Huge Old Pine Wood Settle Bench Hall Settle Seat Primitive Vintage
Out of an estate in Brooklyn. A huge old pine settle-bench. It was obtained sometime in the ealry 70s and was stored for many years in a clean dry garage. It got a good home in an upstate cabin but I have to move it out for a piece of needed furntiure. I am no expert on Settle Benches and I know little to nothing about this type of furnitue. I tried to research it and I cannot get a handle on how old it is. It is made of pine. There is a long strip down the center of the table back. I don't konw what that is. It may have been where a seam is located. I have no idea how to touch this up or if even needs to be touched. I dont' think it is terriby old but I really have no idea when it was made. Rare Antique 8-Foot Wooden Settle Bench with original black paint and gold leaf flora stencil on back rest. Research shows that The Boston Dispensary was established in 1796 and provided for“medical relief of the poor” in Boston. Massachusetts. The Boston Dispensary was the first permanent medical facility in New England and one of the first in the U.S. Early donors included Paul Revere. And the dispensary eventually merged with Tufts Medical Center in Boston. The bench was found in the Boston Dispensary storage locker of Tufts Medical Center. A small section of the leg located in middle section is missing; please see pictures for clarification. This does not effect balance of the bench. And it is very sturdy. Found in central Ohio, it measures 96" long(8ft) 32" tall in back and the seat depth is 14 1/2" front to back) Retains its original spicy mustard, pumpkin colored grain paint with a Century of wear to give it that perfect time worn look. The bench sits level and is very sturdy. Could find no evidence of previous repairs. Great antique condition, with some expected wear throughout consistent with age and use. Can see it out in the field, pulled up to a harvest table. Or, in the keeping room of an early farmhouse. Just a fantastic Americana piece. Finish appears to be all original, upholstery old, possibly original, but I do not knowis free of any rips, tears or holes, some sun fading in areas and light background has darkened and yellowed in areas with age but sill looks great and givea this piece a wonderful warm aged appearance. Cushions appear to be atuffed qith horse hair or some other fiberoua material. Frame is solid wood and structurally sound and free of any breaks or repairs, there is a spot on the arm that appears someone named james scratched their name into it years ago, I think this just adds to the benches history and beauty, but could easily be sanded out and refinished. This wonderful antique large scale chintz pillow is all original. Probably made for a bench or settle. It is early 19th century, circa 1825-1830. The cotton chintz pillow is a large scale floral design, and retains some of its glaze. The pillow is long. Measuring 80" long x 16" wide. The backing is a linen from this same period. It is a heavier weight pillow, measuring 1 to 1 1/2" thick. It is hand sewn. The pillow is in good condition overall. The colors are strong. With little or no fading. There is some loss or tears in the brown background fabric, as shown in the pictures. As expected, early browns tended to be fugitive from the dyes and mordants used to set the dyes. Below, the back is attached to the base with solid turned arms. The seat is hinged and reveals a useful large storage area below for shoes or boots. The front central frame below the seat features carved lunettes, which again, is typical of the Tudor. To the front and sides of the base there are pretty inset oak panels flanked by a reeded frame. The back consists of four recessed floral and leaf carved panels. Flanking the panels and to the whole of the outer frame. The settle is enriched with punch work. Above these recessed back panels is a row of carved floral demi-lunes. Two shaped down swept arms are secured in place by bobbin turned spindles to the seat frame. Below the hinged seat lid. There is another row of carved demi-lunes followed by four floral carved lozenge recessed panels. Interspersed between the panels are profuse leaf carvings. There is a working lid in the centre seat.
