It has been recaned and has a wonderful patina that has been preserved and not refinished. This chair is extremely comfortable and solid. The recaned seat will last for years to come. Derby. Knowlton and Co. was established in Gardner in 1863. Several years later, Mr. Derby bought out his business partners. In 1880 he established P. Derby& Co. By 1897 P. Derby& Co. was listed as the second-largest chair manufacturer in the country. It had branches in Boston, New York and Chicago. The company specialized in cane furniture, but also made traditional wooden tables and chairs. It went out of business in 1935. This chair still has the label on the underside of the seat. Antique wood desk swivel chair on casters
I don't know how old this chair is. My father always said he remembered it as a child; he did not know when his father got it. That being so. It would be at least 85 years old. The casters work smoothly and are original. No cracks in the wood or pulled screws. Sound joints. Solid hardware. The spring that tensions the back rest is in 3 pieces and I can't tell if that's intended or if it broke, though I suspect the latter. Tensioner still works, but seems I recall when I was a child that the backrest had more travel. Adjustable seat height. It's actually in remarkably good condition with incredibly few appearance dings. Pic shows the smudge of white paint on the seat front edge; and there are a few spatters of white paint on the seat. It probably would shine up almost to new, though that may not be the appropriate thing to ... moredo to an original piece that could be 100 years old. It is, of course, real wood-no composites. Maximum seat measures: 15 1/2" front to back; 15 5/8" side-to-side; 1 5/16" thick. Back measures about: 13 7/8" wide x 6 7/8" high x 9/16" thick. Backrest stem is about 19 1/2" long x 1 1/2" wide, from 7/8"1 1/2" thick. Leg spread about 17 1/4" The close up of the caster shows you: a) we haven't cleaned it; b) casters have ball bearings; c) casters are sized to run on hard surface. This is a wonderful old labeled and signed Heywood Wakefield desk chair. It appears to be constructed of a combination of maple in the legs. Seat, and arms, with the balance of the spindles and bent parts being ash. It has a rich dark golden brown finish that is all original and unrepaired and unretouched. This chair is in very good condition, still very tight and sturdy, and an absolute delight to sit down in- the most comfortable wooden chair I personally have ever sat down in. This chair has belonged to my 96-year-old father since it was inherited by him from an elderly cousin 18 years ago. We suspect that it may have been purchased new by her, as she worked at Famous Barr in St. Louis in the 1930's& 40's. 1 Antique Oak Desk& Chair Overall dimensions of this desk are 35" deep X 46" wide X 30 1/2" high. The hutch part of the desk is 17" Deep X 46" Wide X 21" High. The depth of the back filing section of this desk is 13" Deep and app. 46" wide. This desk is much different than any that I have seen. It is a desk. With hutch that sits on top and is held in place with 4 dowels, one of which is broken. The desk has 12 drawers all of which are original and work. There are no guides, they slide on the wood. The drawer locks that hold the other drawers shut/locked all work and are not broken in any manner. The locks on the drawers do work but some how I have managed to lose the keys to this desk. The hutch has 4 drawers 16"cubby holes" for storage and one pencil holder drawer on the right and only ... morethe front piece of the left pencil holder. Also on the hutch is a pencil holder that attaches tot he side but is not attached. it got knocked off when moving it out of my house, still in one piece but not attached) The locks also work on the hutch drawers but again, I have lost the keys. The back section of this desk is what makes it very different and sort of unique. It has a filing section in it. There are two doors that also have a lock without a key. The left door has a latch and the right door locks. There are several"cubby holes" with some of the original paperboard boxes/trays and there are also other section in different sizes back there. Some of the boxes have markings on them such as insurance claims. Losses etc. I had the desk refinished and cleaned the best it could be without over sanding and damaging the original look and feel of the desk in 1976. The top of the desk has not had the leather put back on it. You can see where it was damaged and mostly removed to still use the desk. Unfortunately, I can't remember the manufacturers name, but you might be able to tell by looking at the pictures. I looked it over and couldn't find any labels or markings. I love the little chair. The fully functional brass hardware and triple banister post back. Coupled with the corkscrew design for raising and lowering the chair height is such a clever and inventive design. It is also very strong and sturdy! They just don't make chairs this durable any more! You can truly feel the history when you see this set. It is a great little set. The desks roll top is fully functional and there are little cubby cubicles inside for storage. There are 2 smoothly sliding drawers with a skeleton key type lock. No key though. The desk and chair both have the