WINDOW BENCHES] Probably France c. 1900 Item# 1402SPP28-Q This is a finely preserved pair of Empire Curule Tabourets crafted of solid mahogany in the first years of the 20th century. The"X-form" of the stools is of purely classical inspiration. A design associated with the Roman Empire but found as early as 500 B.C. in the Egyptian empires. The market for exceptional hand crafted revivals of the French Empire was strong enough during the late 19th and early 20th century to result in a quality of craftsmanship that rivaled the originals- this pair of stools were clearly crafted with this market in mind, as each is entirely carved and crafted by hand and of the ... morehighest grade of mahogany. The deep and even grains of the mahogany surface is preserved under a wax and is embellished with a tasteful selection of gilt bronze mounts. Each chased and filed with crisp precision- the arms are capped with tiny floral rosettes, the joint of the legs opposing anthemions flanking a larger floral rosette. The legs are stretched with a boldly turned stretcher. Each foot terminating in deep and heavy Lion paws- every toe is carefully formed and the sharp nail chiseled at the tip of each. For anyone passionate about the French Empire period and furnishings of classical inspiration, this is an outstanding find indeed. Measurements: 31" wide x 18 3/4" deep x 26 1/2" high; 17" high to lowest part of each seat Condition Report: Upholstery must be changed to be enjoyed. Being quite stained and discolored; very minor dings and surface abrasions here and there. Wonderful well preserved cognac tone to mahogany.
