Each of the sturdy chairs has a beautiful lyre back; there are 2 chairs with arms and 4 matching chairs without arms. Seat covers show some minor stains; seats may be easily reupholstered. The table is expandable with leaves. Table pads for the entire length of the table will be included if desired; pads have some staining but can be used under a tablecloth. You are bidding on FOUR mahogany inlaid dining chairs in original finish. They have inlaid Hepplewhite legs. Stiles are line inlaid, backrest has a carved lyre(most often associated with Duncan Phyfe) and top rail is inlaid with a conch shell. The fully upholstered seats have springs(very comfortable) and are upholstered in a brownish quilted fabric with Chinese decoration. Seven American Federal Antique Dining Chairs, New York c. 1805-15, Mahogany Set
Set of Seven American Federal Mahogany Dining Chairs Probably New York. Possibly Philadelphia c. 1805-15 Chairs stamped"M B" on back rails Item# 130210WXD05 This is a delightful set of period American Federal Dining Chairs. Almost certainly New York City c. 1805-1815. The"bell-shaped" seat and square back was commercially successful only in New York City and Philadelphia, the only two centers that consistently produced the form. This set is particularly attractive with the unusual front legs, each deeply reeded and tapered, set on a cant with the seat- the effect is wonderful, lightening the shape of the chairs, particularly as the bell-shape juxtaposes the square austerity of the neoclassical profile. Each back is crafted identically, the crest dropping onto the stiles and spindles with small tenons; the plain square ... moreback is deeply reeded, terminating into the seat with a shaped panel return. The back side of the splat reveals a canted frame and stiles, squaring at the seat frame to flow into backswept square rear legs. The seat frames are American Ash[visual analysis. Not micro-analysis] with[possibly] cherry medial stretchers; the craftsmanship is quite ingenious, as the round of the seat would naturally place the most pressure on where the stiles join the frame. To protect the chairs from this, a medial stretcher dovetails into either side, the gap filled with a thin piece to distribute pressure along the stretcher evenly. The only chair where this is not the case is the arm chair, where the length of the arm acts as a square and removes the need for this labor intensive seat joinery. The back rail of each seat is branded"M B" and each chair is numbered on the medial stretcher, leading us to believe the original set had at least twenty chairs in it. Set of Eight Regency Style Antique Solid Rosewood Dining Chairs 20th Century Item# 130110KUX05 This very attractive set of chairs is crafted with incredibly expensive solid rosewood in every component excepting the corner blocks. Of exceptional quality. The wood is remarkably hard and takes on a high polish for a deep and dark glow in the grains. The ribbed and random flow of the wood is unmatched by any domestic wood, entirely captivating and without peer. Crafted after the Regency form of the early 19th Century, these chairs were crafted at some point during the 20th Century. The crest rail is back-curving and deep, flanked on either side as the stiles rise from the foot through the curve of the crest; the splat is crafted of two large X forms carved of solid rosewood in a half-lap at the cross-section. The seats are straight along the ... morefront and curve inward at the back, the apron frame tenoned into each knee corner and stile and secured with triangular corner blocks; the seats are a somewhat more recent caning under a tufted velvet upholstered cushion(these somewhat stained, though still acceptable) The chairs rest over turned and tapered front legs. The chairs were not originally purchased with the table but make a beautiful set. The set is in good condition. The table top has some scratches light scratches and a couple of spots that could use touching up with stain from normal wear. In some areas the stain needs reapplying but the table is in good working condition; Not broken! Unusual antique shabby dining table and chairs
We started with a beautiful. Solid antique table with wide round legs and solid, carved chairs that just needed a new surface and we did a five step process to make it simply gorgeous. We began with a light sanding, a full coat of Annie Sloan's Swedish red followed on top by another complete coat of her Provence color, then we lightly sanded to bring out the underlying color and then completed the entire set with her clear wax to keep the colors muted and sophisticated and protected. On the chairs- we recovered them with a Italian/renaissance brown pattern with just a hit of the soft turquoise and the result as you see, makes it a one-of-a-kind spectacular set. I would estimate the true value of the set to be safely from around $700-800 to approx. $1200. The center expansion leaf in the middle is painted to match and hides into the bottom ... moreof the table when not in use. The table seats six easily and possibly eight.