normal wear and tear marks from the last almost 100 years. But they both in pretty good shape considering it was used by children. You can see minor maintenance repairs here and there, but nothing major that I can see. Just stuff like a couple new screws here and there. The six cabriole legs are carved, the legs and trim in the original ivory enamel paint. It has a matching finish chair, new upholstery. The desk measures 30" tall by 43" wide 19" deep. From bottom of center drawer to floor is 23" tall, the kneehole 16" wide from leg to opposite leg. The chair is 35" tall by 16" wide by 17" deep. Up for auction is an incredible survivor set of an antique 1800's schoolhouse desk and chair set in maple. This set is in very original condition with original finish and initials carved. The ink well is missing but that is about it. These go very well together and came from the same source although I cannot verify they originally worked together. The desk is marked"Chandler" and"The Boston" on the cast iron legs. There are no other markings. The bentwood chair is in excellent condition and marked"Haywood 3 Eclipse" There are signs that both desk and chair cast iron areas were once gloss black enamel. These would look so cool if repainted. No serious rust but the black is mostly gone. A wire wheel on a drill would make quick work of this. The desk measures 24" wide x 16" deep x 30" tall. 1 Antique Oak Desk/Chair, UnionStation, St.Louis, "Secret Compartment Desk"
1 Antique Oak Desk with"Secret Compartment" Chair Overall dimensions of this desk are 35" deep X 46" wide X 30 1/2" high. The hutch part of the desk is 17" Deep X 46" Wide X 21" High. The depth of the"Secret Compartment" back filing section of this desk is 13" Deep and app. 46" wide. This desk is much different than any that I have seen. It is a desk. With hutch that sits on top and is held in place with 4 dowels, one of which is broken. The desk has 12 drawers all of which are original and work. There are no guides, they slide on the wood. The drawer locks that hold the other drawers shut/locked all work and are not broken in any manner. The locks on the drawers do work but some how I have managed to lose the keys to this desk. The hutch has 4 drawers 16"cubby holes" for ... morestorage and one pencil holder drawer on the right and only the front piece of the left pencil holder. Also on the hutch is a pencil holder that attaches tot he side but is not attached. it got knocked off when moving it out of my house, still in one piece but not attached) The locks also work on the hutch drawers but again, I have lost the keys. The back section of this desk is what makes it very different and sort of unique. It has a filing section in it. There are two doors that also have a lock without a key. The left door has a latch and the right door locks. There are several"cubby holes" with some of the original paperboard boxes/trays and there are also other section in different sizes back there. Some of the boxes have markings on them such as insurance claims. Losses etc. I had the desk refinished and cleaned the best it could be without over sanding and damaging the original look and feel of the desk in 1976. The top of the desk has not had the leather put back on it. You can see where it was damaged and mostly removed to still use the desk. UNIQUE VINTAGE 1950's ANTIQUE REPRODUCTION WRITING DESK& CHAIR I purchased this desk and chair at a South Florida Antique Shop over 20 years ago. I was told it was probably made for a lady or teenager as a writing or study desk. I was never clear on the age until I did a web-search and came across this article. Below is an excerpt from the blog which explains a bit about the maker of this piece: Townshend of Vermont antiqueshoppefl.com/archives/ftaylor/qa71.htm) As seen in The Antique Shoppe Newspaper, April 2007. The label in the drawer reads"Townshend" with an"h" Not Townsend. That opened up a whole new area of exploration since there is a town in Vermont named"Townshend" that was founded in the 1700's. The history of Townshend. Vermont began in 1753 with a charter from King George II and is an ... moreinteresting tale but not for here. While researching Townshend, Vermont I came across a reference to Townshend Furniture Company. A little further digging turned up an address and phone number for the company and within a few minutes I was talking to Steve Lott who, along with his wife Susie, currently owns Townshend Furniture Company on RT 30 in Townshend, Vermont. Steve told me the company was founded after World War II by a veteran who had an interest in mostly maple Colonial Revival furniture which was produced by the company until the 1960's when it was purchased by Steve's family. Steve confirmed that the paper label found in the drawer of the drop front desk was indeed from his company and was used by his predecessor in the 1950's and 1960's but is no longer in use. That pretty well puts a definite date on this particular piece. So according to this article. The desk is most probably from the 1950's or 1960's. It is a well made amazing reproduction of a Colonial Revival piece. It has been loved and well cared-for for a long time. It really does make a beautiful impression. It is thin and sleek. Yet such a sturdy piece of well made vintage furniture.
