (8)
This is an 8 piece. Mahogany, chippendale chair set. We bought them ~8 years ago from this local, fine dealer of UK antiques- Barley Twist of Hinsdale, IL. We are moving to a smaller place so, alas, they and the dining table must go. At the time, this dealer told us that they were likely Irish and dated from the mid 1800's. As hopefully the photos show, they are in very fine condition. The finish may be original but I don't have the expertise to say for sure. The seat fabric, definitely not original, is how they were when we bought the set- a dusty rose"velour" The photos may suggest that they are heavy, old things but they are actually light to pick up and you'll notice that their backs are more air than not. From a Baltimore estate and purchased in Washington DC in the 1960's. This wooden chair has a sherbet shade of orange finish with some whitewash and distressing which is original. Construction is string. Cushion needs to be replaced or recovered. Seat measures 22 ½" front and slims to 16" in back. 21" wide arms and tallest point in back is"37. It is local pickup.
